2017 front bumper - 2 different versions?

I'm putting a 2017 86 front bumper cover on my 2015 model year FR-S. But there are two different options: one ending in STD, the other ending in HI (which evidently stands for "High Type"). I have no idea what the difference is between these two and I've called a bunch of parts departments, none of them can tell me the difference either. Does anyone have any clue what the difference might be?? And I'm pretty sure it's not fog lights.

Thanks!

just curious and everyone to their own, but why are you putting an 86 bumper on the FRS? them shits look like the face of a child who never had braces and got socked in the mouth

SuperTom 07-01-2017 01:34 PM

Don't know the difference between the 2 but you will not be disappointed in the changeover. Unlike the guy above the bumper looks so much better in person

fx1mark 07-01-2017 01:46 PM

like the lady said who kissed a cow "everybody to their own tastes"

Wasn't that the advertising slogan Pontiac used for the Aztek?

SuperTom 07-01-2017 03:04 PM

People are going to defend whatever they got but If I wanted the old style could have saved cash used. Don't like the ugly turn signal/fog light area on the old one. Would look better as a functional brake duct.

I'm $0.02 richer, ty

crazy how much hate the 17 bumper has brought, it still looks great especially in person...not like the 13-16 86 bumper is outright gorgeous, has weird angles too. People act like the differences are so significant between the 13-16/17 86 & BRZ bumpers, they all give the car the same general front end look..sure grill shapes are different, but that is it really..

not sure what is so hideous compared to the 13-16 bumper?

The lines don't match anything else on the car, was supposedly done for aero (on a car this slow) and to add some "aggressiveness".

I just don't look at it anymore.

If I wanted a moustache, I'd buy a BRZ.

I'm guessing the "High" has headlight washer drawers and "Std" doesn't.

I think it looks even worse. It's one of those things where I say, "Oh, hey, there's an 86--GAH!"

Shinigami301 07-02-2017 01:32 PM

You know, I was one of the first here to decry the looks of the '17 front, but even I agree that in certain colors it's better in person than in photos.

Still not good, but slightly less wretched.

OK we get it people don't like it. The OP wanted an answer to his question about the difference in part # not opinions. :threadjacked:

I chose its over the big mustache of the brz which they have failed to correct on the 17's. With a drop makes the car look low and wide in the front not thin and pointy. Styling bounces back and forth between angular and curvy every 10 years or so. The run on trapezoidal grills will be over soon

I'm curious if you can swap the headlights instead and still keep the Zenki 13-16 front bumper. I mean it would be a good option instead of the overpriced Monogram Headlights.

Both style bumpers look fine to me. The pre-2017 standard model head lights and tail lights were cheesy looking though compared to the 17's.

dnieves 07-04-2017 12:06 PM

it'd be interesting to have the headlight washer assembly installed and functioning as I don't think anybody ever tried that on a USDM twin. That'd be very unique.

I have headlight washers on my '13 GT86. (EUDM "High" spec)
They're not very effective. I don't think I'd notice if they stopped working.
So my advice: Don't bother, spend time & money on something else.

Hawk77FT 07-05-2017 05:29 PM

If your car has headlights washer, then get the one with the headlights washer. With that said however, even if you get the other one, on the back of the bumper you have the template to cut it anyways, so easy enough to dremel that part out at some point.

Hope this helps.

Here you go. The swap is straight forward. I also rewired the signals to work with the integrated LED lights. As of now, my OEM zenki signals are useless.

But Im going to swap over to the kouki bumper anyways so its only temporary.

Yep, this makes sense. I believe you're right. I ended up going with the standard version because I needed to order ASAP, but I don't have headlight washers so it looks like I'm not missing anything.

As for the bumper style debate, when I first saw pictures of the '17 front bumper, I hated it. But when I saw it in person, it really changed my opinion on it. And every friend I've asked about it (after they had also seen it in person) also likes it more. So it's just one of those bumpers that really does look much better in person, especially with a bit of a drop. Ultimately it's a matter of opinion, but I can't wait to do the facelift. Personally I have barely seen any '17s on the road so around where I live it will make mine a bit unique as well.

I like the new bumper too. The 17's look awesome.

Good luck with the project, and post photos!

This is exactly how I felt about it... when I saw the first pictures on the internet, I was immediately turned off ... but when I saw it in person it looked a lot better to me.

Kiss the cod. *shrug*

Don't shoot me, but I have a 17 BRZ and want to swap out the front bumper for the 17 86 one. Will it fit or is there some modification needed to make it work?

It seems like no matter which car you're talking about, zenki owners always hate on the looks of the kouki. My previous car was an RX-8 and it seemed like everyone hated the facelift (in reality it looks great). I took my car autocrossing last week and I'm totally stock. There were two really bad ass looking FRSs there and a corner worker came up to me and told me mine looked meaner going through the course! LOL.

I will say that I think the '17 front looks a little too aggressive at stock height and can't wait to get mine lowered.
