Shift light.
 
Noob question:

I was wondering if the shift light indicator is only available for MT or is it available with the AT as well...if so how do you access it?

No idea if it works on automatic, but manual doesn't say it won't.

While stopped hit the "DISP" button until the screen says "rev. --00"
Press and hold "DISP" to go into a mode to change it
Tapping "DISP" toggles through the the 1000s digit the 100s digit and weather or not you want it to beap("b on" or "b off").
Press and hold "DISP" to change the current thing selected.

Page 196 of the BRZ manual(which you can download), section "Setting the REV indicator".

There is still a manual mode in the AT which allows you to shift via paddle shifters or the shifter itself.

You do know the auto has a user-shift mode, don't you?

Anyway, I use mine at 2300 RPMs to facilitate economy driving in D+Snow mode on my morning and afternoon commutes.

I know that, but even in an Auto once it hits Redline its going to shift for you any way....Idk call me a negative nanny I still don't see the point.

In manual mode? Not on the FR-S, it won't. It'll sit there and ping off the rev limiter all day until you shift it yourself. The only time the car will shift for you in manual mode is downshifting to avoid a stall. IIRC, I think it'll also upshift if the engine starts to overheat, but I haven't run into that situation yet. ;)

Interesting, are you seeing any appreciable gains from this? I pretty much drive in standard mode with the occasional bursts of madman, and I'm averaging almost 32MPG in mine.

As a counterpoint to that, I drive mostly in sport, and I indulge my inner hoon at every possible opportunity. Corner coming up? Ooh, let's see if we can get the VSC to kick in! I am a symphony of squealing Michelins.

To make matters worse, most of my drive is low-speed stop and go. 55 max, with stoplights a-plenty.

I'm still managing around 25mpg, and for me and this area, I'm pleased. My tC was worse.

Snow mode does seem to have a couple of effects beyond just starting in 2nd (which provides ample torque by the way): The shift programming is more conservative than standard mode, shifting seems a little softer and throttle seems a little softer. I believe it makes a bit of a difference.

Is that 32 MPG calculated using your fillup gallons and mileage or based on the AVG MPG on the dash? Best I've seen on my commute (30 mph roads mostly, a dozen stop signs) is 37.2 MPG on the dash computer by resetting it right after start. I'm still waiting for my next fillup to get a more accurate actual MPG for the tankfull.

It's more of a game to me than anything. Just an interesting contest I have with myself rather than an attempt to conserve earth's resources for future generations or save enough money to retire on. :bonk:

I do approximately 70% HWY/30% City. Getting 32 MPG using dash calculator and 30.5 MPG doing to actual calculation.

Cruise control in 6th is annoying if you have it pegged at around 75 MPH. It will shift down on even a remote incline. I find myself putting it in manual mode and setting cruise control so it sticks in 6th.

Manually calculated over 3000+ miles, mostly commuting (although not quite city miles obviously). Details are here at the bottom of my Journal's OP.

Interesting results I may have to play with it on my next fill-up just to see what happens.

The User Shift mode acts exactly like a Manual except the clutch is automated. It won't shift down or up if you don't make it. On the FR-S it's a nice middle-of-the-road option between practicality and performance since it blips the throttle after down shifting. Though race cars, most high end sports cars, and I BELIEVE the Volkswagon GTI have a double clutch automatic w/ paddle shifters which actually shift better and faster than any human ever could.

It lugs up to speed even with brake tq. I didnt think it was that bad until me and my friend decided to have some fun at the motorsports park.

His car pulls from a stop and gets at least a half to full car length ahead of me before we both plateau and he still pulls slowly on me from there.

If the auto did not lug he still would have beat me which I dont really care about but it would have been a lot closer.

Best time he had (100 degree weather/high humidity) was a 15.5 (with a huge sub box in the back) and mine was a 16.3 (with everything in the trunk removed) Everything in was like a 16.5-7.

I mean the launch of the auto is going to hurt me and anyone else planning to auto x or road course race.

I have no issue doing it. Only thing that took some figuring out (and this has been documented on here, which is where I first saw it) is you have to NOT press the brake all the way down. About 80% to 90% does it, although the car will start to slip.

Press it all the way in, and the car won't rev past around 2K or so. You can most likely thank the lawyers for that.

IIRC, it's the result of that whole bogus "unintended acceleration" fiasco that turned out to be "morons pressing the wrong pedal". So, yep, we can thank lawyers. And morons, as usual.

Oh, you'd be correct with the vast majority of manual-mode auto transmissions - most of them do upshift automatically at redline. The FR-S is rather atypical in that regard.

Toyota/Subaru put a lot of thought into the AT on this car, and it shows.

I set mine to 3600 with the beep on. This gives you enough notice (usually) to shift and avoid going over 4k. Setting the 'Fun Zone Light' to 7k after break-in was extremely satisfying.

Interesting to see where you guys are setting the shift light at. Mine is currently set on 5900. Not because I drive it THAT hard, but because I use it as a safety measure to make sure I don't rev the engine too hard. Of course "too hard" is totally subjective but the light and beep warning sure comes in handy when you are passing someone and your focus is totally on the road.
