FRS steering wheel vibration.

Hi,everyone. I realize my car's steering wheel has a lots of vibration when it idle. I know it might be engine mount problem, but the vibration only comes out when the car stop moving. Does anyone have the same issue as mine ? My car is first Gen ,2013 model.

dostoyevsky 04-21-2017 02:25 AM

How many km?

I have around 50K miles on the car.

dostoyevsky 04-21-2017 02:57 AM

Honestly, as you suggested yourself, check the motor mounts, they arent difficult to inspect.

What model year is your car ........:confused0068:

Does the engine itself vibrate ...... or just your steering wheel .. ??

Come back.

Check the plastic around the mount, Is it cracked and broken? And inside the mount aswell

Tcoat 04-21-2017 08:18 AM

Is it completely stock?

humfrz 04-21-2017 11:15 AM

How is the engine running, as far as putting out power .. ??

Any codes thrown .... ??

Back-in-the-day ....... I would have suspected a fouled spark plug.

I would take it in to a dealer ASAP!

I always thought they didn't start production until 2012.
Does your VIN have a B as the 10th character? as in JF1ZxxxxxBxxxxxxx
If it's a C it means it was assembled in 2012.

strat61caster 04-21-2017 01:09 PM

Could be fine, OP is it your first sports car?

8RZ 04-21-2017 01:18 PM

You got the "steering wheel with massage" feature? Lucky!

It's running good, engine has some vibration but nothing major. It doesn't feel like power lost anything like that

Not the first sports car , my first car is 91 MR2 and then a Honda Del sol. I also drove couple of my friend's BRZ and Frs. They don't have that steering wheel vibrations .

I have header and tuned , dealer won't take care of my car anymore unless I take it off and reflash back to stock tune.

Has it always done it or has it changed somehow? Could be a result of the header and tune.

Well, @Tcoat ferrets out the possible cause.

I'd suggest you check all of the exhaust parts to see if any are rubbing (or even close) to any part, that is even remotely connected to any part of the steering mechanism.

If that don't work, as Tcoat suggested, check the tune to see if you can smooth out the engine.

I just drive my car for 15 minutes, I pay extra attention to the vibration from the steering wheel , actually I can feel my whole car is shacking. Now, I think the whole vibration is come from the engine, I will change my tune back to stock and get a feel from it again. I hope it's just the tune , then I can get a better tune to fix that. I also realize The car shacks a lot when I turn on the AC since the RPM will drop down and come back up to 700. Its more obvious in the morning when its hot around 90F outside,it has less vibration at night when it's cold.

Does it shake when driving, or only when idling and/or standing still as you said in your first post?

Only shake when idling.

Ok. If you stand in front of it with the hood open, do you see the engine shake?

Yes , it does shake when the AC kicks in . I think that's normal for AC on.

May be as simple as bringing the idle up a couple of hundred RPM at idle. If it is shaking more when the AC comes on it is struggling to keep running.

Mine twitches a little sometimes when the AC kicks in at idle. The idle RPM fluctuates a little, too.
I seem to remember old threads about it; consensus was that it's normal, I think?

However, my old Legacy (with a similar Subaru flat 4 in it) got it worse.
It flashed dash lights and even stalled when the AC kicked in at idle.
The dealer fixed it by tickling the throttle body and resetting the ECU.

Mine as well but he said "comes back up to 700" so just how far is it dropping? It will be interesting to see if the problem goes away when he flashes back to stock

nikitopo 04-22-2017 01:23 AM

Flash back to stock and re-check.

snk828 05-11-2017 02:38 PM

update: The car got flashed back to stock tune and drive couple miles, the vibration still there. I did take the car into the shop check for engine mounts, but the mounts still holding fine. I also did some research in the forum, ppl are having uneven engine vibration from the early model year, but didn't mention anything about steering vibration. Does anyone owns a 2013 model year have the same steering vibration? I hope this is normal for our car.

I have had one 2012 and one 2013 GT86 and never had any vibration.
Just to confirm, does this happen when standing still? (Excluding tires and wheels)
What is your idle RPM when this happens?
Does it stop vibrating of you rev up in neutral?

It's only happening at idle, idle RPM about 700, it does go away when I rev up in neutral. now I'm thinking the header contacts the steering rack or something. :iono:

I've driven many different flavors of the 86. Other than the occasional little *ahem* when the AC compressor engages, this thing idles pretty smoothly.

I drove a 2015 BRZ and a 2014 frs, both steering wheels don't have any vibration that's why I start to worry about mine.

BRZnut 05-11-2017 09:13 PM

I have a 2013 and no steering vibration (bought it fall 2012 , so one of the early ones)

drift8686 07-07-2019 08:20 PM

same model same problem.
please update the reason
