Are headers really worth it?

This question has probably been asked many times but I'd like your opinion on it.

I have an mxp exhaust, injen intake and an oft stage 1 91 oct tune (we don't have 93 where I live). I'm about to buy an OFH off someone but I'm scared about the loudness.

What I'm mostly concerned about is, does it really make a difference in the torque dip?/ does it make a noticeable difference with the stage 2 uel tune combined? I've heard that the difference is so small you won't even notice anything. Is this true? I'd love to hear your opinions.

Also, would an EL hks be just as loud?

Big difference.

Summerwolf 04-18-2017 05:26 PM

.... yes. Ffs read a header thread.

Shady195 04-18-2017 05:32 PM

by itself its negligible, with a tune its 100% worth it. Even a shitty ebay header.

I know there is a ton of threads but some people say the difference between stage 1 oft and stage 2 uel with the header isn't that big

If you only do one mod, make it a header.

If you decide to do two things, find a good tuner to tune the header.

MurderousPandas 04-18-2017 06:12 PM

Headers make a big improvement, but a tune is better imo. Combined works wonders. And stage 2 is catless, stage 1 is catted.

Maybe not, but you have 94 octane.

Yes, a header and a tune makes a noticeable difference on this car. Add an E85 tune to the mix and it's even better. Nothing short of forced induction totally eliminates the torque dip, but an UEL header with E85 tune comes pretty close.

They are more spectacular than just kicking the ball, really rewarding when you score, but the nannies now say they cause long term brain damage.

Yes, do you have something against Ethanol?

dattran86 04-18-2017 06:54 PM

In Canada here and I'm tuned in 93 Octane Stage 2

I gas at Esso

Petro Canada 94 octane is making soo much cricket sound under the hood. The high pressure fuel pompe do not like it.

I use Shell V-power too and no such noise as Petro-Canada 94.

DarkSunrise 04-18-2017 07:01 PM

Also keep in mind not every header will give you the same results. Depending on design, they will add or subtract power in different parts of the powerband. If you're primarily concerned about the torque dip, make sure you look over people's dyno results and pick a header that fits what you're looking for. But to answer your question, yes the right header does make a noticeable difference.

FYI, that's not always the case. In many areas ethanol is added during winter months.

I will put up with that for the added knock resistance. It's easy to shut the crickets up, as well.

Personal preference.

I haven't heard crickets since I started filling at shell

And they have the auto full thing so I don't have to hold the pump https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/201...6caebe4301.jpg

That's good to know actually thank you. I'll do more research on that later.

A header is the only piece of 'naturally aspirated hardware' that actually does make a difference on this car.

AREN 04-18-2017 09:20 PM

The UEL Boxer rumble makes it worth it for me. RUMBLE!

Yes, with a tune IT'S HUGE. IMHO gutting and tuning is the single best HP/$ thing you can do. You can get an aftermarket header which can make slightly more power, but many have issues down the road with cracking at the welds and the extra heat can damage coil packs unless you wrap or coat. Gutting the OEM header can retain the OEM heat shielding so there is no extra heat (maybe there's even less heat without the cat?)

either way, if you get a catless header or gut, GET A TUNE to go with it. As for noise- there was a big increase in noise when I gutted the secondary cat. The increase in noise when I gutted the cat in the header was minimal. But yes, it will be noisier either way. But you also get extra burbling, popping and over run sounds too which are nice. and extra stink, which is not nice.

Ya that 2 or 3 minutes of holding a pump is a real bitch!

Lantana frs 04-18-2017 10:56 PM

Flattening the torque curve makes a tremendous difference on the street. The gains above 5 grand are a bonus imo.

can't you use chevron 94?

PNW-BRZ 04-19-2017 12:53 AM

I was running Stage 1 with an OFT Tune. Switched over to a Gruppe S UEL header and ECU Tech Tune (on Dyno) and it was a HUGE difference (currently 190 HP at the wheels on 92 Octane) and the Torque dip is drastically reduced. The rest of the exhaust remained stock. It's really pretty quiet (unless I'm just starting up or I jump on it) Wished I would have done it sooner it's really night and day difference.

allowe 04-19-2017 05:24 PM

Anyone know the differences between ofh and ofh2? I just got the ofh header.

Sadly they are no such Chevron close by. Anyway I thinks their not much WHP difference between oft stage 2 91 and 93.

timmydatooth 04-19-2017 07:08 PM

getting my tomei UEL header installed tuesday! super excited! question do I have to do a tune right after I install them? or am I safe to drive around on the stage 1 tune for a little while?

Does anyone know what to tune to make cold start less loud ?

All non-stock, catless headers will increase how loud the car is. With a stock exhaust it is still quiet at idle and cruise but noticeably louder when accelerating or on cold start. I don't know where your catback sits on the loudness scale but the Invidia Q300, Perrin 2.5" resonated and the new CSG MXP catback are supposedly not too loud with a header installed.

There is a whole thread on it. Nothing significant changed I believe.

You won't damage anything by not running the stage 2 UEL tune but the car will be MUCH nicer to drive with the stage 2 tune.

I don't believe there is an OTS tune. You will most likely have to read the thread and modify your existing tune.

If it's catted you're good to go (cat in header that is- the secondary cat does not trip any CEL if removed). If it's catless however, Stage 1 tunes do not disable the P0420 CEL and your car will trip the CEL and go into low power mode and disable the cruise control regularly.

Stage 2 tune does disable the P0420

allowe 04-20-2017 12:18 PM

I know this is a bit off topic but while I'm trying to install my header I saw this https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/201...a2c19d8bfc.jpg

There are no signs of dripping on the skid plate..

Upgraded headers with a tune is better money spent then the intake you put in. UEL will give you that "subi" sound, EL will give you a bit more peak HP.

Most NA guys will go I(filter replacement)/H/E + tune, slap some E85 and your around 50+ hp. without stickers!

I had to drill out the bolts between the over pipe and mid pipe, then realized I was going to replace all of it.

I would grab some extra bolts, I needed 4 I think.
