Subaru WRX Fan just posted a review video of a Series.Yellow and the owner did some really nice (and tasteful) touches in the Interior and I want to know the details! Are you on here?

tacos 04-05-2017 03:32 PM

all the silver plastic bits painted gloss black to match the stereo surround look realllllly nice... the silver in the interior looks cheap to me, wish someone made "piano gloss black" replacement bits, as i dont really trust paint to last

Right!? The steering wheel and shifter trim too, and I really like the yellow air vent surrounds, the color looked like a very good match

johan 04-05-2017 04:29 PM

I did some of the same black interior accents to my '17 last year. I used gloss black 3m vinyl, it's a lot easier than painting. I wouldn't be surprised if this owner did vinyl as well and the reviewer just assumed it was paint.

Center stack
Door handles
Air vent surrounds (with JDM Auris vents)

I still want to do the steering wheel parts black, just haven't gotten around to it.

I actually wrapped the shifter ring, but on an automatic it looked weird, so I took it off.

+1

I have all the silver bits of my interior wrapped in matte white or matte black.

EthirtyPDX 04-05-2017 05:38 PM

I plan to replace all the chrome/silver interior bits on my series yellow with the toyota black ones.. Fairly cheap considering new OEM parts.. Looks better than silver but personally i feel the interior already has enough yellow.. Though the yellow ring around inside of shift boot does look neat.

What i really want is the JDM armrest with yellow stitch.. Dunno if that will happen unless i learn to sew..

Well that's a thought from ft86speedfactory:

TOYOTA JDM OEM BLACK AC VENTS (OUTER) - 2013+ FR-S / BRZ / 86 $21.95
TOYOTA OEM BLACK SHIFTER TRIM - 2013+ FR-S / BRZ $18.65
TOYOTA OEM BLACK DOOR HANDLES - 2013+ FR-S / BRZ $53.85

Under $100, they are black but not the glossy piano black like the head unit trim
Whats the name of the silver trim pieces on either side of the climate controls?

Did you do it or did you have it done? I'm pretty crafty I'm just not sure I'm THAT crafty

I am a 100% DIY person. If I can't DIY, it likely won't get done - with the exception of tire mount/balance and alignments. I hate letting other people touch my car.

johan 04-05-2017 06:23 PM

Just get this, it's cheap, it matches the OEM stereo trim perfectly, and it's enough vinyl to do all these parts twice. So if you screw up, you try again. My first tries at vinyl were on this car.

Sweet! I just ordered it. I think I'll give it a shot. Now I'm gonna see if I find a color match for that Yellow. Did you wrap the bezel around the vents too? I might have to bug you once I get the wraps in for some tips

I highly recommend picking up a cheap heat gun from harbor freight or amazon if you don't already have one. It helps a lot to gently warm the vinyl when trying to stretch it over a corner or complex surface.

^ I used a hair dryer for the vinyl in my car lol, works fine.

The vent trim is definitely the most annoying part though, I always end up having at least one bubble trapped on the beveled outer edge.

BboyRuda 04-06-2017 02:17 AM

I want my interior like that. Shoulda been like that stock tbh

I'm not gonna lie, I ordered the Toyota 86 silver stitched armrest with the plan and intention of yellow sharpieing the silver stitches. But after I got my car the lack of a armrest didn't bother me and I use those cup holders often so I sold it.

I have the JDM armrest and it's awesome. You can still use the cupholders just fine. It has a catch in it when it's in the fully up position so it won't fall over. I've had hot beverages in it quite often and it's never gotten in the way. Then on long drives having it down to rest my arm on is a win.

YES! OMG I hate it. I did mine, it looked great, then a couple days later bubbles started appearing. Right now it's so bad I'm ready to take it off and paint it. The vinyl just won't stay adhered to that concave surface. The rest of my vinyl on the doors and center stack is holding up great though.

The more I think about it, I think I'm gonna try to wrap the door handles and cc trim, and try to find a matte or semi gloss rattle can that comes close to that yellow. I just don't know how the owner in the video went about doing the shifter trim gloss black with the yellow ring...?

PandaSPUR 04-06-2017 01:21 PM

Yea I'm planning to just buy the black vent trim to replace mine.

I have enough white going on around the HVAC and shifter trim, just gonna take the easy way out for those vent rings.

I did the shifter ring gloss with vinyl. It wasn't easy, lots of patience. The yellow ring is probably some additional piece that they added. Either a piece of piping or ... idk.

DrButtDrugs 04-06-2017 03:21 PM

Noting that vinyl isn't a very easy application, has anyone tried Plastidip on interior trim pieces?

Just do what I did for my armrest but with yellow stitching.

http://i264.photobucket.com/albums/i...74A646E9F1.jpg

I just bought an OEM replica armrest for $150 new, removed the fake leather on top, bought a redline goods armrest cover (you can order this in yellow stitching with leather or alcantara in any color. My alcantara armrest cover was $75 shipped and it comes with probably triple the padding of the crappy oem armrest. I paid $65 to have a local upholstery shop install it.

$290 out the door for an armrest but at the end of the day this is my favorite mod!

Are those the stock air vents? They seem much nicer then what I have seen in other models.

looks so nice but is a pretty involved process...

~el~jefe~ 04-07-2017 04:02 PM

subarwrxfan is a great guy and I like his reviews.

The interior looked factory. Really good artistic eye the owner has. I am inspired to do that when I get mine. I normally never mod anything. These touches are classy.

vinyl wrapped? Sounds good. Nice thing about that is one can tear it off and re apply if it gets damaged.

funwheeldrive 04-07-2017 04:07 PM

Subaruwrxfan is annoying and constantly begs for money to buy new cars.

What's up guys. I stumbled across this thread while looking for a yellow stitch arm rest. Lol. All of my interior pieces were done custom but my painter. I work at a collision center here in Pittsburgh. Hit me up on instagram (@TheCoryKight) and I'll send you some photos on there. They're too large to attach here. Thanks for your interest!

So they where painted! I absolutely love the job on the shifter trim. I'll be the first to ask... Is your painter willing/able to take on that work again? The color matching was on point.

You could, without a single doubt, find somebody more local that can paint trim just as well.

Yeah. We use PPG Enviroborne Water Borne paints. We used the color code in the passanger door sill to match the color and he also has a vinyl cutter to make the letters. All pinstripes were had done.
As far as us doing it again, we certainly would! Again, hit me up on instagram. Lol. However I do agree with the guy that suggested just having it done at a local shop. Most normal collision centers (if actually helpful and not solely focused on money) will gladly help you out, but be careful. Some painters aren't as good as mine. ;) I appreciate all the love for it!
