If the BRZ/FR-S didn't exist, what would you have bought?

If the twins didn't exist and you had to buy a car within the next six months, what do you think you would have purchased instead?

It's often pointed out that there just aren't any other affordable, nimble RWD cars out there. There are powerful cars, good cars, fun cars... but is there anything else that remotely emphasizes handling and that "one with the driver" zen-like feeling as the twins do (even if it's not RWD)?

Probably the MKVII GTI

Re~Mix 07-15-2012 10:43 PM

Genesis Coupe, the more I see them, the more they grow on me.

Achpoques 07-15-2012 10:55 PM

Kept my Scion tC until I had a bigger downpayment for a GC 3.8 or STi

Superhatch 07-15-2012 11:04 PM

I'd still be driving my one owner, mint 91 Si.

This is seriously the only car that's excited me enough to purchase something new. The last new car I bought was in '05 and it was a MCS with all 4 packages and an LSD. It was great for a couple of years and I sold it before maintenance costs were going to start setting in.

Mr. Mcoupe 07-15-2012 11:06 PM

Mint condition 1993-95 MR2 Turbo

Mo707 07-15-2012 11:31 PM

Ricepuddin 07-15-2012 11:40 PM

I'd have kept my 2011 WRX

I would have paid off my turbo tc and still would own

Snoopyalien24 07-15-2012 11:54 PM

A GC/Mustang/Evo X?

A college kid can dream right?

Lytheum 07-16-2012 12:44 AM

would probably have fixed everything that was wrong with my speed 3 and kept it.

blu_ 07-16-2012 12:50 AM

Probably looked for a nice E30 for a weekend car. Or maybe an old 911... but that could be a slippery slope to the poor house.

#87 07-16-2012 12:54 AM

Probably nothing, maybe cave into a Mustang :(

Glad this car came out :)

CoRi J 07-16-2012 01:13 AM

BMW 135i or SRT8 Challenger

Mitch 07-16-2012 03:35 AM

Boss 302, early NSX, and Z3 M Coupe were all on the list.

lordtakuban 07-16-2012 07:06 AM

STi most likely. But, I'm glad the FR-S exists since it looks sexier (and is about $10K cheaper).

MVJ1975 07-16-2012 08:44 AM

I would have stayed in my tC until I could afford (and be willing to put up with) a Lotus Elise.

RaceR 07-16-2012 08:52 AM

I would keep my Cooper S for longer, and probably considered a 1 series when replacing it..

mclevin 07-16-2012 09:16 AM

Renault clio rs 200 or s2000

S2kphile 07-16-2012 09:20 AM

M&M_Hwy9 07-16-2012 10:23 AM

This one is easy a Toyota GT86!

b_massey02 07-16-2012 10:43 AM

A 350Z, 370Z, S2000, Solstice GXP, or maybe on the practical side a Mazdaspeed 3 or waited for Focus ST. Glad this one came out tho cause all of those had something I wasn't 100% on.

Dadhawk 07-16-2012 11:18 AM

There was nothing in the same "class" as the 86 that interested me, so next on my list was the Camaro SS2 or ZL1.

My list just got weirder from there....

f0rge 07-16-2012 01:41 PM

i'd just keep my M3.

Godzpeed 07-16-2012 02:01 PM

F30 328i

genometuning 07-16-2012 02:14 PM

hm.. a GTR? :D

Miniata 07-16-2012 02:28 PM

Maybe nothing, I've been happy with my Mustang GT, Mini Cooper, NA Miata, and Forester XT the last few years. Probably a 2005-06 NC Miata, or another NA Miata with low miles to keep mostly stock though, as my current NA Miata is reaching new heights of NVH as I modify it for autocrossing.

Sigh-on-Rice 07-17-2012 07:03 PM

Prius C 4 with 16" rim option. :confused0068:

Jlturner 07-17-2012 09:43 PM

Hyundai genesis or BMW 135i

Pscylo 07-17-2012 09:48 PM

My 71 Superbeetle.

Mr. Mcoupe 07-17-2012 09:53 PM

I was considering an FR-S but purchased a 1992 MR2 NA from someone that promptly purchased an FR-S which made me jealous and want an FR-S but I have no room now b/c I purchased an MR2.

Jesse 07-17-2012 09:53 PM

new STI would have been in my garage... would like to have awd for the winter in new england, but so glad i got the FRS

hav0c 07-18-2012 12:55 AM

Genesis Coupe, probably.

Liquidsnake 07-18-2012 01:04 AM

I would have bought another 370z.

calis5nest 07-18-2012 01:09 AM

i was going to get a 2011 camero

Bonburner 07-18-2012 01:15 AM

gen C 2.0t

rice_classic 07-18-2012 02:02 AM

Nothing, there just aren't any cars out there in the 20-30k range that are exciting enough to justify buying a new car (and the depreciation that joins it).

I would have just put another $2-3k in my Prelude to try and go for 300k miles.

However, if it did explode one day I would probably replace it with a Civic Si, Mazda 3 or something like that. I need 30+ mpg.

Skyhound 07-18-2012 02:05 AM

Either a Supra or an MR2. I'm a Toyota fan boy. xD

Hix 07-18-2012 09:28 AM

Gen Coupe or maybe a 135i
