Opinions on new alignment/help with turning issue
1 Attachment(s)
Hello. I jsut got a new alignment on my 2013 Scion Fr-S. I have Brand new rear tires and soon to be new front tires. My tires are Michelin PILOT SPORT AS3+ B9CR02RX-0817 -- 225/40ZR18, and my rims are 18inch enkei rims. I was having problems before when it came to certain left hand turns at around 40 degree apprx 60mph. I was hoping this alignment would fix it but it did not. WHenever I would make a turn at those measurements my traction control comes on and almost causes me to wreck bc it locks up my car. So since I am out of ideas I was hoping someone could tell me if this is normal for this car to do that driving on an every road, and i am just expecting too much. Below is my alignment specs. Thanks guys lmk what u think of the alignment specs

Are you slipping when turning that fast? How about turning off traction control

Most likely driver skill not high enough or speed too high. Try smoother inputs or slowing down.
It could also be that brand new tires need to be broken in. |

In the middle of the turn is where the most g's are likely to happen. If you know how to properly handle a car, why do you even have traction control on? :iono: Try sport mode or turning traction control off. Do the same turn multiple of times with it on and off. If you "know how to properly handle a car" and do it multiple times, I don't see why it would be unsafe. What suspension are you on? This car is known to hit bump stops deep into a turn which could unsettle it. Springs lower than 1inch or have soft rates have this problem. Do you turn traction control off at VIR? |
"40 degrees at 60mph"? This is on a track right?
Of course the traction control kicks in since you are starting to drift at that angle and speed. Reduce the angle or reduce the speed. |
Have you ever changed your diff fluid? Torsen may be misbehaving.

The car with its OEM suspension and wheels should not be "scary" when the nannies help out ..... yep, kind of a "whoa - what was that" ..... but not scary, when driven on average roads. Like eluded to above, I would recommend that you either engage the nannies and learn how to work with them ....... OR, turn them off and learn how to drive the car all by yourself........;) humfrz |
Where would you make a 40 degree turn at 60mph on public roads? A highway ramp?

Just turn them off (if in a safe place) and drift away. Keep in mind that a bit of gravel or a dip in the road surface could mean you may be here asking "Is this totaled? |

Are you saying the turn is a 60 degree curve (flat) OR a 60 degree (banked) curve ..... ?? humfrz |

You elude the police. Allude means to suggest. |

40 degrees is pretty cold to be expecting that kind of traction from a summer compound.

......and THEN @Ultramaroon pipes up with the temperature thing ..... and @Tcoat makes fun of him ...... and @strat61caster just sits there ...... waiting for ME to make another mistake. OK, so much for me trying to back down on ma meds ...... :confused0068: humfrz |

Yeah! What he said. Duh.
Besides, isn't it Strat's turn? Nobody likes a pedant. |
You have no camber and take it to the track? I would imagine you understeer like mad and the outside edge takes a crazy beating.
Also, new tires take a bit to burn the grease off. Plus, the car doesnt like the different aged tires front and rear. I ran tires like that for a while and had terrible time with the TC til I replaced all 4 then it went away. Not sure if its due to varying size or the levels of grip I'm also gonna go with there is likely an input somewhere (helping) cause this. |

I also doubt that the track experience is real, if it was, I'm sure he'd have a far better idea of what's going on mid-turn. Doubly hard to believe he tracks given that alignment, didn't realize understeery alignments were so good for track days. |
Ok, OP. Mixed in with our usual ribbing are some valuable observations. Let us know which parts make sense and which, if any, leave you scratching your head.

Maybe the OP went and turned off all the nannies and took that 40 degree (C or F ...??) at 60 mph and is now doing laundry ..... :iono:

1. What car have you driven that does what the frs doesn't do? 2. When the VSC kicks in, which end is letting go? 3. What's the outside temperature when you are driving 4. What's your tire pressure. If they're not even, tweak them and try again. |

I changed mine at about 25,000 km. Before changing, the LSD did not engage smoothly at all, it was like an on-off switch. Afterwards it was much more progressive, with a lot less tire squeal. I'm up to around 45,000 km on the car now, and the LSD still works great, so I think the issue was more down to diff gears wearing in than short fluid life. |

My dealership actually told me to flush my brake fluid when my car only has 19000 miles...There is no way to refuse a simple job where they can make big money....you know...dealership.. |
