What do you use for tranny and diff

What oil should I use for my AT to change the transmission fluid and differential fluid?
Also I have FI

You'll get lots of differing opinions, and probably a few "do a search" comments. If it were my car, I would go with Redline D6 trans fluid for the auto, and Redline 75W85 or 75W90 GL5 gear oil for the differential.

I used Ford XT M5 QS Synthetic Transmission Fluid for the transmission and Amsoil Severe Gear 75w110 for the differential.

The Ford Synthetic transmission fluid is GL4 and the Miata guys rave about it, I had some left over from the Miata days. Much better shifting than OE.

Do a search

What is the difference between the 75W85 and the 75W90?

The 75W85 is the recommended fluid, with 75W90 as an acceptable alternative (by the manual). 75W85 is a bit thinner than 75W90. Either one will be fine. You're in Texas, so I would probably go with the 90. If you plan on tracking the car in the heat, it probably wouldn't hurt to step up to the 75W110 as @wrh3 has done.

Just recently installed the oil you recommended me and it is awesome! I don't feel the clunky shifting from 2nd to 3rd gear pull anymore. That OEM shit sucked!

Anyone have any experience with valvoline maxlife atf in these? I'm looking at it for cost reasons, the car doesn't and won't see the track, and from what I can tell it's a better option than the toyota ws. The motul multi-af is in my price range as well, but for the price difference i can get an extra drain and fill out of the valvoline. Thoughts?

Motul gear 300 is GL4/5.

U can buy 4 bottle and replace both transmission and diff.

ristar 05-16-2017 12:30 PM

Not in an automatic I can't. Well I guess I could, but that'd probably go poorly.

A true SA would have said:

"Personally I do not use any tranny, but what you do behind closed doors is your own business!"

Thanks for the disturbing mental image of getting "tranny fluid" all over the place...

Just an FYI the first number followed buy the W is the base weight of the oil. The second number refers to the viscosity enhancers effect. Unfortunately each manufacturer has leeway on the temperatures the enhancers open up and the lubricity they can provide. To further complicate things, the additives each manufactures uses changes the behavior of the oils. Hence the described differences in performances.

usually not smart to base tranny oil for cost reasons in japanese cars.

especially when you only change the stuff so rarely.

get the motul.

I decided on Amsoil 75w90 GL4 in trans and Mobil1 75w90 LS in diff
