Popping noises

My 2013 BRZ AT, has about 56k miles on it. And now I am hearing loud popping near front suspension when turning slow and under center console when taking off hard. Any ideas...?

Mr.ac 03-12-2017 08:06 PM

You sure it's the front?
Sounds to me like you are hearing the rear axle nut. It's common when turning at low speeds and taking off.

You can try re torquing it, or buy a new nut.

By the way, any suspension upgrades or what nots?

Stock? No incidents?

Welcome to the forum, BatmanBRZ ........

In addition to the above questions:

* does the front end pop when turning both directions .. ??

* does it pop if the car isn't moving, when you turn the wheel .. ??

* have you hit anything hard (like a curb) lately ..??

* any recent tire rotation, alignment .. ??

I suspect the sound under the console is unrelated, but not sure.

Come back.

Only mods are wheels and tires, Borla cat back,

Popping under front happens when driving slow, turning both directions, and hitting potholes
Yes the noise under center is unrelated, I can feel it in the E-brake handle during take off and hard acceleration. No accidents since I bought it.. so none in last 16k...

hmmmm......were the tires you put on the car unusually large .. ??

Any spacers used on the new wheels .. ??

Lug nuts all tight .. ??

You may consider jacking up the front and moving the front wheels to see if you can detect any movement .. ?? (loose steering links; bad wheel bearing)

Maybe it's time to take it to an alignment/front end shop for a look see .. ??

As far as the noise under the center, you may wish to make sure the transmission mounts are all tight.

Please keep us posted.

I have the exact same issue at low speeds, mostly when turning into a driveway at a 45 degree angle. I noticed we also have the same exhaust now I'm wondering if that is the cause.

BatmanBRZ 03-14-2017 03:37 AM

Taking it to a local Tuner shop on Friday for a look.. I'll post an update when I find cause

BatmanBRZ 03-14-2017 03:39 AM

Offset 18in wheels, no spacers..

Do our cars have front sway bars?

BBDGriptonia 04-07-2017 11:19 AM

My car has recently developed this same popping within last few months, definitely on the front drivers side. Only at low speeds and more so when reversing with large turn angle (driveway).

Just had dealership servicing and popping went away, briefly,. Now it's louder. Dealer said they couldn't find issue. I have to go in and take a spin with service tech next week

Bone stock car. Steering and suspension feels great when at speed.

venturaII 04-07-2017 12:11 PM

I had the same problem when I first bought my slightly used 2013 (10K miles); dealer ended up replacing the front strut bearings under warranty.

MileMonger 04-07-2017 06:33 PM

Mine had a pretty loud one coming from the front, driver's side wheel area, just three days ago. I was turning left very slowly, but also at a very tight angle. It was so loud I heard it inside with both windows up and the A/C fan running just below 50%. Thought either something penetrated the tire or I crushed something not-so-small, but found nothing afterward.

I'll be changing my tires in a couple of months, so I'll ask them to take a look. Please keep us posted.

I'm also getting the same thing. If we had front axles i would say it was the axle nuts... I had one in the rear go and this sound is different. At first I thought it was something with the brakes.. but its not. Not sure whats going on yet.

Any fix to this?? I have the same issue. Suspension feels fine a speed. Just pops in my driveway.

maicolp 04-16-2019 06:50 AM

same here... sounds like cluncks and cracks when going slow on paved roads and over bumps. i can even feel the vivration thru my feet

steve99 04-16-2019 07:15 AM

Likely rear deck crwaking noise , their is TSB out on that

ermax 04-16-2019 07:24 AM

The EPS is also known to clunk and rattle at slow speeds over small bumps like road reflectors. There is a rubber bushing that couples the motor to the worm gear that falls apart. This part isn’t sold separately for our car but Toyota sells it for several of their other cars. It’s $4 and easy to install. I wrote a DIY on installing the part. When I get to a computer I will dig up the link and update this post.

Hi guys - does my video below sound similar to your issue?

Did you find out what it was in the end?

Bump as it sounds like I'm having the same noises. Mostly from the rear of the car/underneath the centre console.

will86 06-12-2019 12:35 PM

Mines defo from the front, strange

Any updates on this? I'm also having similar noises but unable to find out the source. Front passenger side for me.

will86 07-09-2019 02:48 AM

Mine was fixed by greasing the front anti roll bar

Honestly, I think the source of my rattle is my exhaust moving around. I switched to an extended hanger on one side of the muffler to level out the tips in the rear, and my rattle/creak under the centre and rear of the car has gotten a bit worse.

Not sure how to keep the exhaust from moving around, I’ve only had this issue since a few months after switching to a JDL 4-2-1 EL header.

I'm getting the same noise on the driver side, stock struts on RCE yellow springs. Started a couple months ago with a single pop when backing up and turning out of my driveway. It is now several quick pops when in reverse and then a couple again when moving forward, all with the wheel cranked pretty hard. I checked sway bar end links on both sides, went so far as to remove one endlink and drive around that way. No change. I replaced the driver side strut top hat today. No change.

This is the first time I've seen someone suggest the sway bar itself needs to be lubed - I can't rule that out since I never disconnected both end links, the bar still would have been moving around. Going to try that next.

Simulating turning by putting a low profile jack under the tire doesn't result in the clicking. I think it requires suspension movement with different loads on each side along with steering turns.

I'll update after lubing up the sway bar mounts.

Hey mate,
Sorry to revive
Did you manage to fix it?

toast 09-14-2022 09:08 AM

I wound up pulling the sway bar mounts off and relubing to fix it. Permanent fix was adding a zerk fitting to each mount and squirting lube in each spring.
