Is it safe to run with a stripped interior?

I wanted to strip the rear backseats and speaker panels for the summer because its a racecar (this part is sarcasm). I don't want to remove the curtain airbags though, and I'm worried that the airbag might go off if someone accidentally punches a sensor.

Are airbag sensors smart enough to not go off in that case? And is it the yellow plug near the speakers?

Tcoat 03-05-2017 02:22 PM

You will be fine. It will be ugly as hell but nothing will get set off.

Zhangy 03-05-2017 06:32 PM

remove rear seats and put in place a roll cage. Now its a serious racecar

Cole 03-05-2017 06:53 PM

Lol this post is so contradictory.

You claim race car, but want airbags. So what you really want to do is look cool while you're parked at a brzworld meet?

Original post edited because sarcasm was not detected.

Are we talking Top Gear S24E01 here ? And also Top Gear Extra Gear S02E01

(These are episodes containing a new, Red Toyota 86, in which interior panels, including headliner have been removed, roll cage installed)

Thank God for file sharing.

just leave the interior. its kinda nice and you dont really gain anything by ditching it

Okay, sarcasm aside, why do you want to do this? And why only for the summer?

I just think it looks cool. Noone sits back there anyways, but if it's unsafe I'm not gonna do it.

Ah, yes. The "I trashed my interior and can't afford to replace it" look. Very cool.

Like I said before there is nothing unsafe about it really. Just sort of a goofy thing to do for no benefit.

finch1750 03-06-2017 04:47 PM

It will be noisy as hell.

forevergone 03-06-2017 10:03 PM

More cabin noise but that's about it.

I agree that's the same situation I am in. However if he wants to do it this doesn't scream I trashed my car trying to look like something I am not

Kestrel 03-07-2017 12:44 AM

+1000 on that seat delete.

That's the delete kit I have. It was my first mod. I like it, looks real nice. The only problem is you can't put any weight on it, that's why I only clean my back window once a year.

Makes me wonder if it'd be better to just buy some acrylic/plywood, mlv, fabric, and do this yourself. At least then you could make it support weight and maintain some sort of noise control...

Never knew that kit couldnt support any weight at all, especially for the price of the kit.

I can't believe there are still people that think this is how airbags work

EnoOnraefi 03-07-2017 03:20 AM

Zeal86 has a pretty badass looking rear seat delete project going on in his build thread... If you have the ability to make something yourself you might check that out HERE.

It cuts out noise quite well. The bottoms of the flat parts have sound mat glued on and it comes with a couple more sheets of sound material to lay down. Believe me, it is a lot louder with it out. I used hard fasteners to put the bottom 3 pieces together. I have it so 2 wing nuts removes the entire bottom piece when I want in a couple seconds. It it very light weight. I would imagine something made with wood would be quite heavy.

I like it. If you didn't know, you would think the car came that way.

lol yea. But to be fair, it could still be risky if someone who decided to sit back there shorted a connection to the airbag. I think?

Oh, helz noe.

That's worse than running with scissors!

The connections are well secured inside clips and not readily accessible. Besides if there is no seat or seat belts back there then there should not be any passengers anyway. If there are then them somehow managing to set off the airbags would be the least of your worries anyway.
