Feminist Worries Digital Assistants Like Alexa and Siri Will Be Sexually Harassed

1 Attachment(s)
"Self-described feminist Leah Fessler says [ame="https://twitter.com/LeahFessler/status/834429784675459072"]there’s a problem with America’s newfound obsession with digital assistants[/ame] like Siri, Alexa and Cortana: you can sexually harass them for weeks on end and they won’t fight back.
Fessler knows this because she engaged in what she deemed an “experiment:” she, herself, sexually harassed several different digital assistants for more than a month, peppering the poor robots with verbal abuse in order to demonstrate that “something must be done” to protect disembodied computer voices from wanton misogyny and Patriachal violence.
Each bot, Fessler found, “helps entrech sexist tropes through their passivity.” Being programmed as a digital assistant, apparently, makes them not just harmful to themselves, but to the whole of womankind.
She begins by admitting that most digital assistants can be programmed to speak in male voices, but that the sexists in Silicon Valley have discovered women’s voices make more money, so they’ve misogynistically pre-programmed the default setting to female.
She then goes on to methodically detail her robot harassment in a chart, cataloging various responses to her insults as she goes."

I've bet she has had thoughts with the Chief.

Just didn't have a physical body to do so..

Well we can surmise from this "sexual harrassment experiment" which virtual assistant would is the best personality wise. Now we just need gijinka/humanization of the virtual assistants too.

Some guy in our city was in the news a couple years ago because he got caught on surveillance camera in the elevator kicking his guard dog. Maybe pissed on the rug. It wasn't a roundhouse but more like a 13 yard pass. He ended up doing community service iirc.

A few months ago, this guy in the elevator picked up his dog and kissed it on what I thought was the mouth.

I'd say just keep it behind closed doors.

Certainly relevant.

Do people seriously have nothing better to do than to sexually harass siri?? I didn't even think about doing that... How stupid haha.

Is it really any worse than all the other goofy things people ask Siri just to hear the funny responses? There are thousands of things listed that people ask as jokes and Apple specifically programed response for them.
It is just an automated voice on a cell phone not a person that can be "harassed".

Mvhs09 03-04-2017 02:22 PM

Good point... But i can't imagine anyone asking silly questions to these automated programs.

Goggle questions for Siri. there are 1,000s. As soon as a technology is invented somebody finds a way to make a game of it. Just pure human nature.

People do this alllll the time. My favorite is asking what does the fox say

I hate to bring up comedians' version of things because I've heard many have really high, highs, and some have really low, lows. Those that aren't good at it maybe should just keep it to themselves.

I wouldn't be surprised what happened on "Futurama" is what is going to happen. The episode when they clone Lucy Lu, comes to mind.

You want real feedback?

My issue is she claims to not change the setting to the male voice because "she is lazy" but does all this other research to back her point. She also claims it because she prefers the femal voice but then and backs that up with data but then attacks the premise later due to inherit sexism, but the real crap about that is it wouldnt take any time at all to just change it back after said study was done so two very poor excuses.

Heres why I dont think she tried the male voice also. If the male voice gives the same response then her argument isnt as valid because people dont see sexual harassment of men as something thats is as big an issue and won't pull readers with a headline.

And this is why nobody takes them seriously anymore. Not even most women. They're just another part of the whining legion that goes around bitching about non-issues and/or trivial matters, mostly for P.C. reasons.

I wouldnt isolate it to femenists, but any group with a self serving interest will always skew results towards themselves while appearing fair but dont eliminate all variables to really answer the question being tested

Edit: i shouldnt say any group, but many groups will do this.

I think my favorite is they like to throw the wage gap around and conveniently leave out the fact that professions like doctors, scientists, engineers, other tech jobs that tend to pay a lot, are heavily male dominated. So are dangerous jobs, which also tend to pay more.

I have yet to work in a place where males, females, people of all races/colors/creeds are not all on the same pay scale for the same work. This leads me to believe the whiners are either leaving out vital information in order to further their argument or they truly believe that someone with a liberal arts degree in underwater basket weaving should be paid the same as a deep water oil rig welder.

Those facts do not always get left out. There are studies that take that in to account and have shown that job differential doesnt account for much more then half of the pay gap. Also, studies regarding similar education and work experiance have shown gaps still, and while nobody may make the same wage in the private sector when there are big differentials it is something worth looking it.

Yes, there are many people just attacking PC bullshit that detract from valid arguments but that doesnt mean every argument made by a group of people is crap just because who said it.
