Help me plan and get my dream car
Hey guys, before you judge the thread by its title, read it first, its not about me whining, im asking for genuine advice.
I'm a 19 year old dude going to school full time in Vancouver, planning to go to med school, also working 25-30 hours a week @13 dollars to pay for my bills and such. Over the past year and a half, ive become obsessed with owning a BRZ and I've saved up approx $4000 dollars for a down payment to finance the car and I'm asking for your help to guide me into getting this car in the next few months because I know that once I go into med school, I will neither have the time to enjoy my car (I'll be 32 by the time I become a full doctor), nor the money because I'll be hundreds of thousands of dollars into debt. Also, before you tell me to wait another year and save up... The insurance is obviously going to be under my dad's name, and he only visits canada once every 2 years... Now... the other day I saw the thread about everyone mocking the gofundme thing and I thought hey, maybe that'll work for me to get my dream car but I realize and know that it comes off as a very douche bagy move to ask people to help you get your car. Anyway, Im asking for the collective minds of this forum to offer me any guidance / advice to getting my dream car... I dont want this thread to turn into a hate thread, I'm just genuinely asking for some guidance. Thanks |

1. Are you paying rent? 2. Do you have monthly bills? 3. Are you paying for your school/books? I don't mean to dabble into your personal affairs, but maybe these are questions you need to ask yourself. 2017 WRB BRZ |

Preferably a new 2017 or a used 2017, I'm trying to avoid the older years because I know people abuse the shit out of these cars 1. I dont pay rent 2. I pay for my insurance (Drive the family car), gas, cellphone bill, food, clothes, basically anything other than rent is paid for by me. 3. Well since I'm going to med school I just said screw it and I'm just on student loans, so no payments yet. Man I have to say that gofundme thing is very tempting, my friend kept telling me to do it.... |

why are you going to do a gofundme just so that you can buy a car? leave that to life changing incidents that involves REAL and SEVERE consequences. not getting your dream car within the year is not a real life changing experience.
personally, I would tell you to wait until you start school and see how it all goes. I don't know the specifics on your life, but I would say to save your money to slowly pay off school as you're going through it. if you leave it all to pay off after you graduate, you will most likely be living a very hard lifestyle since you will be working many long and hard hours with no money coming in since most of it will be going to daily essentials and loan payments. I would also suggest taking a personal finance class at your local community college, or your medical university if they offer it (community college will probably be cheaper). I am not saying you need it, but it will help you greatly since you will be in a tough situation for a long time when you're going through school and even after you finish. this might be hard to read for a car guy, but your personal life takes priority over your hobbies. |
Rest assured that no one, myself included, will give you a single cent if you try and e-beg.
|
I wasnt intending at all to go through with the gofundme thing, it just isnt right to do, but seeing all this advice, I think I'll hold off for a few more years and decide then... Thank you everyone.
I just hope the BRZ doesnt get discontinued ahah. |

Like, I was helping my girlfriend find a 2000-3000 dollars car, and I was SUPER ANAL about everything. |
Here we spell Doctor with a capital D.
Not sure which Vancouver the OP is from ? These cars are getting so cheap, anybody can afford one...just having fun. Aim your sights a little lower, enjoy a used car to begin with. https://www.cargurus.com/Cars/invent...ting=159201822 |
Dude, my advice is to buy a car worth 4K. You have that already and it would be paid off.
Go to school, get that done. Once you get a job then buy your "dream car". Why add more debt while your in college? Unless you get your parents to pay for it. If that's the case that's I see that as a douchebag move, as well as any go fund me type deal. On that topic the only time I give strangers money to finance their personal toys, is when sex acts are traded. So..... you know. ;) just say'n |
Rent a escalade and get two call girls and 1000 dollars in coke and party. Better return than debt for car
|
Just get a second hand one, still looks the same and does the same
You are already half way in savings to get this one; https://www.cargurus.com/Cars/l-Used...ting=159407105 Sell it in 13 years when you are a rich Doctor and buy your Mercedes.. Problem solved... |
My advice is this. When you buy a car you can't just spend all all your transportation funds on buying the car. You also have to budget your money so that you can afford to take care of said car not just buy it. If you don't do that then you will be in a world of hurt in the future when something inevitably happens. That said with your funds currently available and your plans for the future I would hold off. I don't know how the whole college thing and what not works up there in Vancouver but I would strongly suggest taking the time to apply for grants and scholarships if that is a thing that is possible for you. Taking all the money you need from school loans will buy a lot of financial and mental strain on you once you do complete your schooling. Another thing you may look into is do some soul searching before you commit to the doctor thing. If your sure that is what you want to do then yea go for it. If its no then that is a ton of schooling that really does not translate much to anything else so if a couple years in you decide that is not something you really want to do your going to be up shit creek with alot of debt. You could do it in increments such as start out with the nursing end of things (less schooling less debt). This will also give you the appreciation for your co-workers on that side of the spectrum if/when you decide to become a doctor.
That is my .02 ill get off my soap box now. |
This is a terrible financial move, and honestly, if you really want the car that bad, you will still be able to track one down when you are on better financial footing.
That being said, if you're gonna make a financial mistake, make it while you're young. Sent from my SM-G930W8 using Tapatalk |
I DO NOT want to go to a doctor that can not make decisions on their own about buying a bloody car.
|
You say you are going to be a doctor, how do you know? you are 19 years old. Have you written an MCAT? are you in the 98th percentile? I know doctors, and they didnt know they would be doctors when they were 19. They wanted to be doctors, but that is a very different thing. Getting into Med school in Canada is no walk in the park.
When i was in school obtaining my degree I made some questionable financial decisions. It was very much a situation of future me paying for the fun current me was having. But i had a pretty clear path without anything as significant as waiting to confirm whether I would be accepted into my program in the way. To be honest, you don't seem to grasp the your path or where you will actually be. Your suggestion that once your a doctor you wont be able to afford a BRZ due to crippling student debt is entirely inaccurate. You sound like a 19 year old which is good. When i was 18-21 i owned a series of 10-15 year old cars that I tried to turn into race cars that either failed horribly for obvious reasons or were driven into a wall/pole etc. Did this until I had no money. but all difference between all the money I had and zero money wasnt really a big stretch. Was it smart? No, but I wouldnt go back and do it differently, and it was probably a better move than strapping myself to some 60-70 month car loan. |
OP did you ask your dad for advice first? What did he say?
Your dad probably knows you best and would provide much better advice than a bunch of strangers from a forum on the Internet. My stranger advice is don't do it if you need to ask such a question since you won't have a comfortable time financially owning this car. |
I'm 23 and just bought a series.yellow. If you're trying to buy one of these, you should wait until you get a full-time job after college. So many things change between 19 and your first job. And even then, you need to adjust for paying for rent, bills, utilities, everything and then decide whether or not you can afford it.

As someone who has (and continues to) make bad decisions, the OP needs to save his money and continue to drive whatever he has now, or if he doesn't currently have a vehicle, buy a cheap and reliable one that'll last throughout your schooling. If you become a doctor at age 32, you'll be able to easily afford a BRZ, despite having student loans to pay for. |

If getting the car is going to improve your quality of life, I say go for it. I would recommend buying a car off the forum as most people on here, while they might drive them hard, have taken good care of it along the way. Personally, I would rather buy a car that has been beaten on but well maintained than someone who didn't know the oil change interval but babied the thing around the city.
You are young; if the car is worth it to you, you will find a way to make it work. Luckily if you search and find a good deal on a '14 or '15, you won't be in too deep of a financial hole if something goes terribly wrong. At the end of the day, it's your money and your decision to make. If it's worth it to you, do it. I pulled the trigger on this car when I wasn't financially ready and figured everything out afterwards. But I knew I absolutely loved the car and was willing to sacrifice whatever I had to in order to get a car that I was obsessed with. Good luck with whatever decision you end up making! |
Just run some simple numbers... if you do not have 2x your car payment available every month as disposable income to cover all things car-related, you should not be buying this (or any) car w/ a car payment.
The 2x can budget for anything from insurance, gas, simple maintenance, to unforeseen things like crashes, damage not covered by insurance/warranty, etc. -alex |
So here's the deal:
I had a similar situation as you for a long time. I was 19 or 20-ish when I first learned about the twins and reeeally wanted one. That was about 4 or 5 years ago. At first I thought "well, I think I can afford it" and I got super into the idea of owning one early. Turns out the costs would really get prohibitively expensive unless you're honestly pretty affluent. I don't mean rich, but have a decent source of income. Since you're in school, I'm guessing you have to pay (whether that's your parents, scholarships, or loans that pay) tuition bills. I highly recommend taking a pass on this car for now, getting a job if you don't have one, and working your way up. Save some money now if you can and buy a cheaper car. For me personally, I ended up working all through college, saved if/whenever I could, and am finally buying the car now (graduated late last year and have a full time career job now). Don't push it unless you know you'll be comfortable affording the costs. |
So im 23, Graduated 1 years ago.
Started college at 19, same in your situation I work part time 30/week hour while maintaining full time school. I actually had a car but I SOLD it before I started school and took public transit for 3 years, school is a whole lot of stress man the last thing you need is to worry about your financial situation. OR worst you might have to work more to pay for the car, then your schooling will go down the drain. Just wait till you're graduated. that's what I did. |

This times a million. It needs to be repeated for everyone that is around our age and wants a new car. I'm 22 and started my full time position in January. I ordered the car in November because I knew that after my graduation in december I already had my full time position lined up, I knew a ballpark of what my salary would be, and I knew exactly how much I could afford. After a lot of consideration for how much I wanted to spend on modifications, what my insurance cost would be, what my average monthly gas cost would be, I pulled the trigger on an order for the 17 BRZ with performance package. Buying a car isn't really something that a fresh graduate can do on impulse, it really takes a lot of planning to make sure you don't screw yourself financially. |
I was 41 years old before I could afford my first new car.
Life is a real bitch sometimes. |

But this is quite refreshing from all the rich kids driving the usual exotic cars running around Vancity these days.
|
I still remember when I was in a similar situation as you when I was your age.
Here is the car I lusted for (and still do actually): https://s21.postimg.org/srlwk01fb/AE86_Front.jpg https://s13.postimg.org/f9om1a2k7/AE86_Rear.jpg Back on topic: I studied biology before switching over to engineering. About 25% of the class in first year said they wanted to go to med school (class size of ~600?). After third year, one guy I knew got into med school (McMaster), then another two got in after finishing their undergrad (one continued at University of Toronto, second guy went to the Caribbean's). Of course I didn't know everyone in the class but I would imagine <2.5% make it to med school, then who knows how many actually graduate. Some peeps went to pharmacy school, some did their masters and few completed their PhDs. Not trying to rain on your parade - maybe you're part of that small percentage who will end up in med school and graduate. Personally, I would hold off until school is over. Good luck and WORK HARD! |
Here's the question no one's asked yet: do you NEED a car or do you WANT a car?
If you need a car, then take that 4k and buy a lemon. If you don't know how to drive manual, buy a manual car and beat the shit out of it in order to help you learn so you'll be ready when you get a twin. Wanting something is completely different. Think about human desire; one month we may be obsessed about something to the point where it drives us insane, then the next month we forget about it and move on to something else. You may think that you want a BRZ now but what about in 4-5 years? What if another awesome cheap sports car is launched that you like even more than the BRZ? You said yourself that you won't be able to enjoy the BRZ during med school, so think about your perception of the car as the weeks drag by, the payments pile on. Soon enough you'll be in a financial hurricane and every time you see your BRZ it'll only remind you of how screwed you are, and you'll eventually begin to view the car as the sole reason why you're in a rut and you'll hate it, and by the time you're through med school and in a job you'll be so sick of the car that you won't even want it anymore. I know how wanting something that bad feels; you basically convince yourself that you will want the thing forever and nothing but that single thing can satisfy your craving. But it never lasts, never. You're young, and I'm young too, so we're more vulnerable to drastically changing wants and desires than the older members here. We're in what I like to call our "quarter-life crisis", which is just like a mid-life crisis but without the means of paying for what we want. The best thing for you to do is to forget about the BRZ and focus on school, give it a few years. I know it seems like forever, but it'll pass faster than you think it will, and I bet that once you have enough money to buy a BRZ you'll already be wanting something else. Good luck with med school btw. |

fuck it man. i say go for it. you are going to be golden once you pay off the car and graduate school. just dont get ****ed on the interest rate. im assuming youll be a first time buyer but that is a nice dowb payment on that car. save maybe 1-2 more thousand (not for the down payment, for oh shit emergency money) and youll be fine. ill be done paying mine off when im 34 next year. as long as you can afford all your shit and do well in school i say do it man. |
I'm going to get killed for saying this on a BRZ forum, but if you want a fun RWD sports car, four grand will get you a decent NA Miata.
:iono: :wrongforum: |
I've got both a brz and a miata and this is definitely a miata situation.
|
Wow, I cant believe how amazing this forum is, supportive, and very helpful with the advice.
Thank you so much guys. I think ill save up another 5-6k and then buy one. |
Get a beater and save your money. Once you get a decent job you can get the car. As you make more money you will see your dream car change and go up in price. We have all been there. Used for sure unless you get a sweet job.
|
Quote:
Same, and I second this. My Miata may actually be my favorite car by virtue of what you get for the money and the fun of having a beater car. If I put my Z or twin on a track and wreck it, I lose a very rare color option that I can't replace or an expensive newish car respectively. If I hit a tire wall in the Miata, I just buy a new fender or another $2-3,000 dirt cheap POS and swap the aftermarket parts over. I can push it hard and learn good driving and car control without having to fear what happens if I make a mistake. It is my best car and my worst car at the same time in that respect, but I definitely love having a cheap, crappy car. Get yourself a cheap Miata or 240 and go enjoy it at a track/autocross/back road. Let off some steam when you're not studying, and do it in a way that you aren't losing much if something bad happens. |
Just buy the Lamborghini already and warp past your future mid-life crisis..
