Weir Performance 5.29 Final Drive Video

Greetings all,

I just thought I post a video after we installed a 5.29 Weir Performance Final Drive. I found very few videos when I was researching so this might help those thinking about getting something very similar. Enjoy the video.

Thanks for sharing. I know many people are looking for such videos, as I did before getting the 4.88 FD.

Below is the 4.88 FD from weir performance.

Awesome videos guys.
I was actually thinking of going 4.88 since I have the auto.

Hey @kitlives do you have a video of the speedometer going thru gears? Would like to see what your shift points are with the 5.29 Thanks .

I have 4.88s with the auto and love it.

zerocool86 02-18-2017 03:05 PM

@Lunatic , What is your RPM at in 6th? I use 5th mainly to just stay in the 3k range around 70.

Did you use the weir FD as well?

Teseo 02-18-2017 05:42 PM

@kitlives
1st gear still useful on city driving, like stop and go traffic.
Do you pay for installation?

-Willis-86touge 02-18-2017 08:14 PM

Love to see one vs like s2000 or something

2750 rpm in 6th gear @70 mph.

I just bought the ring and pinion from them. The shop that installed it did the rest.

You bough the installation kit? Pinion nut, shims etc.?

It's been so long ago now I really don't remember. My installer had all the shims.

That don't sound right to me. What size tires you running. I'm running 255/40/17 which is 25" dia. 78.6 circumference.

Somerandom18 02-19-2017 05:51 PM

Stock size 215/45. I was wrong though 4k is at 80. 70 is about 3500. Still a lot higher.

i think my 70mph tach reading in 6th with my 4.56 rear is 3300+

You have to remember the above graph is with a standard 4 speed whose 4th gear is 1 to 1 ratio. Our 6 speed transmissions are over drive so that chart would not be accurate for us.

80 for me is 3100.

Not exactly, that is a chart from Spencer Fabrications page for their BRZ/FRS gear ratio swap page. That is factoring in the correct ratio for 6th. It's pretty spot on.

Boy it doesn't come close to my readings. But maybe they are using the manual trans and I think my automatic has a different 6th gear ratio.

Makes no diff to me. I love my 4.88's.

Automatic does have different ratios on all of the gears, not just 6th. Gears are longer in the auto.

chaoscentral 02-21-2017 10:33 AM

oh no I know, but I'm 95% sure that page is geared more for the manual.

Stock is about 3100rpm for a manual in 6th at 70mph, so 3300ish sounds about right with a shorter final drive.

I've seen Lunatic preach this on many threads and I finally pulled the trigger today and installed 4.88 weir gears on my AT FRS.

Simply put, this car should have come like this from factory. Driving around town is a breeze and the car revs and accelerates a lot quicker.

11/10 would recommend. $1100 well spent imo.

Just emailed Spencer earlier. Looking at some 5.29 for my 2013 FR-S Auto :)

I've been thinking of that myself someday. Let us know how you like it.

I have a 5.29 in my manual. If you guys have any questions about it I'll be happy to answer them.

Did you changed to an LSD? Speedometer is fuck up? 1st gear still useable? Noise at all when cruising? Overall feelings

jdair28 09-06-2017 12:00 PM

@Lunatic did you install the 4.88 on the stock Torsen for your auto?

TRAKRAVN 09-06-2017 12:00 PM

Yes I changed to an 1.5/2.0 way M Factory LSD. Set up as a 1.5way 100% engagement with the steeped ramp.

The Speedometer reads the same as it did before, or at least I didn't notice anything different.

1st gear is still useable it is very short though. It makes hill starts really easy. I think it maxes out around 40kph. As short as it is I don't know anyone who cruises in 1st gear anyway so it's not a fair statement to say the taller gear makes it unusable.

There is along noise at cruising from 80-90kph but I believe this is more from the AL driveshaft and the fact that I have solid subframe bushings. There is also noise at low speed turning from the rear diff. It sounds like a racket sometimes. It doesn't bother me because I know what it is.

Overall feelings I would do it again for sure. I did the hearing before I did the 60R catback. On the highway now I could do without the exhaust noise. That being said I would change the exhaust and not the gearing. On the track the 5.29 performs close to the same as a supercharged car but without the reliability concerns.

Tire size won't effect the displayed speed vs rpm. The only time tire size will show a difference in speed is if you're reading by GPS or from outside the car.

Most older cars a changed final drive would affect the speed displayed, but these cars use the wheel speed sensors not a sensor in the gearbox (before the final drive).

Ah I see. May I ask why you went aftermarket? I'm interested in the 4.88 swap but was unsure if it would work best on the stock Torsen or an aftermarket 1.5 way or 2 way LSD. Mine's an auto too. Are there better LSD's out there that are better at transferring power to the wheel?

Surething. This is comparing laptimes between cars and top speeds hit on the striaghts at shannonville. The supercharged car with coilovers and Federal tires (my car is stock suspension on 215 RE17R) is about 0.5 second faster per lap and hits about 5kph faster on the straights. When we drag at lunch on the straight for fun the two cars are about even maybe the supercharged car gets about 1/2 a car length depending on the launch. Data is collected with the Aim SoloDL.

Reliability wise I have an upgraded rad and oil cooler. I just change fluids and check them without worrying about heat soak, belt tensioners and whatever else goes along with that. It was also about 1/3-1/2 the price for the gears, LSD and diff cover.

If you are local to Brampton you can come drive it for yourself to see how it feels then post your opinion in the thread. The more out there the better since it's not a very common thing to have done.
