Weir Performance 5.29 Final Drive Video
Greetings all,
I just thought I post a video after we installed a 5.29 Weir Performance Final Drive. I found very few videos when I was researching so this might help those thinking about getting something very similar. Enjoy the video. Thanks for sharing. I know many people are looking for such videos, as I did before getting the 4.88 FD. Below is the 4.88 FD from weir performance. [ame="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BW6mmZgQ4KM"]Weir Performance 4.88 FD FA20 Toyota 86 - YouTube[/ame] Sorry if I derailed your thread. |
Awesome videos guys.
I was actually thinking of going 4.88 since I have the auto. Hey @kitlives do you have a video of the speedometer going thru gears? Would like to see what your shift points are with the 5.29 Thanks . |

@Lunatic , What is your RPM at in 6th? I use 5th mainly to just stay in the 3k range around 70.
Did you use the weir FD as well? |
@kitlives
1st gear still useful on city driving, like stop and go traffic. Do you pay for installation? |
Love to see one vs like s2000 or something

I just bought the ring and pinion from them. The shop that installed it did the rest. |

Stock size 215/45. I was wrong though 4k is at 80. 70 is about 3500. Still a lot higher.

i think my 70mph tach reading in 6th with my 4.56 rear is 3300+

You have to remember the above graph is with a standard 4 speed whose 4th gear is 1 to 1 ratio. Our 6 speed transmissions are over drive so that chart would not be accurate for us.

oh no I know, but I'm 95% sure that page is geared more for the manual.

Simply put, this car should have come like this from factory. Driving around town is a breeze and the car revs and accelerates a lot quicker. 11/10 would recommend. $1100 well spent imo. |

I have a 5.29 in my manual. If you guys have any questions about it I'll be happy to answer them.

@Lunatic did you install the 4.88 on the stock Torsen for your auto?
|
Yes I changed to an 1.5/2.0 way M Factory LSD. Set up as a 1.5way 100% engagement with the steeped ramp.
The Speedometer reads the same as it did before, or at least I didn't notice anything different. 1st gear is still useable it is very short though. It makes hill starts really easy. I think it maxes out around 40kph. As short as it is I don't know anyone who cruises in 1st gear anyway so it's not a fair statement to say the taller gear makes it unusable. There is along noise at cruising from 80-90kph but I believe this is more from the AL driveshaft and the fact that I have solid subframe bushings. There is also noise at low speed turning from the rear diff. It sounds like a racket sometimes. It doesn't bother me because I know what it is. Overall feelings I would do it again for sure. I did the hearing before I did the 60R catback. On the highway now I could do without the exhaust noise. That being said I would change the exhaust and not the gearing. On the track the 5.29 performs close to the same as a supercharged car but without the reliability concerns. |

Most older cars a changed final drive would affect the speed displayed, but these cars use the wheel speed sensors not a sensor in the gearbox (before the final drive). |

Reliability wise I have an upgraded rad and oil cooler. I just change fluids and check them without worrying about heat soak, belt tensioners and whatever else goes along with that. It was also about 1/3-1/2 the price for the gears, LSD and diff cover. |

If you are local to Brampton you can come drive it for yourself to see how it feels then post your opinion in the thread. The more out there the better since it's not a very common thing to have done. |
