Potential 86 New Owner - Pricing/Negotiating Qs
Hi folks,
Long long time lurker, 2nd-time(?) poster, and after years of following the car from it's concept days, I'm finally looking to join your fine ranks as a 86 owner. I'm now in the market for a 2017 86 (white/manual) and have started the email 'give me a quote please' tango with a few dealers in my region (Seattle/Portland) to negotiate the best possible deal. This is after having test driven one last weekend and sitting through ~2hrs of some high pressure sales tactics, which I happily walked away from. Did some browsing some of the ol' "how much did you pay" threads for some anecdotal numbers, but haven't seen a recent one pop-up and was hoping for a little input on realistic targets to hit to make me finally pull the trigger. I've used resources like truecar, costco and such, to get a rough idea of where dealer invoice sits, but who knows how accurate that really is. I'm aware there are several factors in play (region, timing, inventory, etc) but would you say that a ~$23-24k sale price is attainable? Thanks in advance for the input :) Cheers |
No, probably not.

Look at the invoice price including delivery and that is the lowest you could get the car for unless they are willing to take a loss, which is unlikely. A couple hundred over invoice is probably the best price you can get.

Thanks, always good to hear a few opinions to temper expectations. |

As someone who works for a Toyota dealership, my suggestion to you would be to look up your local dealership(s) inventory and see if they have what you want in stock. If they do, see what options are on that particular unit. Go to Edmunds.com and build the car exactly as it is equipped, and put in your zip code. What ever the fair market price that they spit out would be a good deal, and one that they will likely take. If they say no, simply thank them for their time and move on.

I'm from the Los Angeles area, but I ended up at $29,500 OTD including tax and license for my 2017 MT in Raven. I tried the email / phone cal tactic, but with such limited inventory it was difficult to track down my car as is. Out of three dealerships, this was the best deal I got on the car. Not the greatest, but combined with the 1.9% financing I didn't mind.
Best of luck! |
Got mine for $28.5k out the door. Managed to onlY get $500 off... And that's pushing it :(

Also curious, keeping an eye on this thread! I'm interested in getting a blue manual 86. Good luck getting the white one! Oh yeah, also in the Seattle area. :P

2009 Accord 2dr w/ 50k miles in great shape; clean title, zero issues mechanically and cosmetically (aside from normal-use wear n tear). Shooting for $8-$8.5 trade-in per NADA values. |

Yeah, mark-up is fairly minimal and these certainly aren't the surplus of camry's and prius' on the lot I'm finding. Right now is about the most ideal time for me to get into one and the 1.9% is decent. Likely won't do much better unless I opt to wait until the 2018s show up... and wait and wait -- missing out on actually enjoying the damn thang for another year. |

I am in the middle of my deal right now and should close within the next day or 2. I am also going after a white/manual 86. Price agreed on was $26100 including paint mark up of $395 and Aquisition fee of $650. Completely base model with zero addons.
I have been working on this since early Jan. and have contacted probably every single Toyota dealer within 150 milez. I found that: 1) There are way more auto than manual, let alone white 2) White is $395 more 3) Inventory is very low, but most dealers are somewhat willing to work with me. 4) Black and red color are the common colors for manual. If you are flexable on color you can probably go lower since these cars in these 2 colors are usually in stock sitting at some lot 5) Be careful of dealer addons Hope this info helps |

That helps a ton and just about mirrors my situation right now. Thanks for detailing and good luck with your sale. Should all work out, we'll have new twin, twins. |
My 2013 limited was $3k off list at end of model year. 2014s were on the lot.
Timing and dealer motivation has a lot to do with the deal you get. I wouldn't peg invoice as a good target either. There are some interesting articles about "invoice creep". best way is deal with the internet sales person at 5 dealerships and let them get into a bidding war for your business. Also "wring the towel three times". For every offer they make counter. 3 cycles. You will know when you hit their rock bottom by the look on their faces or email tone. It's amateur hour dealing with most of these guys. |
Good luck, I paid 25,500 + 699 dealer fee on a 2017 halo manual. It was a lot of back and forth but they finally gave me what I was asking for. Just a tip, I had already been approved by my credit union(I did not show them any proof of this), they were offering a finance special of no payments for 90 days. The dealer gave me a lower rate and also matched the no payments for 90. If you have good credit from what I understand many dealers can do this. You just have to ask or tell them your credit union is doing that. It's a great way to throw a couple months worth of car payments at some mods!

If you're in Canada you can get $750 rebate for running two 5k events, no matter how slow.

Best not to bring up possible trade-in until AFTER you have established a purchase price.
Like above poster said .... get your finances in order before shopping. Rates are going up, so you need to move on this now. Forget about all the dealer add-ons like extended warranty, paint protection, interior protection, tint, etc. etc. You can always get these yourself afterwards. |
Update: I got it :) A new '17 Halo manual is now home with me.
A couple weeks of email negotiation payed off. Got to an agreed upon sale price of $25,600, the trade-in value I wanted, and the 1.9% financing. Big thanks to everyone who chimed in, the additional insight was much appreciated  Cheers! |
Congrats man.
