questions about new BRZ (2017)

I am looking to purchase either the BRZ or the 86, but I need some more information that I can't seem to find. First, I went to the "build" page on Subaru and it gave two choices for the 6 speed manual. One was "limited" and one was "premium". The one thing I noticed was the price increase on the limited, but I could not see the noticeable differences. Maybe I wasn't looking hard enough.
I understand that the 86 and the BRZ are pretty much the same car, but it appears that Subaru gives more options and package choices. On the 86, one of the options is the TRD dual exhaust. If I go with the 86 and don't choose the dual exhaust option, do I get only one exhaust pipe? I couldn't see any pictures of the "stock" exhaust.
I guess the best thing for me to do is visit both Toyota and Subaru dealerships and compare. Thanks!

visit a dealer for specifics of the differences. heated seats, keyless entry/start, and trunk spoiiler come to mind as possibilities.

2 exhaust outlets standard.

trippinbillies40 02-15-2017 02:51 PM

Limited adds:

Available auto tranny
Available performance package with 7.5" wheels, brembo brakes and sachs dampers
Heated side mirrors
Heated front seats
Alcantara/Leather trimmed upholstery
4.2" Digital screen in gauge cluster
Lit sun visors
Keyless access
Dual zone climate control
Standard fog lights

Let me know if you have any other questions!

The 86 comes standard with a dual exhaust, like the BRZ.

You need to do a lot more reading, studying.

The 86 comes in just one model...which is a basic, no frills model.

The BRZ comes in two models...Premium (a basic model) and Limited (includes more standard features). Limited can be ordered with an additional package, called Performance Package.

Both 86 and BRZ are essentially the same car under their skins.
Both cars have slightly additional power when ordered with a manual transmission.

The base model of 86 now costs slightly more than the base model (premium) of the BRZ...and for no apparent good reason. If you want a new car, don't need all the bells and whistles, your best bet overall (price wise) is a BRZ Premium with manual transmission...and no options.

The best place to buy this car is a big city where competition is king...even if you must travel to get a car. These are very reliable cars, so no need to live near your Dealership.

KB_BRZ 02-15-2017 03:37 PM

Essentially they are the same car, 86 and the premium brz are comparable. The difference with the 86 are going to be in the front end (lights, bumper, fogs, lip), sides mostly badging and wheel, and in the rear the spoiler. As stated above the limited comes with "convenience" like keyless entry, heat warmers, and dual zone climate. Limited also gives you the option to get the performance package which is also stated above with brakes, wheels, and shocks. Also the radio headhunts are different so look into that as well

Alcantara/Leather trimmed upholstery Red "BRZ" embroidered headrests
4.2" Digital screen in gauge cluster with steering wheel controls

Keyless access with Push to Start
Dual zone climate control
Standard fog lights
Open Door/Ground lighting (standard just has a reflector)
Faux carbon fiber interior trim over the standard gloss black

added (in bold)

the spoiler is now standard on all models 2017+

Only buy a limited. Spring for performance package. That way you have the least amount of depreciation, and the most desirable model available.

Don't forget the keyhole for the trunk and the alarm.

Also, BRZ has trunk lid liner and full underbody aero.

So all BRZ facelift models now come with full underbody aero?

This wasn't the case with the pre-facelift and only the Series.Blue had it.

Yup. CSG has/had a Premium that showed it had full underbody aero.

Somerandom18 02-16-2017 11:53 AM

My 17 premium has it. Makes transmission fluid changes annoying.

As people have already mentioned the stock exhaust is already a dual exhaust but it's very quiet. The TRD exhaust is a loud, more free flowing dual exhaust. The good thing about Toyota is you can get TRD lowering springs, rims, air filter, exhaust and then include all that in your financing.

But if you don't need the financing, the better value is getting the Subaru BRZ with performance package to get Brembo brakes and Sachs dampers. Then you pay cash for any brand you want for lowering springs, rims, air filter/exhaust, and whatever else you are looking for.

2015+ BRZ had it, I bought some for my 2014 BRZ Limited.
It was cheap, got it for $180 shipped form a vendor on the forums. Vendor shut down though.

Thin black plastic. Kind of like fender liners, but for under the car. Actually, I think at least one panel is metal. I could be wrong though?

I really want a set, but it's hard spending $200 on plastic. I'm waiting for a used set to pop up on the classifieds.

I think fiberglass, I had a few weird splinters in my gloves, didn't know if it came from my friends garage, my car, or the aero parts underneath. They looked like fiberglass.
No metal on mine.

I think the lowest I seen it is $175.

Yea it's nice that was one of the first things I bought for the car, had to import from Japanparts back in the day.

It's ABS plastic I think. Funny how my grandma used to tell me how plastic goods used to be quite expensive back in her day, just like how carbon fiber is today.

Thank you all for your suggestions and support. Now I have the information need to make my choices.

Just wish North America had the auto folding side mirrors like Japan.
That would have been ultimate on urban city streets.

Eu doesn't have it either. You turn off the engine and realise you didn't fold the mirror. Either start it up again or press start button twice->fold mirrors->press start button once. A bit annoying.

They're definitely fiber reinforced plastic (i.e. fiberglass), and not just ABS or urethane. If they were just injection molded ABS the price would be crazy but it's not bad for what they really are. They also help a bit with sound it seems.

Hell, we don't get power folding mirrors at all in the states. I have yet to look to see if the wiring is there to add them, as I manually fold mine all the time.

with the LED fog lights - is there a bulb that can changed or are they an all in one kind of thing

No bulb.
All one unit.

Our side mirrors manually fold?

I tried one time and thought I was going to break it.

justinco 02-21-2017 01:04 PM

Sounds like you got a lot of answers already, but I will add my thoughts. I looked at both Premium & Limited models, the Limited model is worth it (IMO). Not sure if it was mentioned, but the Premium models do not have the new in dash digital display either, which is kind of nice.

I felt the BRZ was much nicer quality on the interior compared to my old FRS (granted the FRS was not a new 86).

In the US they are manual.
Just push it, it'll go.
