is the FR-S worth purchasing?

since scion is no longer a company is it a smart idea to buy a FR-S over a BRZ?

DGM-BRZ 01-31-2017 11:20 PM

Depends what you're doing with the car. The BRZ is basically the more upscale version of the FRS.

If it's going to be a daily car, I'd get the BRZ. Heated seats, better interior, better headlights, etc.

If it's strictly a track car, the FRS is probably better.

Cole 01-31-2017 11:33 PM

Pick a brand, pick the features you want and go from there.

I got a base frs because I didn't care for heated seats or dual zone climate controls. It also didn't hurt that I got around 2500 off the purchase price.

But yeah, the firs is an awful DD. dunno how people live without heated seats when it's 30*C outside.

Yep, you can always rebadge it to Toyota get JDM GT86 style headlights with HID Kit, clear corners, TRD Spoiler and boom you got a car just as good looking as the BRZ :)

The_Understated 01-31-2017 11:58 PM

Same as above, just figure out the style you prefer and price point you're comfortable with. Then compare what features/quality of life upgrades you want. Personally I find the seats super comfy so dailying isn't an issue for me. I bought the base FRS because I wanted to race it at the track and autocross, so no need for the luxury upgrades. YMMV

EDIT: Just for clarification (and to answer your question), Toyota shutdown Scion, but that doesn't mean the FRS disappeared. It's now a Toyota FRS. So the choice between FRS versus BRZ comes down to what creature comforts/style you want.

I don't understand any part of that sentence.

Ok grammar nazi.

Here's the correction.

Pick and choose, with the FRS you can rebadge it, change headlights, side corners.

It wasn't your grammar, it was because you were on my lawn.

It doesn't really matter, just pick the one that has the transmission you prefer and is a pretty color ..... :)

Terrible idea. Buy a Miata instead

FR-Sky 02-01-2017 03:05 AM

They both are the same car...just different badge and interior features.
Get as cheap as you can,,and as low mileage as you can.

Not sure I understand the concern over Scion being gone. Scion wasn't a "company" at any point. It was a marketing division of Toyota. Toyota is still around and so is anything to do with Scion warranties, service, etc. The only change is a badge and the signs at the dealership.

Braces 02-01-2017 08:59 AM

I see where the OP is going. I have to admit I would hesitate to purchase a brand that no longer exists ..... even though technically (as TCoat stated) is does exist. But that's just me.

Personally .... looks like you live in NY. Get whatever car has better amenities. Heated seats would be nice during those NY winters.

8RZ 02-01-2017 09:08 AM

I wouldn't hesitate at all, Scion or Subie. Just find a good car, like others have mentioned.

I would agree if Scion was a brand and actually made the cars. They weren't and didn't.

All you guys clamoring for heated seats are pussies.

Are your mangina's so delicate that they can't stand a little bit of cold?

I hate heated seats! As they slowly warm up it feels like you pissed yourself. Once warm you get ass crack sweat while the rest of you freezes.

daiheadjai 02-01-2017 09:48 AM

My wife loved heated seats, but ironically the passenger side heated seat of my BRZ never seemed to work right (very slow to warm up - like 20-30minutes).

If I need to warm my buns, I'll just fart and accomplish 2 goals.

Didn't care much for heated seats, just wear long johns or a jacket and gloves.

I hear this all of the time and it's false.

Toyota offered the Limited Model FR-S as a Scion Release Series with the same features of the brz limited it's just different marketing techniques.
My 10 Series and RS 1.0 both are listed as "Limited Models".

From what I was told the 2018 Toyota 86 will be offered with different trim levels.

Thats what I was gonna say. The only thing thats going to change on the car is the badge. Scion closing means nothing to the FR-S/86.

Hey,

It gets cold in Arizona.

LOLS2K 02-01-2017 10:35 AM

You're better off buying a Miata with heated seats option. /thread

Let's also not forget that some just want a bare bones car and don't want the "extras".

Personally, the only thing I even want from the nicer (ie, more expensive models) is the dual zone CC. Have it in my truck and it's fantastic. Nice to set it and forget it for longer drives.

Or just CC it doesn't need to be dual zone. That and the keyless ignition would be the only extras I would like. One of the big draws of the FRS was in fact the lack of a pile of things I would never use.

gramicci101 02-01-2017 11:10 AM

Honestly the interior amenities and HID headlights were the reasons I got a limited BRZ over a premium. If I had known the FRS was a thing, it would have been the same deal. The cars are all the same, but I wanted alcantara, push button start, HIDs, climate control, and heated seats. The FRS and BRZ premium at the time didn't have these things.

Packofcrows 02-01-2017 11:12 AM

Yep. $10k for a FRS Vs. 30k for a BRZ/T86

Save $20k you can use on anything.

Where are you buying $10K FRSs?

Keyless ignition would be nice.

My last 3 cars had it and after 3 years I still jump in and try to push the non existent button. Although I have now developed the habit of leaving the wife's car (does have it) running and walking away because there was no key to pull out.

I've never had a car with keyless ignition. The S2000 had push button start, but required the key in the ignition :bellyroll:
I get what you mean about those little habits that we develop. I always kick for the imaginary clutch pedal in my wife's car.

finch1750 02-01-2017 11:58 AM

I could care less about heated seats but the heated steering wheel in my buddies bimmer is legit. Twins need that option

OP didn't specify so I just assumed regular FRS trim.

But yes, if you get the release series or RS, you can get the same features as the BRZ.

Happy with my FR-S, no interest in the supposed 'upgrades' Subaru offers, regardless of price.

The savings in pocket was just a happy bonus imo. If my car got wrecked, I'd look at other options, but odds are high I'd pick up a used '14-'15 FR-S, MT, Hot Lava, and buy a non-touchscreen head unit from the '13.
