Subwoofer, Capacitor & Amplifier install (10/20/12):
a friend and i started and completed our first subwoofer install in a car in a record time of about 7 hours. my friends an electrical engineer so he did all the connections. i decided to try my hand at popping out the panels and running the cables for the first time and it went fairly well aside from one misstep, which was just a complete lack of thinking on my part. i managed to get all the panels out easy, but i wanted to put my bass remote in the little cubby next to the usb and aux ports. so i got that out and without thinking put it face down on concrete and proceeded to drill. i finished drilling to find the front all scratched up as you'll see below. completely stupid, i know, but it became a good thing when i decided i had to get carbon fiber vinyl and try my hand at wrapping some panels. https://dl.dropbox.com/u/71070185/photos/mods/sub.JPG we installed a Pioneer TS-SWX310 powered by a JVC KS-AX3101D. bought everything i needed for the install in under $400. after using the setup for a week i absolutely love it. yea, it takes up half of the already small trunk, but i didn't buy the car for storage. it fills in the missing low end and takes some of the pressure away from the door speakers, stopping them from constantly rattling. i listen to a wide variety of music and this things great with all of them. Carbon Fiber Vinyl Panels (10/26/12): sorry for the terrible photos. i did the cubby that i messed up as well as the two panels by the head unit and passenger airbag. it was my first time doing anything like this, but it ended up taking a lot longer than i thought it would and by the time i finished it was pretty much dark out. i'll take some better pictures soon. https://dl.dropbox.com/u/71070185/ph...ods/vinyl2.JPG https://dl.dropbox.com/u/71070185/ph...ods/vinyl3.JPG https://dl.dropbox.com/u/71070185/ph...ods/vinyl4.JPG https://dl.dropbox.com/u/71070185/ph...ods/vinyl1.JPG Chrome Amber Bulbs (10/26/12): this was an easy one and i'm sure everyone's already seen it, but yea, i swapped the amber turn signal bulbs for chrome amber ones. looks so much better and was only about 20 bucks shipped. these are the bulbs i ordered: http://www.hidlightsusa.com/shopping...s&sc=7440/7443. 1 pair of each (7443 in the front and 7440 in the back). the DIY i checked prior to doing this (another first) said i would need to take out the side markers to do the front, but i found that unnecessary. after i took out the 3 pop rivets, i was able to stick my hand in and pull out the socket, replace and put it back without any issue. replacing these 4 bulbs probably took about 10 minutes. again sorry for shitty night pic. https://dl.dropbox.com/u/71070185/ph...hromebulbs.JPG |
here's a better daytime shot of the top 2 panels:

35% Tint on Sides and Rear (11/16/12):
not as dark as i thought it'd be (first time getting tint on a car), but i'm happy with it. been about 2 days and i still have some bubbles. hopefully they'll go away but i imagine it will take a while as it's pretty cold. https://dl.dropbox.com/u/71070185/ph...2014.13.29.jpg Winter Tires Ready to Go (11/17/12): 205/50R17 General Altimax Arctics on stock wheels and Arcan XL325R Low Porfile Jack. got everything ready to go. gonna use summers a little longer though as it's not below 40 regularly yet. https://dl.dropbox.com/u/71070185/ph...2014.12.17.jpg |
WORKS Exhale Resonated Axle-Back & 35W 5000K HIDs (1/17/13):
my first exhaust for any car i've ever owned. very excited. looking to install this weekend if all goes well although it's getting pretty cold out. that's really the only thing i see stopping me, haha. we'll see. also got 35W 5000K HIDs, which will go in once i get the reverse LEDs i ordered. i want to do the stock bulb to led/hid swap all at once. https://dl.dropbox.com/u/71070185/ph...s/exhaust1.JPG https://dl.dropbox.com/u/71070185/ph...s/exhaust2.JPG |
sadly reverse light LED's never seemed worth it for me, cree, SMD, etc, they looked nice but a basic bulb or a higher end normal filament bulb always provide a better light :(
i spent good money on the Cree's too |

those will work decently just because they produce 360 degrees of light as opposed to directional
|
I'm gonna need vids/ pics / reviews of that exhaust!!

WORKS Exhale Resonated Axle-Back (1/19/13):
installed it this afternoon. the install was pretty straightforward, but the damn hangers. real pain in the ass to get out. definitely have some WD40 on hand as they're in there good. took about 15-20min to swap the exhausts. initial impressions? sounds fucking incredible. it was definitely louder than i expected, but it sounds great. in-cabin is also pretty loud when you're driving locally, lots of starting and stopping. on the highway though, after the speeding up to get to coasting speed, it's not bad at all. there's really not that much drone when you're not pushing the car. on my first drive i was definitely a bit paranoid (first exhaust), but second drive i was already used to it and i am really enjoying it. https://dl.dropbox.com/u/71070185/ph...s/exhaust3.JPG also noticed that it's a bit lopsided. i gotta fix that tomorrow. i think it's just a matter of adjusting the hanger grommets on the right side. right now though they won't stay in any position other than all the way down because of all the WD40 i used on them haha. |

after using it a little over a week now, i gotta say i absolutely love it. i've gotten used to it and almost wish it was louder now, haha. but yea if a nice deep note is all you're looking for, you can't go wrong with this exhaust. especially for the price. |

WeatherTech All Vehicle Mats (1/30/13):
https://dl.dropbox.com/u/71070185/ph...hertechavm.JPG posted this review in another thread but figured i'd put it up here. picked them up from pepboys for $50 and they are exactly what i wanted, a nice heavy rubber mat that fits great and won't shift around. drove around with them for a couple of days now and i couldn't be happier with them. no sliding around at all and they cover the bulk of the floor. i cut them to fit pretty well, using the stock carpet mats as templates. the driver's side required the removal of 3 sections while the passenger size fit as is. i used a utility knife to cut them as i found it easier than scissors. lastly, i made a quick image to show the pieces i cut out for anybody who would like to do the same: https://dl.dropbox.com/u/71070185/ph...hertechavm.png |
35W 5000k DDMTuning HIDs (2/24/13):
finally got around to installing these. did the mudguards today as well, but it was pretty late and it's too dark to take pics. the first 3 are unmodified pics i took of the HIDs. the 4th one is what the 3rd one looks like in real life. i dunno where the camera found that blue tint. https://dl.dropbox.com/u/71070185/ph...ods/hids/1.jpg https://dl.dropbox.com/u/71070185/ph...ods/hids/2.jpg https://dl.dropbox.com/u/71070185/ph...ods/hids/3.jpg https://dl.dropbox.com/u/71070185/ph...ods/hids/4.jpg install was relatively simple until i had to turn the bulb in the housing to lock it in. such a pain in the ass, it wouldn't click in. i got it eventually, but it was pretty rough lol. bulbs do look great. my main concern was having to bend the squirrel finders because i thought it was irreversible, but honestly they bend so easily that i think i could probably bend them back up if i ever needed to. the cutoff of the light seems to be fine based on my drive (it should be the same as stock height i'd imagine), but i intend to try to do what it says in this post: http://www.ft86club.com/forums/showp...91&postcount=2 tomorrow night and adjust them if necessary. having never had HIDs before, i think that they look incredible. Edit: forgot to mention my other concern with HIDs, the buzzing sound they make. I noticed the buzz initially when I installed the lights, but not much since. So I was happy to find that it's not that loud at all. Edit2: another pic after final adjustments: https://dl.dropbox.com/u/71070185/ph...ods/hids/6.jpg |
Mudguards (2/24/13):
finally got to take some pics of the mudguards i installed last week. only part that was a challenge was those damn clips on the underside of the car. i'll find a trick to them someday. i didn't bother drilling holes, just used some double-sided tape as suggested by @abutterman here. that seems to have worked fine. the only one that didn't install flush was the front driverside, but it seems to have fixed itself over the past week, looks great now. it rained a couple of times this week as well and the mudguards definitely helped block some of that kickup. these look and work great and are well worth the $50 you can get them on eBay for. https://dl.dropbox.com/u/71070185/ph...udguards/1.jpg https://dl.dropbox.com/u/71070185/ph...udguards/2.jpg |
Fog Lamps + Bezels (3/3/13):
so i ordered the fog lamps, bezels and wiring harness all on the same day about a week and a half ago. the fog lamps came the next day and the bezels came on friday. i have no idea how long the harness will take as @nigel-jdmparts seems to be out of stock for at least a few weeks. anyways, i couldn't wait for the harness so i installed everything else. https://dl.dropbox.com/u/71070185/ph...ods/fogs/1.jpg https://dl.dropbox.com/u/71070185/ph...ods/fogs/2.jpg https://dl.dropbox.com/u/71070185/ph...ods/fogs/3.jpg install was relatively simple. the old bezels popped out easily. for the screws, i used these 2 pictured below. the top hole for the fog lamp mounting point is actually a little bigger than the bottom one so the combination of these 2 was perfect. i got them both from lowes for about $1.50 each. i used 1/4x20 on top and 10x24 on the bottom. some of the tabs on the bezels aren't popping in easily, but i'll figure that out when i get the wiring harness. https://dl.dropbox.com/u/71070185/ph...ods/fogs/4.jpg |

Sound Tube Noise Suppression (3/9/13):
just a quick and simple mod. found a DIY by @Tech for this and figured it'd be nice to do. it involves simply covering the sound tube's entrance into the cabin, just a little plug that caps it to lessen the amount of noise coming in from the intake. it was about $1.50 for 2 plugs that fit perfectly. could have been a placebo effect, but i did notice it being a little quieter from the engine. it's hard to tell because of my exhaust, but for under $2.00, it doesn't hurt. here's what i used: https://dl.dropbox.com/u/71070185/photos/mods/plug1.JPG https://dl.dropbox.com/u/71070185/photos/mods/plug2.JPG didn't take a picture of the application but it essentially looks like this: http://www.ft86club.com/forums/attac...1&d=1362832384 and just to be clear this minor mod is only for people who don't want to delete the sound tube, but want to suppress the cabin noise and be able to undo the said noise suppression whenever they'd like. |
VG Shark Fin, H11 Fog Light Harness & 35W 6000k DDMTuning HIDs (3/18/13):
got my shark fin today from @86_ZN6 via his groupbuy. paint matches pretty well, quality seems great. i do have a dent in the adhesive strip, but i remember other people just ironed it and it went away so i'm gonna try that when i'm ready to install it. that, however, will have to wait until its warmer and i can clean my car. here are some pics though: http://dl.dropbox.com/u/71070185/photos/mods/fin1.JPG http://dl.dropbox.com/u/71070185/photos/mods/fin2.JPG also i got some 35W 6000k HIDs courtesy of @abutterman who recently upgraded to a limited BRZ and was selling some of the stuff he bought for his FR-S. originally i was considering throwing these in the fog lights (just got my wiring harness from @nigel-jdmparts, here), but i have 5000k in my headlights atm and that'll probably look weird. so i'm thinking about switching the headlights to 6000k and putting 5000k in the fogs. and if that looks weird, i'll just get replacement 6000k bulbs for the fogs. regardless, spare hids are nice to have on hand haha. |
35W 6000k DDMTuning HIDs (3/23/13):
swapped the 5000k HIDs i was running in my headlights for the 6000k i got from @abutterman. unlike the 5000k, these new ones actually fit in the housings and twisted a quarter turn with ease as they should. clearly something was wrong with the ones i had originally because i couldn't get those to twist more than maybe a 16th of a turn. that being said, as a result the cutoff is much better on these. i definitely notice the hint of blue, but i like it. overall i'm enjoying these much more than the 5000k. https://dl.dropbox.com/u/71070185/ph...ods/hids/7.jpg also i found it weird that my phone picked up my old set with a heavy blue color, but these seem to have come up white. strange. |
Car Wash & Axle-back Install (4/7/13):
gave my car a much needed car wash. looks great! https://dl.dropbox.com/u/71070185/ph...s/4-7-13/4.jpg https://dl.dropbox.com/u/71070185/ph...s/4-7-13/3.jpg also a friend and i helped @abutterman install his new Greddy SP Elite Axle-back Exhaust. we grabbed lunch afterwards and parked like asshats: https://dl.dropbox.com/u/71070185/ph...s/4-7-13/1.jpg https://dl.dropbox.com/u/71070185/ph...s/4-7-13/2.jpg |
Grimmspeed Master Cylinder Brace (4/13/13):
bought a used one that @whataboutbob had bought through the groupbuy a little while back, but couldn't use as it wasn't allowed in the SCCA STX rally he's a part of. had a few hiccups with USPS in receiving it, but it came yesterday. installed it today with a friend (about 20min) and i gotta say, you can feel an improvement instantly. the brace is a really nice thing to have. a little while back some guy cut me off on the highway and hit the guy in front of him who stopped short and i slammed on my brakes and truly believed i shoulda came to a stop, but i bumped into him leaving a few scuffs on the front of my car, nothing major thankfully. but since then i started looking into these braces and i finally came upon a good deal. so yea, highly recommend! https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/...7-13/mcb/1.JPG https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/...7-13/mcb/2.JPG |
BRZ E-brake Boot Swap (4/18/13):
@abutterman offered to swap boots since he received his new leather boot from redlinegoods.com. i met up with him and was able to install it today. it's a pretty minor thing but it makes the interior look a lot nicer. i really don't know why the car didn't come like this. Before: https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/...3/ebrake/2.JPG After: https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/...3/ebrake/1.JPG |
Stivo Spoiler & Visual Garage Shark Fin (4/28/13):
spoiler from @WheelDude.com and VG shark fin from @86_ZN6. had a friend help me with the install of these 2 today. install wasn't too bad on either. the fin was cake. the spoiler we used a heat gun to make sure it really conformed to the trunk. so once we had it set we taped it up a bit and layered some bathroom tile on it. came back after about an hour and the majority of it was perfect. there were a couple of edges on the back of the trunk that popped up. so we heated those areas again and held it down for a while. seems to have worked. the spoiler looks great. the color match is a tad off under certain lighting but i love it. love the fin as well. here are some pics: https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/.../4-27-13/1.JPG https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/.../4-27-13/2.JPG https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/.../4-27-13/5.JPG https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/.../4-27-13/6.JPG https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/.../4-27-13/3.JPG https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/.../4-27-13/4.JPG |
Stivo Spoiler 2nd Attempt (5/4/13):
like a handful of others, my spoiler started coming off after my initial install. i did a second install with better tape and with 3M adhesion promoter, but i had to take it off. it started to come up at the edges again. so i think this was partially our poor taping job (we taped a little too far in from the edge, and we kinda rushed it so there's no pics unfortunately). so that brings me to really my 3rd attempt, but my 2nd documented one. this time i was recommended Scotch 20lb Mounting Tape from a friend so we used that (2 rolls at about $10 each from Lowe's, had to cut it in half because it was too wide haha). we just used rubbing alcohol to prep the car with and i plan to leave it overnight with bricks and marble chocks sitting on top of it. we left little gaps in the center of bottom sections to allow any moisture that gets in to escape. also we moved those flat pieces on the top corners back a little bit as suggested by @eikond here. that definitely helped with getting those sections flush. hopefully it looks good tomorrow. pics: http://i.ebayimg.com/t/Scotch-EXTREM...C8Q~~60_57.JPG https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/...dattempt/1.JPG https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/...dattempt/2.JPG https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/...dattempt/3.JPG https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/...dattempt/4.JPG https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/...dattempt/5.JPG https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/...dattempt/6.JPG https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/...dattempt/7.JPG |
Carbon Fiber Key Cover (5/4/13):
saw @R0ME0 selling these in the marketplace and decided to grab one for the hell of it. it's pretty nice. i probably won't use it regularly as it's kinda big, but i'll keep my spare key in it. https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/...keycover/1.JPG https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/...keycover/2.JPG |
Helix JDM Style Clear Side Markers (5/15/13):
got these for a good price through an @86_ZN6 groupbuy. i got amber LEDs for them, but i'm regretting it as they have a yellow base that you can see through the housing. pretty ugly. i didn't take a good picture of that, but i'm ordering some chrome bulbs to replace them. they look great, fit great and took minutes to install. definitely recommend them! https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/.../5-15-13/1.JPG https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/.../5-15-13/2.JPG https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/.../5-15-13/3.JPG |
