Intake pipe

Another alternative to deleting the sound tube and very easy to do. I went to a performance shop I go to and had them fabricate a 3 inch aluminum pipe w/ bung and got silicon connectors and elbow. Total cost was around $65. You can also just run a pipe w/ no bung and install a catch can. Sorry I didnt do a how to but like I said its very easy. I dont know if it adds any hp but it sounds a lot better now. I will probably paint it black and change to black silicon.

Does anyone know if i should bother resetting the ecu?

Silverdub 07-12-2012 11:14 PM

Why would you need to reset the ecu? Btw your breather clamp isnt on. Lpokin good!

arghx7 07-12-2012 11:15 PM

What advantage does this have over the stock pipe?

Probably none but to give more sound

ahausheer 07-12-2012 11:22 PM

Is the MAF reading correctly with that mod? It probably is close enough but if it isn't you can have problems in the long run. Only intake mods for me are from companies that have tested their intake and how it affects MAF readings.

arghx7 07-12-2012 11:29 PM

my concern is that the stock pipe, which is basically plastic, should run cooler than aluminum.

But it's the same stock intake. This just replaces the turbulent stock pipe. How would that affect MAF readings?

This. Or something innovative plus a tune for it.

There's a reason intakes cost more money. There is R&D and testing behind them.

Your MAF and ECU work together to read the volume of air entering the intake manifold. They are calibrated to the dynamics of the stock intake meaning from front to back not just the air scoop behind the bumper. Changing the air tube will change how the air flows and therefore how the MAF reads it.

Basically an 'intake' is more than just the air box it replaces. The piping is part of it. This is basically a one off intake. Without testing to back it up this could be perfectly safe and have no I'll effects or it can be messing significantly with MAF readings and one wouldn't necessarily know.

Edit: I should add that I've got no personal experience in this area and my input here is based off of knowledge and information I've garnered from Google research and technical threads on forums. I may have put the pieces together poorly an could be wrong in my assumptions.

His changes are all after the MAF.

This^

The changes are downstream of the MAF so they should have no effect. It's like a turnstyle at the subway. Once you go through it, they don't care where you go, you've already been counted.

xcelir8brz 07-13-2012 09:01 AM

Very interesting. It looks pretty good. I plan on installing a solid tube almost the way you have it in the next few days.

With your stock setup and now adding this tube and couplers, how does the car sound?

Do you have a K&N filter?

Any growl?

Air pressure doesn't work like that. There are aftermarket intakes that will cause a check engine light if the ECU is not reprogrammed. Ill bet this intake is fine but there is a possibility that the MAF readings are off. The engine can adjust using other sensors but with the complex D4-S and high compression I would personally be concerned. Also the fact that the spark plug change interval is so low tells me you don't want to mess with the air fuel mixture as it already seems like a very sensitive thing. But I am no expert and I am often overly cautious when it comes to stuff like this so don't take my word for it.

ATL BRZ 07-13-2012 10:41 AM

This is exactly what I want. Simple and elegant yet (hopefully) functional and no CEL's or MAF misreadings.

chadz 07-13-2012 10:52 AM

Yes, this is all after the maf. Its the same size as stock and same routing. I like the stock intake and plan on keeping it. Not worried about heat soak because the pipe is so short and the air in there doesnt stay long enough to get hot. Most aftermarket intakes are aluminum. I do plan on adding a apexi filter and getting it tuned. It does growl a bit and I dont know if its a placebo effect but throttle response seems better. I also did the tb coolant bypass but i doubt that does anything.

Those intakes make changes around and before the MAF. This is after the MAF. The only way for energy to travel upstream to disrupt airflow around the MAF would have to be some sort of resonance. But all of the stock resonators are still in place.

MarkRacerX 07-13-2012 12:43 PM

Looks much cleaner! Nice and simple, thanks for sharing!

trueno86power 07-13-2012 12:49 PM

Clean looking! If you can record the sound would be great.

Vracer111 07-14-2012 06:16 PM

I was going to do something similar with 3" silicone brake duct hose as I've done before with my Integra, but you've made me want to try this out; I just ordered the parts to prototype a similar setup. Had to go with 2 different vendors (Silicone Intake Systems and Votion Speed) because the stainless silicone joiner wasn't available from Silicone Intake (out of stock). Total Cost ~ $100 ($21 of that shipping). Once I get it in and assembled I will post pictures and video. Should look really clean with the stainless T-Bolt's, no metal joiner exposed at all, and Silicone Intake's custom Silicone Port System for connection to the stock breather hose.

Wanted to go with blue silicone but they were out of the 3" 90-degree elbows, so black silicone it is...

86design 07-15-2012 01:45 AM

where did you get those hoses ?

looks good :D

chadz 07-15-2012 02:52 PM

Heres a quick clip [ame]http://m.youtube.com/watch?v=2qHtmHYBC8I[/ame]. Car's running good. Drove about 200 miles and no CEL. I got the hoses from ebay. Vracer, looking forward to yor setup. Keep me posted and thanks for the comments.

xcelir8brz 07-15-2012 03:22 PM

Can you make the video public?

chadz 07-15-2012 07:23 PM

Sorry about that. Its public now. Ignore the girl in the background lol. I will try to kake a better vid.

White64Goat 07-15-2012 07:36 PM

A specific list of the vendors on e-Bay from whom you bought all your items from would be especially helpful and what each supplied (part numbers would be a plus too). Thanks

Your set-up looks really nice, clean and hopefully foolproof. (No CEL's etc.)

xcelir8brz 07-15-2012 08:23 PM

Thanks.

Working on a kit of my own. Should have parts by weeks end in which next weekend I'll fabricate at least two variations. I think I should have something together that will rock. R&D baby!

chadz 07-16-2012 02:03 PM

I got the hoses from this vendor. http://myworld.ebay.com/boomautoparts/ but any 3inch 90 degree elbow and coupler will work. You just have to cut it to fit. The pipe, I got done from a local shop Wired in Linden, NJ. Vendors will probably come out soon. I know AVO has one but it still retains the sound tube. Good luck xcelir8. Please post pics and video when you're done

Turbowned 07-16-2012 02:05 PM

Simple, effective, and best of all, inexpensive! Good job :)

Deja vu???? I wonder where I've seen this before? HaHa

G

P.S. advantages, smoother MAF readings, increased throttle response, and the volume is the EXACT same as before you remove the sound generator. On the dyno it makes 3whp...

How do I know? Because I have seen this before LOL

Tainen 07-16-2012 04:07 PM

Nameless did this in metal on my car. It picked up 3whp on the dyno, and the AFRs stayed the same, because it was after the MAF...

And it looks amazing. They did flush welds. I've got the pic if anyone wants it, but my hosting is mostly fried from all the pics in my build thread. hah.

haha. gonna haveto say no. I can't feel 3whp in difference. But every bit helps, eh?

chadz 07-17-2012 10:51 AM

Thanks Tainen. Happy to see that this makes power. Do you have any scans of the dyno? You wont feel the hp but you will definitely feel the better throttle response.

Tainen 07-17-2012 12:07 PM

@Jason@NamelessPerformance has the dyno graphs.

Couldn't see the link on FB. Can you post it somewhere else? I'm interested in the look.

xcelir8brz 07-20-2012 09:59 PM

FYI -

I started on my own intake pipe. Actually two identical ones. I ordered a 3" 16 gauge and a 3" 14 gauge aluminum 12" tube and cut both down to the size I wanted as well as put a hole in the side of it for the stock small intake tube. I polished them both up so paint would adhere and then I painted them both. They're currently in the garage hanging and drying overnight. I put some black heavy duty truck bed liner on them for looks, and I know that stuff is very durable. Tomorrow I should be getting the 90 degree couplers as well as I already have some straight couplers. Once all is dry and I receive those 90 degree couplers, I'll install one onto the car, take some pictures, and post my thoughts. I decided I would do two as I'm sure someone else might be interested and I could use that one for pictures, measurements, blah blah blah to post publicly so for those willing or have the tools and the skills could make one of their own or PM me for other ideas.

Thanks for the inspiration.
