Hi, new here

Hi BRZ/FRS/86 fans.

I am the proud brand new owner of a pearlescent white 2017 Toyota 86. It has 4-cylinder Subaru boxer engine, 200ish hp, 17" chrome wheels, 6-speed manual, HIDs & DRLs, cruise control, purchased at roughly $28K. I picked this car because I like the design and the fact that my previous car was an old beater, so I've never had anything new until now. My career path changed for the better and I could afford something a little more than a used $10K car, but up to $30K.

I'm coming from having no experience with driving stick, but I've gotten better these past few weeks. One thing I have read, and also noticed myself is that the car handles really well, but it's a bit on the slow end for speed and power. I'm starting to feel that. Revving the car up loud, it sounds like its fast, but I'm not going anywhere fast! But that's ok with me, I still love this car.

From a dead stop, too often I have cars coming up on my rear bumper as I'm shifting between 1st, 2nd and then 3rd. By the time I'm in 3rd is only when I get the speed to get distance from the car behind me. This is probably in part of me being a beginner manual driver as well - trying to shift gears quicker and at appropriate revs and preventing stalling. But it somewhat disheartening when a mom in a corolla with kids in the back seat are outgunning me the first few gears from dead stop. I think there is an unspoken rule that if your car looks fast, people expect you to drive fast. Because race car.

So I'm now looking at seeing if there are cheap ways to increase launch power without voiding the warranty. Maybe adding cold air intake, new exhaust (cat-paws exhaust or something that I've heard about?), and dropping a V6 or V8 in replace of the 4-cylinder boxer? I don't really know.

Anyway, I like the car and I think it looks fancy and fits my personality. But mine lacks power on the launch, leaving a little bit to be desired. Once I'm going, it's great. It's just getting it going quickly is my problem so that people aren't on my butt.

Fuck them, they can wait. There's no rule that says you have to accelerate up to the speed limit as quickly as you can.

Drive at your own pace and comfort level, everyone else can eat a dіck.

Keep the car stock for a while and you'll love it more every day. No cat-paws exhaust needed unless you want it to be louder because it won't do anything meaningful for power.

Welcome to the forums!

Hello Lakitu and I'll add my welcome ...... :)

As far as the soccer mom in corolla beating you from a light ..... I wouldn't worry about it ..... her car being first into the intersection will shield you from people running red lights. Besides, what makes the difference ..... there is a good chance you're not both going to the same place anyway ..... ;)

As far as the car's power ...... it's got plenty for average driving ...... besides, you don't have any mountains to climb anyway ...... :D

If you mod your car to go faster ...... you may beat out the soccer mom ...... but the dude in the mustang will still beat you ..... so why mess with the car's engine .....??

This first post by a "new" member hits about 85% of the troll statements out there. It is the whole damned "Can't keep up with traffic" shit all over again. Even nails the whole slower than a Corolla theme.

OP, if for real (I have my doubts) then just learn to drive the thing right. There is no reason in the world that you are actually going so slow that people are backing up behind you.

Clipdat 01-20-2017 03:42 PM

Hahah, I know, I thought troll as well at V6/V8 swap and "cat-paws" exhaust.

I say like the classified rules new members need to hold up a piece of paper next to their face with the date and forum name. Ha!

Lakitu 01-20-2017 04:24 PM

I meant cat-back lol. And the V6/V8 thing, maybe I shouldn't have said that because to be honest I really don't know what I'm talking about. Maybe I won't touch the car at all and learn to adapt to what I have. The car is a blast to drive, so I'll get better and quicker at shifting, maybe that's all I need to not have people so close to my rear bumper at launch. Maybe I'm too gentle on the gas at 1st and 2nd. But totally not trolling lol. Just noob. I have only gotten into learning about cars maybe about 8 months ago, even though I've driven cars for over 20 years. Crazy how you can do something and not know anything about it. Super duper late bloomer here.

Thanks for the warm welcome, guys!

Stay tuned for pictures!

I won't do my face, but I can do a piece of paper with my car in it, with user name and date for sure! :D

Stay tuned, buddy!

It's definitely your driving. Corollas are always blocking my fucking way. Never the other way around

Still waiting. The suspense is killing me!

Ok that is better!
You have no idea how many troll threads read exactly like yours. All it needed to finish it off was to say that the car needs at least 300HP, a Rocket Bunny kit and that MT was the only true sports car and you would have put the troll meter into overdrive.

You scared me!

This, more than anything.
If someone is crawling up your tailpipe, it's their problem, not yours.

To the O.P...

If this is your first manual transmission, you're probaby shifting way to0 early if your goal is to accelerate quickly. I don't know what you drove prior to this car, but chances are pretty good it was quieter; you may not have been aware of what rev-range your engine was in. An automatic transmission does exactly what it sounds like it does; it "automatically" chooses what it feels is the best gear to be in for a specific scenario (light acceleration? cruising? uphill? downhill?). If you step on the gas hard from a stop, an auto car will stay in lower gears longer to aid in more rapid acceleration. If you gingerly step on the gas, it'll shift sooner and gain you better fuel economy.

In your new manual car, YOU get to make those decisions! Folks who call this car "slow" have either never driven a truly slow car, aren't shifting properly for their desired response for the car, or are comparing it to muscle cars or more expensive sports cars (Yeah, it's a generalization.. I know... shoot me). If you want to have some fun (and you're in a situation where you're not going to put anyone around you in danger.. read that clause again, please...), from a stop stay in first gear until you're up around 15mph or so (or more.. I like to get into second a little early.. that seems to be the real power gear in this car), then shift into second and step on it. You'll be at 55 before you know it. I'm guessing at the shift point from first to second; I drive mostly by ear and by feel. If you read enough posts on this forum, you'll read lots of talk about the power band. Once you get above 3500rpm, the car really comes alive. Of course, once you've achieved your goal of getting to your desired speed as quick as possible, shift into an appropriate gear for maintaining that speed efficiently.. probably 6th if you're cruising at 55 and not climbing steep hills.

You DON'T have to slam from one gear to another at the speed of light; that's counter-productive. The momentum will carry your acceleration for a bit while you shift, so take it slow and don't smack your new baby.

Welcome.

I can make a video of my driving, capturing the RPMs with my phone, and the street with my dash cam.

For upshift, I generally do at 3K up to 4K. So like you say, maybe I need to shift earlier when in 1st to 2nd, there is almost no speed gain from dead stop to 3K being 1st, even though the car sounds like its moving fast lol. It's kind of funny, doing all that work, not going anywhere. Is this what people mean by "rice"? Maybe 1st is only to get the car moving, get those wheels pushing, because it has so much power it but there is almost no acceleration until between 2nd and 3rd.
3rd gear is where I get major boost in speed. I'm also somewhat gentle on the pedal, I'm not flooring. I'm gradually pressing the gas, gradually releasing the clutch.

For downshifts, I do at 2K rpm, which puts rpm at 3K~ rpm in the next gear. I noticed something interesting when downshifting that if I don't press the gas, it feels like it doesn't want to take to the new gear in speed when the clutch engages. For lack of better word, it feels and sounds "wrong". So when I tap the gas pedal as the clutch engages, and it takes just fine! No idea what this means.

And for sudden needs to downshift to make a turn I clutch->neutral->break->turn (moving by momentum in neutral), then to accelerate I try to guess at where I can safely pick back up at based on the mph, which comes out around...
@1st: 0-5ph
@2nd: 5-15mph
@3Rd: 15-25mph
@4rd: 25-35mph
@5th: 35-45mph

I don't always turn in neutral though. I keep the gear in gear, break and turn and pray that the car doesn't stall as the mph drop as I break for the turn.

Back in my first week of owning the car, I made some bad mistakes with downshifting. If the gear is too low, the engine revs up high, freaked the hell out of me. (thankfully never redlined). Gear too high and car sounds like he's gurgling low pitch. Gotten better with knowing when to downshift just by looking at the meter.

Another interesting thing I found, I'm not sure if its bad or ok, but when I put the shifter in 2nd from 1st, I can hear the sound of thick metal snapping into place, like a hard "thud". I wonder if people outside my car can hear that sound? It's almost like cracking a neck. Does not always happen though. I once somehow also got the car stuck in a stall loop where it would turn off, then turn back on, then turn off, then back on, car was chugging. I'm still sad that happened, hurt me deep. that was my 2nd week, never happened again. But there was another time where the car stalled, turn off, and somehow recovered. And I stalled once trying to impress from friends. Embarrassing as fuck.

Fun learning process, though. Apparently steep, according to some articles.
