Sony XAV-AX100?

I have been searching all over FT86 Club and Reddit for information on this unit to no avail. Does anyone know if this will fit our cars cleanly?

Fred E 01-13-2017 12:05 PM

Yup fits like a charm, the install is very straightforward following any of the DIYs on the forum for head unit installs.

Nice. So is this basically the best aftermarket unit out there currently?

It seems to have an 80dB signal to noise ratio and they don't publish the frequency response. If you want bells and whistles, I'd say it's a good head unit. If you want good sound quality, it sucks.

armstrom 01-13-2017 06:13 PM

I wish it had support for a SiriusXM tuner. I'm one of those crazy people who actually subscribes and listens to it :) I try to stream it over wifi tethering on my Joying android head unit but 90% of my morning commute is through a cell dead zone so I can't stream it over the internet. Otherwise it would be a perfect head unit for me.

Balls. Guess I'll suffer the stock unit a bit longer.

Is the suction good as sometimes my mats need a clean.

sly 01-13-2017 10:05 PM

It cleans about the same as the factory radio. I would just throw your mats away...

Tuxer 01-23-2017 06:48 PM

Do you have a picture of the unit in your dash? I wonder how cleanly it fits :)

Did you need any aftermarket wires to hook everything together during the install, or is just the head-unit fine?

Thanks

shadoken 01-23-2017 09:17 PM

Is it same size as the stock Toyota Unit? Might be interested in that case.

The website says 178x100. I thought stock size was 200x100.

dlux 01-27-2017 01:40 AM

would love to see a picture

dlux 01-27-2017 02:41 AM

There's actually a customer photo on the Amazon page showing that this unit doesn't fit organically, and will need extra plastic on the sides.

Tuxer 01-27-2017 01:41 PM

great find, thanks. Otherwise the unit looks great, hopefully they'll come out with a 200mm version.

Does anyone know where I can buy dash kits for the 2018 Subaru BRZ?
I have been looking and asking at Crutchfield en Scosche but they don't do it.

I'm also looking to fit the Sony XAV-AX100. The AX200 DVD edition is coming out September 10th but I don't need that..

The current consensus seems to be to get the Canadian trim piece and a Toyota install kit (or 200mm Toyota specific head unit).

mrbbs 08-17-2017 04:12 PM

Thanks for the fast answer!

I have this crap radio unit and side pieces.
The Canadian trim piece look great but the Sony unit is smaller at 178mm.
Maybe I should just order the 2013-2016 BRZ radio inserts..

It blows my mind that no one has made a nice dash piece with a standard double din opening....

The Kenwood DDX916WS and DDX917WS fit this car perfectly with no spacers, but they are kind of pricey and you have to order from out of the US. I love the unit though.

I agree. I was hoping Subaru Japan offered a double-din trim like the GR WRX, but nope.

Spray painted the spacers but looks pretty good to me!

Magnet phone mount is amazing, btw.

Hey buddy could you share what you have to buy in addition to the head unit itself to do the install?

Cheers, Brian

Other than some butt connectors and a USB cable for your phone, you'll need these two items:

Metra 40-LX11
https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0...?ie=UTF8&psc=1

Beat-Sonic BH1
https://www.ebay.com/itm/Beat-Sonic-...item48a47c7762

In case anyone is considering a Sony unit, I want to express one small incompatibility. The backup camera lines on my 2016 US-model BRZ are apparently governed by the stock headunit rather than by the camera itself, so I need to set the Sony ones, but they can't be aligned perfectly.

The XAV-AX series (AX100 in my case) has adjustable parking lines/guides, but they only adjust in width and height. You cannot translate them left and right. Since the stock backup cam is offset by ~12-18" from the centerline of my car, I cannot adjust the Sony's lines appropriately.

Probably not a huge deal to most, but it's really frustrating to me, and something I wish I'd known before purchasing the unit.

Recently this unit had problem of volume up/down and radio scanning automatically. The root cause is the setting of clock time. After turning off this setting, the symptom went away.
