Q300 too quiet! Help!

So I bought a used Q300, looks great and sounds better than stock but it's TOO quiet! Is there anyway to cut out the front muffler on the system? I'm in CA and can't take off the Cat :/ trying to go the legal route, thanks in advance!

I mean, you could. But that would just lead to rasp. Sell it and buy something louder. That is the quietest system next to stock there is.

Try the Miltek or Perrin resonated. Or Tanabe single exit. if looking for rumble and just a little louder.

What kind of sound are you looking for? Tone wise and decible wise

Tjwells225 01-10-2017 02:45 AM

Rumble and something that isn't extremely loud, just when I get on it and start up I'll be able to hear but won't wake the neighbors (every time) haha

How many miles are on it? Keep in mind it will continue to get louder and improve in overall sound as you log more miles on it.

Not sure how many the prev. owner logged (looks like a descent amount due to ware) but it has grown on me a bit and it looks great

I'm gonna stick to my previous options I gave. Non of which are super loud but have a rumble you can hear under throttle and cold start. With the rest of the exhaust system stock it will remain fairly quiet.

If you are dead set on keeping the Q300 instead of cutting it up you might just have an exhaust shop make a new midpipe so as to not ruin your current one in case it still isn't what you want and need to sell it. Would be harder to sell if it is messed with.

And since it is used I would imagine it is entirely broken in by now and not much change will come to it sound wise.

Tjwells225 01-10-2017 03:27 AM

thanks for the advice and opinion man! I'll check out the Perrin options and see where that takes me Sound and cost-wise!

Shop around for a used one. You can usually grab one for under $600. Just make sure it is resonated to avoid rasp

You can also try putting in a High Flow Cat Front Pipe. It will make it sound a little deeper. That would be the cheapest and easiest route.

Q300 is not quiet dude...my greddy sp is quiet...

jasonojordan 01-10-2017 08:28 AM

Invidia N1 is loud but I would not recommend it if you ever plan to change from stock headers. With cat-less headers the N1 is deafening. I traded my N1 for a Q300 for once I do my headers here this spring.

Do you have the Supreme SP or the Elite SP axleback. I am actually thinking about getting the Supreme SP is it really very quiet?

Songha 01-10-2017 10:10 AM

I'm running full catless with the N1. I love it, it is really loud though. I wouldn't recommend it though, i thought just the N1 alone was loud ish.

JazzleSAURUS 01-10-2017 10:19 AM

I have a decatted stock header with an MXP SP catback. It sounds absolutely wonderful, very smooth, and reasonably deep. Very audible but still EDIT: WIFE approved. Pretty when you're hammering, but you can still hear the feedback from the rest of the car. I'm very pleased with the setup.

86Tony 01-10-2017 11:22 AM

add some headers and fp

Clipdat 01-10-2017 11:32 AM

Read.

Sell it and buy a Perrin resonated. Loud at cold start but nice low rumble after than and loud when it needs to be. ;)

Both are quiet. The q300 almost sounds stock on an otherwise stock system

Not legal in CA. OP said they want to stay legal and retain factory cats

Both cats? I understand the one in the header is required, but what about the one in the FP?

You cannot remove or modify ANY factory cat in CA unless it is deemed defective by a certified shop. And then it can only be replaced by a CA approved cat, which means even then high flows are illegal

Blue_Elite 01-10-2017 02:44 PM

Have a look at the Corsa catback. I had one with the stock header/op/fp for a while and it is one of the best sounding catback systems for the 86. Corsa designs very high quality systems and this one is no exception.

Fairly deep and rumbly at low rpm. When you go WOT it has a nice exotic tone to it. Definitely not the cheapest option, but then again, neither is Perrin.

JackieMoon86 01-10-2017 04:04 PM

I have the GReddy Supreme SP and I absolutely love it. Its not obnoxiously loud or raspy and sounds amazing. Has a nice rumble to it as well. You can still hear it inside the cabin and still be able to have normal conversation. I have a video of a coldstart on my IG feed. Username is jcks.frs86.

I have the supreme SP. It is quiet, but I have uel, so I hear rumble louder than exhaust sound.
It has 4.5 inch exhaust tip and looks nice too.

Definitely thinking about the Perrin, it sounds good, probably would go the used route again as it's cheaper and pretty hard to mess up a bolt on exhaust (knock on wood) ... looks like we now have a place to discuss quiet exhausts 😩

If you were in the north east I'd gladly trade you my Injen SES 3" exhaust lol. Sounds great but drones a bit while cruising and I've grown tired of being so loud :(

jasonojordan 01-11-2017 09:22 AM

Namless makes a solid exhaust as well but they are on the spendy end new and hard to find used.

Lunatic 01-11-2017 01:30 PM

Well I hope it's to quiet for me as I'm putting one on tomorrow with the HKS dual resonated front pipe, trying for max quiet with out a cat. I'm also running Top Speed header and over pipe, Catless.

Italocardoso83 01-11-2017 02:01 PM

Invidia n1 catback is loud I would recommended that

EXCellR8 01-12-2017 04:29 PM

I have a catted UEL and uncatted front pipe to the Greddy SP... really quiet and very little rumble. I might look for a different end section this spring. Possible single outlet...

That will likely be extremely loud with 99% of single exits. If you keep your stock front pipe it helps a ton.

I have heard the HKS single exit (with silencer I believe) with an Ace header and it sounded really good. Most others get tin can like and super loud (Greddy RS, Tnaabe single exit, Tomei, etc)

I know I still have the stock front pipe lying around somewhere, but I did just scoop a used UEL so I'll see how that sounds in front of everything else. I'd rather keep the Greddy AB since it's such a nice quality piece, but after the OFT flash you can't hear any rumble. Still just kinda hums along.

My current catted FT86 UEL is not as unequal as most of the non catted manifolds though, so I think that is mostly to blame. Shame, because they did a really nice job on the header; quality is top notch.

whataboutbob 01-17-2017 09:36 PM

You should research this:

EXCellR8 01-17-2017 10:44 PM

That dual exit version looks nicer... but $530 is a bit rough

Yeah,FT86SF does make nice pieces. I would venture to say if the UEl you just picked up is not catted it'll sound fairly nice on the Greddy SP. Hope it works well for you
