No grill front bumper

OK I want to take my grill off my OEM front bumper so I can show my radiator but that bar of styrofoam still shows. How can I get it the way I want without buying a drift bar? Like Birdys below?

Lose the styrofoam then prep and paint the beam brace matte black.

That easy? Thank you! Washing it wouldn't damage it correct?

Damage what exactly? Nothing would get damaged by water that wouldn't have been damaged before.

I'm not sure if you're aware of this, but that grill does not filter out water :P

bcj 12-12-2016 04:55 PM

Does filter out some larger rocks, sticks and birds though.

How often can you afford to replace your rad?

Not often but Id honestly be shocked if a bird managed to get in there.

What he's saying is you leave your radiator exposed to damage if running without a grille.

Many do, many don't feel comfortable doing so. It's YOUR call.

I have had at least 3 birds and a bat stuck in my grill. With out it there could have been damage from any or all of them.
That does not even come close to the damage rocks can do. I am on my 3rd license plate cover! If you spend any time on the highway leave the grill there. If not then you should be fine.

PandaSPUR 12-13-2016 09:53 AM

Makes me wonder about the BRZ grill... its no where near as "mesh" or "full coverage" as the FRS one. A small bird or rocks could fly into my radiator pretty easily :|

The birds in mine weren't a big deal since they just sort of stuck in there. The bat however was very very messy!

For those who have already made this change, can you remove the grill without removing the bumper?

Just kick it really really hard :bellyroll:
In all seriousness, you shouldnt have to, its just clips that go into the bumper should be easy.

I didn't do it this way but I'm thinking you can if you lift the front end high enough to comfortably work and remove the under panels. I think that would allow enough room to get in there to remove the screws and pop out the snaps.

I dremeled the tabs down even on the bumper since I had no plans of reinstalling the grille. Looks a lot cleaner this way.

In before rad damage

Leonardo 12-14-2016 03:30 PM

When you take the grill out, you will see that there are little clip "nubs" that sort of look like teeth. (I guess) Anyway, I was not going to be happy unless I sanded them off and repainted the bumper. So, I reinstalled the grill.

If dremeled off cleanly, painting the bumper will not be required.

I'm pretty anal about my build so trust me when I say it will look fine... lol

Keep the grill! Not worth the damage to radiator/condenser.
If you want more air for cooling, dremel out the top part and get a beatrush bar or drift armor bar.

Nice polishing! So Clean! I have buffed lots of my parts too. Though mine are just stock parts...

Thanks... I also polish a lot of my stock parts. I've done most of everything that is seen through the grille opening. Cheap aesthetic modification.👌

OP... If your 86 is a daily, removing the grille may not be the way to go. However, if it is a daily and you don't drive a lot of highway miles or country back roads I say go for it.

I took the grill and styrofoam out, painted beam flat black. Instead of shaving off the grill tabs left over, I masked and painted them black so you can't even see them. That way the grill can go back on in the future.

Nice car, but please tell me you retrofitted the stock lights to give a proper cutoff for those HID bulbs...

What? No it's not. Cheap headlights that shine in the eyes of drivers coming the other way is always irritating.

Especially irritating when our cars are already low even at stock height. I've noticed that Acura SUVs with those LED headlights always shine rightt into my fucking eyes, and I don't think its the driver's fault.

Why does every thread with one PICTURE of someone with HIDs turn in to that. Its not even the topic at hand.

I've had to pull out TWO birds that managed to get caught in there. Pretty sure I've collected more, but they probably smashed through the end of the underpanels and fell out on their own......

Front grille out. smoothly it went.

At the 2016 round of the WEC Championship at COTA, I was walking across the parking lot and noticed a new Ford GT with a rabbit stuck in its grill. This is Texas and all, but ...
