Next Gen Gt 86 confirmed!

Looks like we might be getting the 2nd generation of the GT 86 in 2018-2019.
There is a possibility of collaboration with Subaru again.

Mim 12-07-2016 06:00 AM

Expected does not mean confirmed! No point getting all excited till an official news release comes via Toyota or Subaru.

The killjoy in me has spoken.

PS.. appreciate you linking the article anyway!

Tcoat 12-07-2016 06:49 AM

Those are all quotes from an article back in 2014. They get rehashed every year about now.

davmandave 12-07-2016 08:12 AM

I don't want a new generation to come out yet. I'm still paying off the one I bought. Everyone can have new ones in about 4 years, when I can afford to get one too.

This makes a lot of sense given the content. The statement quoted below raised red flags when I read it - it seems awfully late in the game at this point to be making very fundamental design and specification decisions and selecting a chief engineer if the car is to be released as a MY 2019:

Quote:

“The GT86 is at the stage where it’s being decided on the next one,” Toyota Europe boss Karl Schlicht revealed. “Then a chief engineer will be assigned and away we go.”

Worstenemy453 12-07-2016 09:54 AM

The RX-9 was "confirmed" also then, until it was killed a couple days ago.

Correct. Don't believe all these articles. The re-fresh model has not been introduced yet in UK and they'll have to wait for Spring 2017!

I'd suggest you find a dictionary and learn what the word confirmed means.

Then delete your account.

I can not find the original motoring.au article that this is extracted from verbatim but did find a 2014 Dutch site that has the basic quotes. The translation is a bit off but the similarities show that this is the same "interview" being "quoted" now.

The Toyota 86 is not a one-off project. Toyota's successor already in the planning, which comes as the current model has gone through its life cycle. That means we have a year or three, four can expect the new GT86. 2017 or 2018 so. The European Vice President of Toyota Europe, Karl Schlicht, has at Motoring.com.au said that Toyota will not again lose its flavor, as 10 years ago when the Celica disappeared never to return. "That's brand image has not helped. We want to have funauto in the range, "said Schlicht. Or the successor to the GT86 will come again in collaboration with Subaru achieved is uncertain. Toyota is now taking the lion's share of the joint production of the GT86 and BRZ itself and calls the business case "difficult" for cars, so for Subaru will be a successor to the BRZ probably not get out. Moreover, now Toyota is working with BMW on a sports car, but that is very different kind of car than the GT86

While looking for the 2014 motoring thing that spawned this I found about 100 sites stating "according to autocar.com the new..." so I don't think it is going away anytime soon!

Clever that they would disguise it as a Seat to throw off the automotive press. (Especially those intrepid sleuths at Motoring.au.)

Celica00 12-07-2016 02:03 PM

Oh boy! I bet it's the AWD, twin-turbo'd, hybrid, sub 30k I've waited patiently for!

I hear the interior is made with seats upholstered in pure unicorn hide, the knobs are real elephant ivory and instead of plastic fittings they went with all adamantium!

Auto journalism is at an all time low. They are nothing more than in-flight entertainment. Vlogs are mostly ridiculous as well. Im happy with my car. Another el header and tune will make me ecstatic.lol

Fixed

If we all stopped sharing and clicking on this shit, they would maybe stop writing it over and over again.

Then the headline would just say "Internet Marketing Study Shows Nobody Cares About the 86 Anymore"

Would Road & Track be considered doing good auto journalism or would this be classified as click bait?

Well, My opinion is that the printed mag is respectable. And that this article would not make the cut and be left on the editor's floor. But, now they print this stuff online... So, yes and yes.

Not click bait, not good auto journalism either. The internet is a series of tubes, jammed to bursting with bullshit and circular references. At some point, Autocar will post an article with the news of the new 86 linking to Autocar as the source, and nobody will notice, especially the author.

Wise 12-08-2016 01:59 AM

I'd wager it will be probably be using a variation of this engine, which means there might not be a manual.

If you believe this source (http://response.jp/article/2016/08/16/280170.html) - word has it that Subaru will be going with 1.5L turbo+hybrid engine, and the STI model will be part of the line-up as well. Debut is anticipated to be October 2019 at the Tokyo Show as a MY 2020 model.

This^. The printed magazines have limited space but a longer timeline to publish so they take far more time in confirming the source and vetting the story. There sites however are in the race to be the first to break "news" so it is a quick look and get it posted. It is sort of sad to see the old school big name publisher fall to clickbait levels but they are sort of forced into it if they want to stay in business.

Yep that looks reliable (even though I can't read it). A few lines of text and about 100 ads and unrelated links.

Just more reporting. Pretty accurate article about opportunities in the marketplace.

Shark_Bait88 12-08-2016 10:17 AM

Autocar is just the UK version of every automotive news source in Australian. None of them ever provide anything worthwhile or credible. Quit reading their stuff.

Very rarely will an automotive news source break something before a manufacturer wants them to. Spy shots, leaked pics, and insider info are 99% contrived by the OEs.
