needed abusive drivers to test a new dogbox trans
Here's the deal peeps, as some of you know I am always working on some new product for this platform. And this time it's a complete dogbox kit for your factory trans. By sometime in Feb 2017 production will start and I should have 3 kits in hand to test. After the testing phase I will offer a group buy one time then they will be retailed by a few selected business here in the states.
Now the three kits coming in Feb. will be discounted as they are testing units and I will need input from the testers on performance and updates such as new ratios you would like. The group buy will be for 20 sets and will have a slight price increase. After that you will have to work with the companies selling them to get a discount if they will do it. I can not release the manufacture's name until full production starts but I can tell you they make full sequential and dogbox transmissions for high end cars and have been around awhile with a stellar rep. Let me know what you think and if you are interested I will provide more info as I get it. |
Is there a horsepower requirement? Is track usage preferred? Right off the bat I thought of Element Tuning; not because they're abusive, but because they're pushing a lot of power and go through 4th gear somewhat frequently during time attack. Phil hasn't been on the forum for a month, but it may be worth reaching out to him for a true heavy duty endurance test.

So, you are looking for abusive drivers ....... ??
If you mean abusive to transmissions ....... this forum is full of them......:D Seriously, good luck with your venture ..... humfrz |
Sounds like you're volunteering your car for me to drive :)

We're not that far from you, have an instrumented, caged car with a customer that loves development, and are located at a test track. Hit us up if you want to talk.
(Edit: BRZ Owner/driver's other track car is a 700whp Viper GTS w/ Emco sequential.) |
PM sent.

What company are you yourself with?
|
Not interested in being the test mule (my car isnt even FI, altho it spends a lot of time at the track), but very much interested in the finished product and that group buy. The tranny is the only thing still acting up in my car right now.

I'm a privateer and am not in a business. I am sponsored by multiple companies but they are not part of this as of now. There is nothing in this for me except being one of the first to get the products and test them. I am paying the same as the other 2 who are chosen. |
Someone just give us a god damn tremec t56 with a damn bell housing, drive shaft, offset shifter kit already! This is over thought and under funded already :(

what price are we talking about here

And yes I have spare transmissions to use for the install so you can keep your car on the road til its done. We can just do a swap when the time comes. I still have a lot details to get locked in.. |

Spencer Fabrication is making a bolt in T5 option if that helps. If you love a T56 Call Mark and ask if his kit will do a T56..... If not, this option should be ready soon..... :w00t: |

Interested but I'm in Australia...

Ya i saw the t5 option but a factory trans is only 300 ftlbs. After paying to upgrade the t5 to a much higher rating, the t56 would of been better. T5 atleast has longer gears but t56 wont eat my wallet in gas.
Now if this kit your offering uses the factory trans with stronger gears and bigger synchros then im also down. ideally handle closer to 400 ftlbs. |
I will be very interested in this. Will send PM too. But some things that would be helpful for us all to know:
1. Potential torque ratings 2. Helical or straight cut gears? Sent from my SM-G920P using Tapatalk |
Are you looking for abusive or just guys that are outside the engineered limits of our trans?

We are not looking to destroy them but rather push the limits of the car. My car makes 700hp and I will be flat foot shifting thru 5th gear on a drag strip and launching the car at 7000rpm. Other things we are looking for are track drivers that shift up and down repeatedly. Then a spirited street driver would be nice. |
Your definition of spirited street driving?
|
What is this fabricator rating these new internals for?
|
I have a turbo car that does lots of spirited canyon driving and occasional track days every few months! I have noticed the transmission acting up once I boosted the car. I hope this becomes a reliable and cost effective solution!!

Unless something has changed a dog box is meant for hard shifting racing.
We found that the dogs got worn out every couple of race weekends and had to pull the trans to change them regularly. To drive on the street or even around the paddock without shaking your teeth loose and offending your ears with gear noises is not easy. Each shift requires jamming the dogs together to engage the gears. The dogs are expendable. If you can rev match perfectly-- ie shift without using the clutch go for it. I would highly suggest getting a ride in a car with a dog box before spending the money on the change untested by yourself. Sometimes called a drivers dream and a mechanic nightmare. |
Keen to see how this progresses. I've been waiting for a dog set to be released.
|
Hell, Something that even holds together and doesn't strip teeth would be nice. I've seen plenty of transmission failures due to hard shifting not entirely related to the gears themselves but bad shifting skills. It's hard to blame all the failures on manufacture alone and not user error.

Interested in seeing how this goes!

Are there any updates on this???
|
I'm curious to know if this ever happened. I have been working on a dog box program with another manufacturer for about 8 months. It finally arrived and it sure is pretty. Assembly is being completed now and it will officially be tested at Mid-Ohio in about a month. If all works out well, I will help arrange for a group buy.
Ratios are not stock, as it was designed for a racing application, using a 4.56 final drive. 3rd and 4th are close to stock ratio. The only gear that is exactly the same is 5th. 1:1. We made an improvement on 6th and it is roughly 0.840 (vs the stock 0.767). So, the car should actually pull in 6th gear. 2nd gear is taller and will be usable with the 4.56 rear end or stock 4.11/4.30. https://s24.postimg.org/det5k9r3p/0430171421.jpg |
It looks good. Can not wait to hear how you do at mid Ohio. I hope this works well we need a good option.
How are the dogs attached to the gears? Machined, pressed, welded? Field replicable? Return for remanufacturing? Second set come with the trans? |

It should be assembled this week and in the car for a run on the dyno, next week. I'll try to get some video of the shifting action. I paired it with an IRP short shifter. I'm interested to see how that works out. |
Just to close the loop on this, the dog box shown above is amazing!! Simply amazing. I could not be happier. It is definitely a racing setup, but it is tough as hell and shifts are incredible. I'll be posting some details about it shortly.
As a note, I paired it with an IRP short shifter. Great combo. |
