"post a picture of our cars and not get likes" hahaha

Tcoat, it looks like your box of 90's is leaking again. You should probably unplug the modem. You know we got high speed internet now, right?

Hey! AOL is the only place that ever sent me a CD to set things up. Can you ICQ me and tell me what I need to do? I will let the wife know you are sending me stuff so she can stay off the phone.

This. To me, the funniest thing about the car scene and social media is all these clowns being more concerned about E-fame and likes than the car that they're actually building. Some of these "builds" are a compete joke and I find it absolutely hilarious that I know people building some really impressive vehicles in relative secrecy while other people are obcessed with getting thousands of likes for their almost stock, stanced turd with a cracked bumper and bacon fenders. All depends on your priorities I suppose.

I just like seeing people with knockoff fender flares get upset when I call them out for hacking up their car and slapping on the cheapest parts that they can find.

I may or may not have had one too many and went on a Facebook rampage and got kicked out of a group when I went a little too hard.

Worst thing I've seen about social media is how buzzfeed / upworthy / nowthis / etc - style infographic videos are the only way a lot of millenial / gen Z are getting their news, just forcefed to them by these media companies. Much of it is just a super-condensed version of the story narrative. The video you @Mr.Impreza linked mostly follows that style but at least is well fleshed out. But seriously, all these videos are just copycat of that style, and its FUCKING ANNOYING.

And the way shit is spread around without any kind of fact checking. Here's a couple examples that I've seen posted by friends who obviously didn't know better:

http://i.imgur.com/7DtevI5.jpg

Or maybe this video that has been spread around by thousands of people:

[ame="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=H_j4ySi3RZY"]A man exposes cereal companies for putting poison in their cereal! - YouTube[/ame]

Believe me I feel bad for sharing these. If you can't see the holes in the argument and are blindly posting shit like this, please just stop.

Another example I'd like to bring up is how media companies (like these MTV News videos below) are feeding you a one sided opinion rather than news:

[ame="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iTrvkqRaYTo"]How Voter ID Laws Explain Structural Racism | Decoded | MTV News - YouTube[/ame]

Again, spot the sentimentalization of a pretty simple topic.

And clickbait titles:

I see it now and then when I'm off exploring parts of the web I don't usually visit. Someone will give and opinion and the counter argument is "Well, what do you expect from a [choose one] Republican, commie, right winger, Democrat". That is, there is no discussion of the opinion or counter argument, just straight to the ad hominem attacks.

Just like here!
I love when I am in a debate (or think I am debating) and I present a couple of paragraphs presenting my side and the response is "Well you post so much you are just a dumb spammer" without as much as one single word refuting what I said. That is usually the stage in the debate where you just give up because you know there is no counterpoint coming.

Well I think it's still important to see where a person is coming from with their argument to properly validate it. For instance a facebook friend of mine posted a blog post / slam piece on Jimmy John (sandwich shop dude) and his trophy hunting in South Africa. Checked the post, and it's a liberal feminist blogger from South Africa... opinion discarded.

Or an Op-ed piece on CNN.com or Fox that displays opinion pieces with factual flaws or leaning bias in the same column of article titles as other real news articles. You have to validate your author (and their history of articles) to determine whether they're being genuine or if they're on a political agenda.

I think the real destruction caused by social media is exactly what's being reinforced here and that it is how brutally effective and addictive the social media echo chamber is and is becoming.

And..

Once fake and propagandist content is masqueraded as real news, then injected into this echo chamber, it becomes a truly frightening power for those of ill-intent to wield. Human beings are a naturally gullible species and this new form of media preys upon that with an unprecedented level of reach and efficacy.

It's even more saddening to know that people can create a fake story which the "real" news network pick it up and run it without any vetting. So now the whole system is then corrupted, nothing is real and fact cease to exist. There is no class on how to use Social media taught in schools, there are lessons from parents to their kids. Everything is ad-hoc at this point as the sheep are being fed to the digital wolves.

Those with half a brain often get disenfranchised because they know that A) the truth exists but is growingly more difficult to find and takes a lot of effort and B) the majority willfully don't care to seek it out.

Those without half a brain continue to believe and soak up the BS that reinforces their already misinformed beliefs. That problem with "belief" is that it's almost impossible to challenge with facts and truth. Once someone has formed a belief, they cling to it (like developing a relationship with an imaginary friend) and the more evidence provided to the contrary of that belief only serves to tighten their grip to it. One might say propaganda, the "misinformation machine" is a type of religion unto itself and its subscribers.

I quit social media years ago. I have witnessed the negatives effects of this with my own friends, family and associates over the last 10 years, at least with those that don't share my level of skepticism.. I can only assume that had I drank from the same well I never would have noticed it. It's not unlike the analogy of the Matrix.

i'm sick and tired of this one bitch on facebook constantly posting about some plexus crap like it's a best thing since sliced bread miracle product

What I've noticed about social media lately is that no one really seems to have original thoughts. Everyone shares videos that they relate to, but no one really posts anything of their own accord. It's one of the reasons that I tend to stay away from Facebook these days. I don't want to just see funny pictures all day, I want to hear about what is going on in my friends' lives while I am away.

The good stuff? Face Book is practically one big bitch session. People post stuff like "FML, have to work this weekend". Or "got no sleep, my kids are sick" "my boss is a d!ck" Then later "got fired today when my boss read my face book."

People don't know how good the have it... Well maybe not the stupid guy that got fired for calling his boss a d!ck.
