accelerating from a dead stop

We all know that this car is lacking a bit of torque, especially at the lower rpm ranges. I especially noticed it today when I pulled up behind an M3 this morning (good thing I didn't pull up next to it haha). As the light turn green, I wanted to see if I can keep up with it without flooring the pedal - definitely not as I watched him take off in front of me, so I concentrated on just staying ahead of the civics and corollas next to me - at least that wasn't too bad.

How do you guys normally accelerate and up-shift to keep up with the quicker cars from a dead stop? I normally up-shift to second really quick (less than 10mph) and throttle a little harder in second for a little longer - is this the wrong technique? Is the best way to accelerate, to throttle hard and up-shift at later rpms?

#87 07-11-2012 09:28 AM

lolwut? If you want more power you need more revs, so why are you shifting up at 10 mph, that's like 2k RPM

I see you are in Queens with raven FRS, I saw a raven FRS on van wyck expressway last week, did you see a silver BRZ next to you?

pr086 07-11-2012 09:39 AM

lol if you want maximum acceleration you take 1st to redline, shift, 2nd to redline, shift, 3rd to redline.... i think you see where i'm going.

86boyAF1 07-11-2012 09:42 AM

Sounds like you were granny shifting and not double clutching like you should. Now me and the mad scientist gotta rip apart the block and replace the piston rings you fried.

Spaceywilly 07-11-2012 09:47 AM

a hair could fall on the gas pedal of an M3 and it would accelerate faster than a BRZ/FRS. If you want to be the stoplight racing champion of your block you bought the wrong car.

do not even bench mark this car against a beemer M3 of pretty much any year.

the game was cancelled and the players quit the team.

like comparing.....uh just dont go there...

jarviz 07-11-2012 10:20 AM

Ah got it, this is my first MT so i'm definitely babying the car...don't want to try anything with it since this is my first new car too. I feel like I'm hurting the engine everytime I go past 4k rpm.

Van Wyck could've been me, didn't notice you though. you should've honked! :burnrubber:

tripjammer 07-11-2012 10:49 AM

I would still take on a BMW M3 on a twisty mountain road in a FR-S or BRZ...

AX_FRS 07-11-2012 10:58 AM

what does double clutching do for speed? Or is that mostly to protect the engine/transmission?

It's a joke quote from a movie. You use it when downshifting (slowing) on old cars with no syncros or if you just want to feel like a boss.

double clutching is what kids used to do when there weren't any synchros

only reason to double clutch now is if your putting a lot of power through a shitty transmission and you want it to last just a little bit longer before it shreds itself, or if your synchros are fried, either way you need a new tranny :D :D

it does not make you faster

I think he was joking. Double clutching is used for smoother downshifts, not upshifts. No need to double clutch when the engine/transmission speed falls naturally into its proper point while up shifting.

Double clutching on down shifts will save wear and tear on your synchros though for sure. Nothing beats the feeling of executing a perfect double clutch and feeling the shifter just glide into your desired gear with zero resistance.

Smooth downshifts are a good thing. I can't think of why they wouldn't be.

Oh how I wish I had enough posts to thank this.

Synack 07-11-2012 12:18 PM

Lol, double clutching is when your tranny is crapped out or crap in the first place and you clutch in from another gear to neutral, and then you clutch in again from neutral to whatever gear you're going to. Usually on downshifts. Had a buddy with a high powered RX-7 one time where he usually just shifted without clutch because somehow it magically worked but he would double clutch in traffic.

Oriental Life 07-11-2012 12:28 PM

When you'll see M3 next time (that's like what, 400+ bhp?), you put one hand on the wheel, elbow on the window, smile, and cruise looking cool.

Why is it have to be about drag races all the time? is it due to inferiority complex? Freud office hours are 10am-5pm, get an appointment :)

Oh, see I always wondered if Vin Diesel know something I didn't.

neutral 07-11-2012 12:49 PM

When I was driving the FR-S (all five days of it), I felt like so much of a badass that I didn't need to win any stoplight races to prove anything.

Chewie4299 07-11-2012 12:54 PM

I believe truck drivers sometimes need to double clutch due to certain types of transmissions. I could be wrong.

I'll rev match on downshifts but I'm not going to double clutch. I feel like it would slow down my gear changes.

Btw... who downshifts in a drag race? You are doing it wrong, ViN Diesel!!

I've heard some crazy stories about modified M3s and twisty roads. They've always ended with having to downshift more due to the brakes heating up too much or other front end problems due to the weight though.

Still fun to listen to

whats with you people and double clutching?? ITS NOT NECESSARY!! Shift like a normal person, its faster and less pointless effort

I wasn't trying to race. I know an M3 will eat the FRS. I doubt he even noticed my car in his rear view mirror. I just wanted to see how much throttle I would need not to lose too much ground without flooring it. Either way, in about 3s he was about 200ft in front of the rest of the crowd so I didn't bother.

Synack 07-11-2012 01:12 PM

After a turbo kit then it might've been even.

BMW M3, AVERAGE COST; $60,000 +.

BRZ/FRS, AVERAGE COST, $25,500 +

JUST LOOK AT HIM AND SAY "NICE RIDE, BUT I'D RATHER HAVE 2 OF THESE"

Is your DANGER TO MANIFOLD indicator on? That sometimes makes your floor pan fall out don't yah know. You racer types should know this stuff.

Lol you could have two of these and one of them with a full Five Axis body/wheel kit and the other with a turbo kit for the price of his one car.

i honestly don't understand what you are trying to say here

you want to know if you can keep up with an M3 that's using part throttle while you are part throttle?

:slap:

4.5-5.0K RPM in the city will get you right to the 35 mph speed limit with some tail wind :) :happy0180:

Oh.. he noticed you for sure, otherwise he would not be in front of everyone else by 200 feet in just 3 seconds. He wants to show who the daddy is in stop light drag race.

FR-S is not the car for this. So now you know. No hard feeling.

Tractor trailer gearboxes don't even have syncros. My father and grandfather went into trucking together and while test driving my old ranger they double clutched out of habit.

It's probably best you didn't push it while you're still new to manual shifting. Once you get used to letting it rev you'll find an ideal range for accelerating. Enjoy your car, Jarviz.
