Chime while driving? [Help]

Hi everyone,

Not sure what to make of this one, but as I was driving today (mostly on the highway) to help my friend pick up his car from the dealership, every 5 mins or so there was a chime coming from the car while we were in motion at different speeds. It sounded like it was coming from the head unit.

The sound itself is the same audible chime/chirp that you hear when you lock the car.

I originally thought it would go away after I restart the car on the way back (we were at the dealership for an hour). It wasn't my music or phone either since I turned off the bluetooth and audio altogether with no luck.

Any suggestions on this would be a great help as these "chirps" are starting to annoy me.

I know it goes off when you don't have your seat belt on

Did you lend your car to a percussionist recently? Check your back seat or trunk for something like this....

One of these. Both should have a light on the dash as well though.
Only other would be something weird with the HU in which case I would just unhook the battery for a minute and see if it goes away.

Are you leaving something heavy or your cell phone on the passenger seat? Either will activate the passenger side airbag and make the seat belt chime go off.

Errrr didn't realize you had a friend in the car. Did they have their seat belt on?

Weight has nothing to do with what is on the passenger seat. The system is activated by Electrostatic Capacitance Sensor not a weight triggered switch. You could put a 200 pound chunk of steel there and it wouldn't go off but a single tomato set in the right place would trigger it.

hmmm would liquids make it go off then? I always have an issue with mine going off from either gallons of milk or 12 packs of Corona :D

It happens at any RPM really. Was happening again on my way to work this morning. Seatbelt on, nothing on the passenger seat.

I'll have Subaru take a look at this, I need to bring her in for the 6 month overall service anyway. Just need to live with the annoying sound for now.

When my friend was with me we both had seatbelts on. Happened again this morning with just me in the car and nothing/no one in the passenger seat.

No dash lights with it? Like I said unhook your battery for a couple of minutes and then hook it back up. It may reset whatever is dinging.

No dash lights, just the dinging. I'll unhook the battery later tonight when I get home and see if that works. Thanks for the tip.

Hope it works. That would drive me nuts!

If you take it to the dealer, report back. Now I'm super curious.

Don't try to unhook the battery until you are stopped though.

I'm gathering you're in the passenger seat with incontinence or a small bladder. Wait until you get home or bring along a urinal.

HyE 11-29-2016 02:34 PM

Update:

Unhooked the battery for about 5 mins and then let the car idle for about 15 mins after reconnecting. Chime was gone.

I have the car at service right now and did mention the chime to the service rep. He's going to try to replicate it to find out what it was. Will keep you guys posted.

Thanks for the help.
