Bringing home parts from Japan

What determines what you can and can't bring home for personal use? Price cut off? Air freshener versus LED DRL versus putting a set of coilovers in your checked luggage?

Trust86 10-29-2016 02:06 AM

Not sure, but if it helps I brought a steering wheel and my defi gauges in my carry on.

You can always wear the parts with the hope that customs don't notice..

Sorry for not searching. Just saw HKS parts 25 percent off at superautobacs. Hard to use forum on smartphone

I've been using my phone for damn near two years on here and had no
Problems searching. In fact when I search anything car related in
Google ft86club is the first link that pops up!

Normally, you must declare, at customs, anything over $450.00 in value- that also means several items adding up to that amount.

You may or may not have to pay duty on anything over $450.00, but you do have to declare it on arrival.

funwheeldrive 11-02-2016 12:52 PM

Pick me up an 86 airbag cover OP. I'll pay you back. :bellyroll:

Shinigami301 11-02-2016 12:54 PM

Good luck getting one of those onto an airplane... the pyro charge might be a problem!

Ashikabi 11-04-2016 09:52 AM

If you mean bring home in luggage, probably size and weight. And Airbags will be a no go on an airplane. No other parts are prohibited specifically afaik. You probably have to declare expensive parts but I don't see a problem otherwise

You can buy anything you want, but if you buy it in Japan you are subject to consumption tax, which is around 8%. The rest is how much you can bring back luggage-wise.

You want to check coilovers? Sure, just don't forget luggage and fees.

Depends on OP and their experience with traveling. I have no problems carrying personal goods that I bought into the US, as long as I declare it properly (undervalued). Having Global Entry helps too, because there are no forms to fill out.

With the exchange rate today, it's really not that big of a price difference.

All made in US and some are not even authorized.

Use incognito mode if you want to search without your own browsing history affecting the results.

Nearly every major chain (such as Super Autobacs) will do the purchase as tax-free if you have your passport when you make the purchase, and are on a 90-day entry stamp.

Not all of them, actually.

There's restrictions and some actually require you to pay for the consumption tax, then process a refund.

I've done this way too many times..

I just had the horrible thought that we all just assumed he meant car parts!

Interesting. I didnt think any were authorized. Do you know which ones are? I tend to be rough on wallets so I have a couple I rotate and would be nice to add a Bride one that is legit. I thought they were all unauthorized or knockoffs so didnt look twice

Look for the most outrageously expensive one. It's real

Bride were not, but some makers used genuine Bride seat fabric to make wallets. I knew a few of those sellers but they stopped after the fake ones came out and no one can tell who was what. Fabric can be purchased individually: https://www.more-japan.com/bride-fab...tegory_id=1727

Takata were. Formula Drift special versions, all were made by Harvey's. I have one.

-alex

Edit: if you wanted to have a Bride wallet made I guess you can see if Harvey's or someone else can modify an existing wallet with Bride fabric...

Apex-Apex 11-05-2016 04:16 PM

I brought back a few seats last time as check in. As far as the tax goes, there's a counter at the airport that'll help with refunds. However, you have to note that there's a minimum you have to spend per transaction to qualify.
