Why not 300+ hp?
I keep reading about 200-250hp which isn't bad for it's weight but it is still pretty slow compared to other rwd cars. At best (w/250hp) the weight to power will be about 10.8lbs/1hp. Right now the 5.0 is less then 9lbs per hp. I would assume a 250hp FT-86 is good for lows 14s and low 15s with a 200hp engine. I personally think they should use a new Subaru engine with about 300hp and that doesn't break with simple mods like the current STI engine.
Let's hear your thoughts... |
Simply put?
This isn't a Lexus. More detail - Toyota wants to make a performance/sporty car at a low price and get people into the Toyota brand (eventually move up to Lexus) and go back to their history. Lexus is a premium/luxury brand. Where their cheapest car can be like in the low 30's at the most. |
Cheap, Fast, Reliable.
Pick Two. BTW, this car was designed to be inexpensive and since it is a Toyota/Subaru, I would assume it will be reliable. That's why. |
I can't believe people think a RWD turbocharged sport coupe will have to cost over 30k when a AWD, 2.5l turbo WRX exist at 26k OTD. And this car is built on the same platform.

because straight line speed is not what this car is about.

Why noobs go here not read just make a topic that we already talked about 100x? |

If you want a car with 300+ hp, there are many options for that. This is trying to find its own spot. |

This topic has been discussed in not only other threads, but in practically every single thread on this forum. It's always brought up, even in threads where it is off-topic, and the bottom line answer is what the above users said. |

Its getting to the point where I can't tell if people are trolling or legitimately asking this same old tired and stupid question.

Edit: Just realised you may be talking about the WRX(47k RRP) im referring to the STi |

To be honest I just got tired of this question and acted like an asshole. I regret nothing. |
If GM can get 300hp (with GM tune) out of their Cobalt SS LNF engine, I don't see why Subura couldn't in a cost effective way with the FT-86. Driving on a road course is certainly more fun then a drag strip, but even that is more fun with more power!
If they are going to be offering several versions of this car why not have different engine options as well? Also, if this has been talked about 100x why are you still logging on? No one knows anything more about this car then what has already been discussed. Everything is pretty much speculation. |
300 seems like its very achievable after mods and tuning. people need to stop complaining.
|
My car won't be stock. So it'll be fine.
|
Do you think Miatas should have 300hp as well? Because this car will be more Miata and less Mustang 5.0.
|
Lmao, it was nothing to do with whats more like the next.
Lightweight cars with alot of horsepower tend to be fun ass hell, period. Some guys want N/A, some want a turbo. Toyota/Subie would be smart to offer both. |
Jesus Christ....again?
:sm3: |
Like someone said, what else do we have to talk about until 4-20? You don't have to click on the thread if you don't want.
Plus this thread gives a place for people to talk about it instead of cluttering all the other threads with it. :) |
So why not 400+ hp instead? I heard from somewhere that some model of Mitsubishi Evo have over 400 hp. I am sure that Toyota+Subaru > Mitsubishi so their sport car should more powerful than one from Mitsubishi, Right?

Now put the joke on the side, why do you think JDM Supra, R32~34, NSX, & few other sports car had a limited 280hp? Recent yrs, Japanese auto industry have been going crazy and putting out over 280hp cars out, but there's ridiculous amount of fee gotta pay to have over 280hp stock cars annually. If this car push over 280hp, I can guarantee you this car will put into Z, STI, Evo price range... now why you wanna bring dying high hp cars genre? |

Yes but have you seen the Cobalt SS Also the Cobalt will only make 300 after a tune while you have no clue what the ft86 will make after a tune as well (doubtfully 300 with no turbo but you cant compare tune to stock either way) Cobalt also comes with a 5 speed and I deff want a 6 speed. The power to weight of a stock Cobalt SS is 11.3 which is worst than the 10.8 you complained about. comparing one good trait of a car isnt going to help you here. Can the Cobalt engine make more power with a tune? Yes, but what engine cant Is the Cobalt a better package than the FT86 based off speculated info? Not by a long shot I will say it again this car isnt built with drag in mind. Its all about the track and winding roads with this one. The FT86 isnt trying to be the powerhouse car but a revival of the simply joy of driving Quote:

I don't know about anyone else, but mine will be 300+ at minimum.

I will be happy if I can bolt on and tune it to 200hp at the wheels. |

Thank god for living in TN..:) I probably hit up PTuning and have them fab me up a turbo kit from day 1. 300-350, meh don't matter...hell I'll even do 400whp if the engine is good for it. Don't get why everyone so bent up on having minimal hp just because of what the car was meant to do. Truth be told, the car is meant to do whatever it is YOU want it to do. You want to drag, street race, road race, autox....who cares. More power is not taboo. That's why you address the rest of the car to handle that hp increase (wider rubber, softer compound tires, suspension, LSD...etc.) |

Anyway, the fact that Best Car is spreading rumors about a 250 and 308 hp version is interesting.
I guess some folks in Japan just don't understand that this car should be dog slow in a straight line and powering out of corners :D Hard top Miata -- got it ;) |

Lastly, Why older GT-R, NSX, Supra, FD, STi, Z, Evo, had a same HP numbers even tho some had more cylinders & liters? |
HP arguments....its like bickering who's dong is bigger.
Power is easily (if not hindered by monetary restraints) gained. Overall car feel, balance, and general fun factor is something much harder to obtain if the car is a pos from the dealership and poorly engineered. Don't you worry you little power mongers, you'll get your bolt on turbos, and whooosshing BoVs, and nitrous, and a computer that tells you manifold malfunction in your passenger side floorboard that you can yell "Shut up!" to as you slap it shut, and all the other things that make you wet your pants. /pat on the head |
