Cricket fix finally available?

My friend received an e-mail today from our local dealership advising that there is a fix for the "crickets" now. Anyone else receive this communication, and does anyone know if this new "fix" actually resolves the noise?

ichitaka05 09-29-2016 07:57 PM

way1, that's strike 1.

OP, answer is technically "no".

If your friend's dealership is anything like the one I use, they're just trying to sell him a new Legacy Premium.

What go with Legacy Limited ;) jk

The actual e-mail reads;

Quote:

ATTN: 2013 - 2016 Subaru BRZ Owners

If your vehicle suffers from*a high-pitched "chirp", "squeak" or "cricket" sound heard coming from the vehicle's engine at idle there is now a repair available to address this concern. We recommend bringing your vehicle in for us to see if this repair applies to your*vehicle.

If your vehicle is eligible for this repair,*the repair may be covered by one of the following warranties;*Basic New Car Limited Warranty (3 years, 36,000 miles), Powertrain Warranty (5 years, 60,000 miles) or any active Subaru Added Security Powertrain, Classic or Gold extended warranty policies.

While my response was in jest, the intent was sincere. There isn't a fix from Subaru/Toyota that we know about, and I recall reports of crickets from '17s with a slightly different pump (at least the top of the casing). While there very well could be something I'm missing, I would say this is most likely a dealership trying to drive up warranty work for some reason, or trying to get owners in the door to sell them something new (e.g. WRX, or I keep getting emails to trade "up" to a Legacy. Seriously).

Yeah and I was almost not going to post this, because I know the topic has been beaten to death. Was curious though if anyone else got the same e-mail or not.

Off-Topic section, it might of been borderline safe, but here... it was out

Jakinit 09-29-2016 10:04 PM

Are you guys sure? The '17s have new fuel pumps and I read somewhere that these were going to be made available for '16s.

Normally I would be in the "Go post in an existing thread" crowd but this is a little different. Although we have not heard of anything recently someday, somebody, may actually be right. It may be worthwhile to at least go and talk to them and see what the date on the TSB is. So far it seems that all previous TSBs have been revoked but if this one is dated recently there may (a remote 'may') be something in it.

Or, it could be just another dealer semi scam email intended to get you in the door where you will see a shiny new 17, they make you an offer you can't refuse and they make a sale!

And if it IS just a ploy to get you in the door and into a '17, then maybe that means the updated pump in the 17s DO have a fix for the cricket issue. And then we can work on getting ours swapped out for those!

I am not convinced that the new pump is backwards compatible to our cars.

Dealer might just be slow right now. And if there's an enthusiast/owner who works in parts or service, they may have said hey, email all these guys, and we'll do warranty claims.

Get's revenue for the ddealer and the client isn't paying.

BRZnut 09-29-2016 11:34 PM

Haven't received any notice like that here. If you have the time, please go and see what the dealer has in mind. Then report back!

So one thing i've noticed is i've been running primarily Chevron with Techron 91 and every since i've gove through about 2 tanks (to get rid of all the 76 i've been using) i havnt experienced crickets for about two weeks when i used to get them every other day (depending on heat).

Yal 10-02-2016 11:28 PM

I just checked All Data for TSBs for the Scion and Subarus for 2016 and 2014 models and I don't see a TSB for this. If I get a little more time, I'll check all years.

Just checked, found one for crickets in the 13-14 MY. Replace the fuel pump, but from what I've read, that doesn't work.

shellslinger 10-02-2016 11:33 PM

I haven't had crickets for the past 20k miles. I always run 91 Shell at my local gas station.

Yal 10-02-2016 11:41 PM

I run Shell 91, maybe I'll try the Techron route.

The 17's have barely been available for a couple of months. About 5-6 weeks in the USA. Where are you hearing/reading these reports? Mine's at ~1400 miles driving it every single day, and so far, so good. Most people, from what I've read, didn't get the crickets on their 13-16's until at least a few thousand miles in, no?

It just doesn't seem like there are many out there right now, and even less that would've been driven enough to start getting the crickets?

Trueweltall 10-03-2016 04:13 AM

I almost always run Shell 93 V-Power, a couple of times I filled up with Walmart 92 and I heard the chirping noise. It's a really annoying sound.

I got my crickets within 300 miles...

Fuel pump in the '17 MY was first used in the later '16s. There are already some conflicting reports, but you never know. I wouldn't keep my hopes up.

It took about 2000 miles before I first noticed crickets in my car. Now, 28,000 miles later, either I've tuned them out or never notice. Easily fixed by turning up the radio, and I consider the aversion to fast food drive thrus a health benefit.

Great. Now PETA is going to come after us for all these threads of people wanting to get rid of the crickets. BRZ/86 production will now be killed off after gen 1 due to protests going nuts

I'm guessing some people haven't seen this thread? Mine is getting replaced for free in March.

Others seem to have good success with the new pump.
