The Time has come, The Zaku Story

Quote:

Hey everyone How are ya? I'm very excited about the 86, and very interested in the Subaru's version. I'm liking everything but the zippers things in the inside. LOL
The quote above is my introduction from 2009, I joined 4 days after the forums started and as of this moment I am actually the oldest member in terms of longevity on this forum, no one else from that time is still around except for the Owner Hachiroku, even the Staffs joined after me.
In this the 8 years I have spent on this forums, I've bought media, information and participated in Three 86 Expo all three I help staff in. Whenever there was a media event for the cars I was there to help coverage for the forums and over the years I have been humbled and earn the trust of many members, community, manufacturer employee many whom I considered friends and some family. Had the chance to interview engineers, the pleasure to meet Tada-San and Moto-san and many many more people I'm glad I had the chance to meet.

This platform helped me launch my career in the automotive industry, many of you know what I do for a living. But I like to think of myself as another member. But I guess at this point I am probably one of the handful and oldest Original Generation member from 2009 remaining.

However, there was one thing I did not do over the 8 years... and that was own the experience.

Well that ended today.

Today I am an Owner of a 2017 Subaru BRZ Limited : )

Hahaha no I live in a modest size room, that's a house in a neighborhood where my boss lives. Which is funny cause that house is an average of what's in that neighborhood, I believe there's a castle somewhere around there. Literally a castle.

gramicci101 09-23-2016 02:38 AM

Ha, it's about time!

Also, kudos for picking the better of the two.

Congrats.

DarkSunrise 09-23-2016 08:41 AM

Congrats! On this refresh I like the BRZ front bumper more than the 86's. Looks good. Clear sidemarker perhaps?

deejaylew 09-23-2016 09:04 AM

Alas you are forced to give your story to the masses! So you went with the white, I'm jealous as you know I had to re-order mine and I wont be seeing it until dec-jan. = [

Futaba 09-23-2016 09:41 AM

Congrats! now start pulling it apart and nailing things on!

Yeah, the story was I ordered a Silver, but then they ordered me a wrong transmission. It came in Automatic, and they offered up this white instead. I would cancel and get PP like you, but at the price and deal I was getting it wasn't worth it. I also still have the s2000 in case I ever want to track it's already ready.

I actually like the Orange! I might change it later, I also want the JDM fang lights.

first mod might be an armrest, the GF is complaining about not having one.

Can't decide if I want the Scion sliding or GT86OEM or just something from ebay.

funwheeldrive 09-23-2016 02:40 PM

Congrats on the car! Glad to see you finally picked it up.

OEM GT86 for sure! The sliding Scion one feels like an afterthought.

RJasonKlein 09-23-2016 03:07 PM

Congratulations on your purchase - it's a great looking car. You have a very cool story and I'm really happy for you to finally be a participant, and not just a spectator!

Best of luck to you and keep us posted on your ownership experience.

Do you have it on your car? How do you like the sliding one?

Yeah I prolly will get the Oem but want thoughts on the sliding one. They are thread on it but just people installing it not how they feel about it.

I played with the sliding one at the San Fransisco international car show last year. It functions well and gets the job done, but also looks very bulky and mismatched with the rest of the interior.

I see I've been getting a lot of people telling me that the sliding mechanism goes bad faster than the latches for the GT86 one. My only gripe is that it opens to the passenger side when you wanna use the cup holders. Guess I'll just bottle everything :) thanks for the insight.

Congrats Zaku. My turn may come up really soon.

I often do circuit cross, so it will definitely see the track in the future. I don't plan on doing anything too serious at the moment but will do more closer to next year. I still have my other car and that is already good for the track. Then again I might even drive much of either considering the traveling schedule I have coming up for work.

I chuckled when reading your story since my experience was pretty much the total opposite. I barely even knew the car was being developed much less that it was actually being made. Stumbled on it while killing time next door to the Scion dealer. Looked it over in the showroom and said "wrap it up I will take it". I had only known they even existed for a whole 1/2 hour when I put down my deposit. I can't even imagine following it for 7 years before actually getting one.

Mr.Impreza 09-24-2016 12:12 AM

So you plan to keep it stock or?

Probably for alittle while, maybe add some factory parts.

I don't have major plans for anything yet, so far just things like an armrest maybe a shift knob/lockout I don't think the plastic piece looks good with the upgraded interior.

bcj 09-24-2016 01:22 AM

Props.

Nine inch nails. All over.
Frankenstein bolts for Halloween.

Jordan Silveira 09-24-2016 06:13 AM

Just figured I'd give my thoughts since I installed my Scion sliding armrest recently and I love it! I think the OEM GT86 one looks great when laying down but personally I use the center console/cup holder very frequently so having it sit up while having drinks seemed completely silly and actually like a bad design. Whereas the Scion armrest is the best of both worlds serving form and function. I get my armrest out of it and can still maintain one cup being in the cup holder. Alternatively, if I need both cup holder slots or just want full access to the center console I slide it all the way back. It honestly is the best of both worlds.

did you have to drill like the OEM 86 arm rest? and also do you think the sliding armrest is too high? I actually like the level it is now behind the hand brake, and feel like it would be too high. if you don't mind could you share some pictures? thanks!

No problem I will try and capture some when I can. Natural light would probably be better. Drilling and riveting is needed to install the housing and track. As far as the height I think its perfectly fine in relation to the shifter. I shift regularly with it in place. Believe me the height was a concern I had but I love it. It's become one of my favorite mods thus far. Just nicer to have that then always rest my hand to elbow on the hand brake.

Allch Chcar 09-26-2016 12:49 AM

One of the OG members of the BRZerhood finally bought a BRZ. It's about time! :P Congratulations!

Thanks I really appreciate it! It will literally become first mod I'm sure.

And thanks everyone for the nice replies. Will try not to disappoint anyone with this build hahaha.

Sorry been incredibly busy today and haven't forgotten. You can however go to my build thread on my sig. It should contain a decent picture of the height.

I think that Japanese have a different way of thinking. Not the consumer lifestyle of the Western countries. At least the ones that want to stay close to tradition. They might wait years and years to mature something. Additionally, they will keep a car much longer than usual and not throw it away because a new model appeared. I've seen some aftermarket companies in Japan still evolve the S2k, although production has stopped a long time ago.

Rubbish 09-30-2016 12:31 PM

Congrats on the 2017, i prefer the brz front end more than the 86

But wine sometimes turns to vinegar!

I am the moonshine. Just showed up and people enjoy me at first but then wake up with a headache the next day.

I heard the next gen will be AWD, maybe with a turbo option.

Once you get some miles on your car, I've found a few low cost mods that I think really improve the feel of the manual transmission. I did all of these at the same time that I put better fluid in, and the improvement was dramatic.

Whiteline transmission bushing insert keeps the transmission from flopping around.
Whiteline diff carrier bushing inserts keep the diff from flopping around. The OEM bushings are really soft and the diff moves a lot under hard shifts. These minimize that movement.
MTEC shift springs give the shifter a stronger return to center.
Rear shifter bushing I'm sure does something useful.

Nono, it will be a Synergy hybrid with an electric plug in option. :D

I remember all the speculation and rumormills too. It got to the point where mentioning "AWD and turbo option" was considered trolling. But then when I made an account I said I would be fine if it made 140BHP if the curb weight was low enough and people yelled at me for weeks.:bonk:
