FRS/BRZ vs Genesis Coupe 2.0T

Hi everyone
My friend ask me to help him ask following questions
1, He is looking for a car to Touge, and he will sell his current Altima to buy it. Thus, that Touge car must also serve as his DD. He really want to know if these two cars are good DD.
2, He planed to spend 8K on his Touge car, that give him only one option: buy FRS/BRZ or Genesis Coupe with salvage title. Are cars with salvage title generally bad?
3, Which one of the two (FRS/BRZ or Genesis Coupe) is a overall superior car?

guybo 09-13-2016 09:18 PM

I chose to get a FRS to replace my gencoupe 2.0 and I have no regrets.

KR-S 09-13-2016 09:37 PM

1. Miata.
2. Miata.
3. Miata.

Mr.ac 09-13-2016 10:31 PM

SoCal and touge car? Are you 15?

Jokes aside $8k for a salvage car.... That's a money pit. You'll have a huge gamble just hoping you don't get a junker. Unless you know exactly why it's salvage don't get it.

As far as the cars go, I wouldn't get the Genesis with out a V6. The small 2.0, is fine but not worth it in a heavy ass car.

As KR-S 86 said get a Miata. For $8k you could find one for DD and goofing around.

What is a touge car?

Japanese for a Drift car, or as traditionally known as a down hill drift car.
That's why I joked about his age. Cause kids like that kind of lingo.

It's from those chinese cartoons I think...

In all seriousness OP, it will be a headache, don't do it imo.

$8k will get you a kickass Miata, some fantastic tires and brakes, freshened suspension, and every maintenance item you'll need for the first year or two, bar none one of the best handling production vehicle you can get your hands on regardless of price, the true dagumi-mobile for the U.S. teen. Alternatively I'd look at MR2s, 90's & 00's Hondas (Civic, Integra, Prelude, RSX), maybe Celica. I'd suggest Integra due to price, parts availability, and practicality for a kid.

If you're super ambitious an RX-8 or E30/E36/Z3 BMW would be pretty kickass, but you'll spend about $5k on the car and another $5k on repairs in the first two years if you DIY fix a car that's priced that low.

reni 09-14-2016 01:09 AM

so you're asking if people on an 86 forum prefer the 86? :bonk:

hmdqyg 09-14-2016 01:14 AM

He is 22 or maybe 23 this year. In fact, I once mentioned Miata before but he refused because Miata has under 200HP and has only two seats. He said he will sell his Altima for about 13K (Let's assume he can actually sell it at this price), but he want to save 5K to spend on mods so that leaves him 8k on buying the car.

Both of you will need to realize that the $5K that he would spend on mods would instead be spent fixing up a broken car.

I would rather suggest keeping the Altima and saving another $10K and buy a used Gen or twin, whichever he wants.

8k. Perfect.

Summerwolf 09-14-2016 09:20 AM

Wouldn't buy either actually. 8K? Find an old FC or Miata or maybe even an RX-8 or something worth the budget.

guybo 09-14-2016 09:29 AM

The main problem with a Gen for this is that the brakes (even the Brembos) are really bad.

As for 2.0 vs 3.8, for the same money you can buy a 2.0 and with the difference in price between the 3.8, put that amount into mods and the 2.0 will be a faster and better handling car. With terrible brakes.

Plus the Gen tranny is just as infamous as the brakes. The dual mass flywheel is awkward at best

DarkSunrise 09-14-2016 09:30 AM

What is Touge? Is that backroad/canyon racing? Or an actual drift/track event?

Japanese term for "mountain pass."

The socal equivalent would be canyon cruises? If so, agree with the NA/NB Miata suggestions.

If it's actually "racing" someone through canyons, get something with better rollover/crash protection. Miata is not the car you want to fly off a canyon in. Or better yet head to a track.

Not entirely sure how the kid is trying to use the term. I'm sure it is some kind of spirited canyon carving like Matt Farrah does?

LOL

The first time I saw that word, all I could think was, "WTF is a 'tooj'?" Then, a little while later (like a few months), I kept hearing "the kids" saying. "tow-gay". So, again, "WTF is a 'tow-gay'?" A little while later (again, about a few months), I finally put the two together, "Ohhhhh... 'toe-geh' as in the Japanese word, "峠 = とうげ = mountain pass".

I had to LOL at myself because it reminded me of the JDM word photographers now use about which I went through the same confused thought process: "bokeh" meaning blurred or softness. People around me kept talking about, "bow-kay". And all I could think was, "WTF do flowers have to do with lens sharpness??"...

hmdqyg 09-14-2016 02:34 PM

I warned him that buying a salvage car is risky, but he is always a lucky man and he want to rely on luck this time. He actually found one with clean title for 11k but he think he can have some good luck on a salvage. We do not racing each other but is overall a fast canyon driving, might faster than Matt.

JD001 09-14-2016 03:30 PM

Genesis is a 2 star car.
The Twins are 4.5 to 5 star car.

Enough said!

Ask your "friend" just to save up to buy decent car.
Another option is to buy an old rwd car for cheap, and fix it up.
It can be an old '90's m3 with engine problems for like $3-4k but with a clean title then use the rest to bring it back to life and upgrades.

krayzie 09-15-2016 11:21 PM

Your friend wants a Tofu car not a Touge car.

Burrcold 09-16-2016 01:14 AM

I've owned a Genesis Coupe and a twin and there is seriously nothing that would make your friend happier if he chose the Genesis Coupe.

I told him the same thing, but it is hard to change his mind.

If your friend is like most of the Altima drivers I've come across, don't bother.
He'll only be focused on two numbers: 200 vs 274.

This might be true since he refused buying a Miata because horsepower

This answer really is subjective. All depends on what you favour in terms of looks/interior/differences in things like steering feel etc.

Most on this forum are 86/BRZ/FR-s owner (like me), so my opinion might be biased, but 3 years later and I still love my car. Driving it is still lots of fun, and I only own 1 car.

I think it's down to the magic ratio 'power to weight'..

hmdqyg 09-21-2016 07:17 PM

I was surprised that most of people here didn't know "Touge" because FRS/BRZ is really good at it.

hmdqyg 11-16-2016 07:43 PM

For some reason, he decided to buy a Audi A5 or Genesis Coupe 3.8 next fall

guybo 11-16-2016 10:05 PM

I did my first autoX with the FRS. I had done one with the GenCoupe and that was not a good car for it. But the FRS.... wow, this car is awesome. I'm loving it more everyday, it is just a better car.

Yardjass 11-16-2016 11:30 PM

I just wouldn't buy a Hyundai because they're junk.

Tokay444 11-17-2016 12:04 AM

Anyone who actually asks this question deserves a Genesis Poop.

Their price is lower than most cars with the same power. Which gives them higher hp/$ ratio. But everything else is bad.

guybo 04-03-2017 07:53 PM

The big problem with the Gencoupe will be the brakes in a touge. I've never done one but I've seen videos and a downhill run like that will expose the #1 issue with a Gencoupe which is the brakes

Brakes start to fade when overused
