How fast did you hit 1000 Miles?

Hey Guys, just picked a new FRS last week and already hit 550 miles even though I have a daily driver that I use for work. Desperately waiting for 1000 miles so I can finally experience the full potential. I was just wondering how long did it take you guys to hit 1k miles?

menikmati 09-11-2016 05:52 PM

Within the first day, bought out of state and drove it back home and was already past the break-in.

Hello Jeebz, WELCOME to the forum and CONGRATULATIONS on your new car .....

Yep, the first 1,000 miles can go pretty slow ..... took me a few days.

Even after 1,000 miles, if you have a MT, I suggest you set your shift light for about 6,000 RPMs. Why, because that is about where the highest HP and torque happens. Also, that setting will give you time to react before it hits the rev limiter.

Thanks for the tips Humfrz! Currently have it set at 4k, and have gotten it close to 5k a few times. I will have it set at 6k after the 1k miles as this is my first MT car. I will need the reaction time :sigh:

Nah, you won't. It's a nice little four banger, not a pro stock.
@humfrz, IMO it's ok to run past peak torque because that sets up better for the upshift. First through third are still pretty far apart.

Gunman 09-12-2016 12:56 PM

I think I was doing about 60-65mph when I hit 1000 miles....

Well, then, try going through second gear, then first to third won't be so far apart .......

To break in the car properly, that would be the first 5000 miles. Do three oil changes at 1000 , 2500, and 5000 miles. The large majority of the time you really don't want to go over 4k rpms when shifting (eats more gas going over 4k rpms , plus it's best to keep the rpms low when breaking in the car).

My motto : do it right, or don't do it at all.:party0030::burnrubber::thumbsup:

gramicci101 09-12-2016 08:45 PM

I bought the car on a Saturday with 4 miles, and by that Wednesday I was over 1000.

Well, there, @Adam_L your break in philosophy and mine differ a bit.

I pretty much go along with what the manual recommends. Keep the revs below 4,000 RPMs and vary the speed for the first 1,000 miles and change the oil at 7,500 miles. After, 1,000 miles, I (not the manual) recommend not running it up past 6,500 RPMs.

I figure changing the oil (under normal use) more often than one time before 7,500 miles just puts undue wear and tear on the threads of the drain plug .... :D

By not going over 4,000 RPMs after break in ....... you will never beat that mustang at the light ...... :(

Well, any car manufacture can say to change the oil at a higher mileage interval 7500 miles, or 10,000 miles, etc. , but ultimately is that the best thing for the engine? Oil is the engines life blood.

Even with top end synthetic oil (Amsoil, Royal P, etc) , I'd trust that to go 6-8k miles, post 5k miles on the car.

Is it more expensive to replace the engine prematurely, or replace the oil at a shorter interval ? Do the math.:respekt::iono:

Well, back-in-the-day, my first road vehicle had only a by-pass type oil filter (which filtered only about 10% of the oil). I changed the oil once in the spring with 30W and once in the fall, with 20 W.

That car lasted me 14 years, without a major overhaul.

I truly believe that the manufacturers want their cars engines to last quite a while, therefore, their oil change recommendations reflect that.

Yes, I agree, that "oil is an engines life blood". Also, blood is the human body's "life blood" ...... but we don't go around getting blood transfusions all the time .... :D

humfrz

Adam_L 09-23-2016 03:11 PM

Well, you're right most of us do not go around getting blood transfusions yearly, etc. , however look at Keith Richards of Rolling Stones. The last several years, he goes to Sweden and gets a full body blood transfusion from virgin Swedish lady blood. This has in turn kept him alive, lively, heart still beating. 1 + 1 = does equal 3 !!:respekt:

If we had turbos on our cars, that cooks the oil... gets it darker , faster. Thus breaks down the oil faster then N/A engines.

go_a_way1 09-23-2016 03:13 PM

Warning troll post

Well at 1000mph it took me 1 hour

ToySub1946 09-23-2016 03:31 PM

My 2015 FRS (bought new) is now just under two years old with 36,094 miles currently on the odo.

Can't recall how fast miles accumulated at the beginning.

I do recall hitting the rev limiter two or three times, the day after I bought the car (dirt roading in the Lost Coast). Break-in period...what's that ?

I've changed the oil every 7500 miles, rotated tires also, nothing more.

Zero problems with the car so far. Not even one thing wrong to take it back to the dealership for warranty repairs. Best car I've ever owned for sure.

Edit: 9-28-16. Car, now with 36k miles drives and runs better than it did new. Therefore, I suggest disregarding any break-in period manufacturer suggests. Just beat the piss out of the engine from the get go.

Certainly my next car will be made by Fuji Heavy Industries, and in Japan only. [Outback and Legacy are made in Indiana, also Impreza beginning 2017 model year].

Note:In May 2016, Fuji Heavy Industries announced that it would change its name to Subaru Corporation pending approval by its shareholders, with the change planned to go into effect in April 2017

carbonBLUE 09-24-2016 12:02 PM

1 day, picked up the car 20 miles from my house and filled it up 3 times before the clock struck midnight.

swimmbo 09-24-2016 12:32 PM

I buzzed mine around town for a couple weeks, then did a road trip to the other corner of Montana and back, hit the 1000 mark about midway there. What a great car. I love it.

HeadBanger 09-25-2016 09:52 AM

After the first two weeks I had about 2500kms. I probably hit 1000 miles in the first week.

nikitopo 09-25-2016 10:27 AM

I did the break-in the first few months.

tumbla.jr 09-25-2016 11:23 AM

22 Hours. Purchased my car with 4 miles on it then drove straight to NY that night.

Jeebz 09-25-2016 11:47 PM

Just hit 1k miles yesterday and did an oil change today! Wow is this car loud at 6-7K RPM, :w00t:

strat61caster 09-26-2016 12:00 AM

52.5k miles here, going to do my next oil change at some point this week, followed the book written with advice from the engineers who designed the car and have never shorted the 7.5k oil change interval, a handful of track days and two seasons of autocross later it doesn't burn any appreciable amount of oil and feels better than it did off the showroom floor.

:burnrubber:

Sapphireho 09-28-2016 09:37 PM

I think it was about a month. At 20 months now and am at 9k miles.

FirestormFlex 09-30-2016 12:49 AM

I bought my car new in July 2015 and I'm at 24k miles. I hit 1000 within the first few weeks.

hdbahn 10-03-2016 02:41 PM

Working on it! Fifty days and 850 miles mostly on two trips toward the curvy part of the state (NC). Almost a crisis finding Premium (1st non-dealer fill-up) outside Knoxville where I had a nice lip scrape getting out of a parking garage (& not inspired by the broken glass I parked next to.) Swapped daily drivers from my concert-weary Focus to my underused WRX that donated a cheap set of Kazeras and Hankook A/S for however long, since I invested in TPMS I don't want to redo every six months.

Dadhawk 10-03-2016 03:46 PM

17 Days for me.

Mach Midnight 10-21-2016 10:29 AM

About a week and a half, including a 260mi trip.

ToyotaFan84 10-21-2016 01:03 PM

I've had the car in my possession for about 24 hours and have put about 170 miles on it. I have the next few days off from work, I'm seriously contemplating just getting in and driving around California.

Question for those that finished their break in. What was it like the first time you took it to the redline?

bcj 10-21-2016 01:47 PM

Try not to hit redline in 1st gear. It gets there too fast.

Specially if you're raging at the slow bumpkin that got in your way.

Blown DI seals from bouncing around on the limiter, from what I've heard.

Oxyg3n 10-21-2016 04:39 PM

Hit 2500 miles in one and a half months. What are your guy's opinion on pushing the car hard in the mountains at this mileage?

I was thinking changing at 5000..why 3000? It's really weird because the car actually came with too much oil. It goes past the 2nd hole on the dipstick and I'm not sure if that's normal on a new car.
