Anyone know why the 86 is lighter than the brz?

According to the Toyota website: http://www.toyota.com/86/2017/featur...ties/6253/6252

and according to the Subaru website:
http://www.subaru.com/vehicles/brz/index.html

So the 86 version is 2,774 lb's whereas the brz (premium) is 2,785. A whole 11 pounds lighter. What is that?

Mr.ac 09-07-2016 11:42 PM

Heavy BRZ badges, more air in the tires, some one took a shit before the weigh ins, some put their burrito in the BRZ, the BRZ was in the middle of the circle jerk, the 86 is bulimic.
Some one had a full tank of gas, some one took a shit in the BRZ. Take your pick. Or make up one.

For real? Dude, really?

nico_rsx 09-08-2016 12:04 AM

At least one other person (that would be me) is interested to know.
Since I do a lot of AutoX, 10-20lbs is a lot. I'm still more interested in the BRZ right now.
Also if you search in google "toyota 86 weight", you can see 2760lbs for the base 86.

finch1750 09-08-2016 12:06 AM

base 86 is more bare bones in other countries. And the BRZ has nicer interior/more wiring etc that probably add up.

I love burritos so I guess I'm going to have to go with the BRZ

Yep, I'll buy into this theory ....... just a bunch of little things that add up .... :)

Hmm. That's heavier than 2016.

2016 FRS M/T - 2758 lbs
2016 BRZ M/T - 2764 lbs

The 10 lb difference is mostly going to be in the crap you remove or change out anyways if you're really that hardcore into weight reduction.
Which I am.

Sound deadening
Extra buttons/switches
Bumper design
Different Headlight
Maybe the Subaru were weighed with foglights because they're more common?
Different fender vent weight?
Different (more emblems on the BRZ?)
Different suspension
Does the BRZ come standard with the spoiler vs Toyota just an option?
I mean the list goes on...
Barebones to the meat of the car, it's the same weight and 10 lbs shouldn't make or break your decision on which car to get, regardless of how much of diehard weight reductionatificationing fan you are.

Scale was zero'd out differently on FRS/or BRZ weighing day ?

The highlighted and the standard trunk mats.

I've seen most of my BRZ's interior removed. What is this sound deadening you speak of? That said the FRS always was the poverty pack of the two (features wise). All those amenities do add up in the end, but then I myself am pretty happy with every one of them :)

In AU the 86 GT model is pretty stripped out, but I think the FRS in the states was even more so.

Only the 86 RC version in Japan would of had less, and then not all that much less. I think it mostly was the lack or aircon really. Not sure, but wouldn't surprise me if the whole audio system was deleted too.

The new ones have more sound reduction. That was one of the first new features that we had info on.

NyC Zn6 09-08-2016 10:07 AM

heated seats lol

mdm 09-08-2016 10:10 AM

What about auto AC and seat heaters? Wasn't those always available in the BRZ but not in FRS except RS?

nikitopo 09-08-2016 10:39 AM

There are 2 versions of A/C. One plain and one dual zone.

FX86 09-08-2016 10:40 AM

because the 86 is poor

One example is that the FRS does not come with a trunk liner.

Obvious that's not much, but probably good for at least 1 pound.

JD001 09-08-2016 11:06 AM

The torque curve is fatter in the BRZ..

HeadBanger 09-08-2016 11:33 AM

Like everybody else said, little things add up.

Off the top of my head:
Trunk liner
Headlights (maybe LED headlights are heavy as hell)
Spoiler - The trunk has extra reinforcements too where the spoiler bolts on
Fog lights
Climate control
Heated seats
The fancy computer in the cluster
Steering wheel controls.

Of all those things I listed, there's a lot of extra wiring.

I think 10lbs is pretty good for all the extra stuff to be honest!

I thought I read at some point the FRS had heated mirrors too.

Also think of all the extra relays and fuses and such!

8R6 09-08-2016 12:11 PM

the BRZ is heavier because it has AWD. Because subaru.

Only the Canadian ones. Must be all of an extra 100 grams or so in total.

FR-Sky 09-08-2016 02:03 PM

yours didn't come with 2?

Mine has a foam one and a regular spare looking tire. The foam spare sits inside the spare tire. Weird design, but can be used in a pinch.

I have the super lite BRZ with no spare, switchable AWD and drift mode function.

careful with that the new RS is having problems with it functioning properly. Obviously different vehicle, but Ford/Subaru shared the same awd/tcs system...

It's amazing how quickly things can become derailed

Th3rdSun 09-09-2016 08:44 PM

I'm surprised that not a single person mentioned the different suspensions in both cars, considering that it's probably the single biggest driving difference between both. Maybe, just maybe, that softer suspension from the BRZ could account for at least a few extra pounds in difference.

I started to disagree but an extra turn on the rear coils would add just that. Hmmm...

BRZnut 09-10-2016 08:03 AM

liner under the front hood. Brz has it but I don't think the FRS/86 does.

The 2017 model, they have the same suspension.

Trust86 09-10-2016 03:33 PM

My FRS weighs 2,740?
