MPG

Anyone else getting below avg MPG? The most I have gotten is 25.7 MPG on the indicator and that was on road trip from Moorpak to Solvang to Hearst Castle and then back to Moorpark (about 380-400 miles). The car is auto and stock with only after market air intake installed.

I suspect your "indicator" is messing with you.

I's suggest you check your mileage the old fashioned way ...... fill to click off, note mileage, drive, fill to click off, note mileage, note fuel used ...... divide the little number into the big number.

Making that trip with an auto, you should be getting from 31.4 to 39.7 MPG.

;)

I think it's been a decade or two since you've driven that, there's quite a bit of traffic nowadays that will sink that mileage into the 20's just like OP noticed.

;)

OP, EPA fuel economy is ~27mpg mixed driving for an automatic, if you can set the cruise control for 65mph and leave it there for 95% of a tank of gas you will absolutely see >32mpg. If you take your car to the track and drive it hard you will see <13mpg. I do not believe anything is wrong with your car.

Of course not. Don't be silly!

LOL. I wouldn't mind the low MPG if there wasn't some slow drivers in the canyons and not allowing me to have fun. Need to make that trip again on a weekdays..

Not really necessary to go to all that trouble to get to >32MPG. My lifetime average is over 33MPG (calculated), and I spend most of the 80,000+ Miles commuting at speeds between 25 and 65MPH. I rarely have a set speed, or use the cruise control, and race away from just about every stoplight (not spinning the tires mind you, but no soccer Mom in the mystic 5 second Odyssey has ever beat me off the line)

I'm beginning to think I have the magic mileage edition though since I seem to be outside the norm.

You are the perfect example that what you drive in has infinitely more impact than HOW you drive, furthering my point.

My old commute AVERAGED 25 mph, I never saw north of 45. No guessing either, my 25 mile commute took me 1 hour during peak traffic (thank god for flexible workplaces, <30 minutes if I left home before 6am). It would have been great to brag about an average of even 30 mph, and sounds like you average closer to 40+. You're right, there's not much trouble involved in getting over 32mpg, other than changing your life around to reduce traffic.

And based on OP's 2nd post in this thread, sounds like he's got a pretty heavy foot to boot.

:burnrubber:

And before you cry 'But Atlanta has the worst traffic in the nation!' statistically Atlantans spend ~25% less time in traffic than LA/SF citizens per the first google result that shows up.

Nope not going to claim that because I don't drive in Atlanta traffic. I go the opposite direction, driving 80 miles round trip away from Atlanta. True I rarely sit still which is the real "drinker" of gas on a commute.

I use the Fuelly app to keep track of real MPGs

Bonburner 09-20-2016 02:35 PM

i've been averaging 23 for a year or so now .. the first three years I averaged 27.
Not sure what happened but im hoping my 60k spark plug & coil pack replacement maintenance helps it out.

Stang70Fastback 09-20-2016 02:41 PM

My average over the life of the car (36,000 miles) has been 26 MPG. This is based on actual fill-ups (I log EVERY fuel stop), and not the in-dash readout, so it is absolutely accurate.

That 26 MPG average includes every single one of my autocross events, winter rallycross, and general hooning year-round. If you took all of those things out, the average would be higher. On the highway, on warmer days, at 75 MPH the car will easily do over 30 MPG.

why? 09-20-2016 10:28 PM

Any type of driving near the redline will drop mpg like a rock. If you baby the heck out of it and are one of those lucky people that live in a very flat area you can get 34 mpg+.

And sitting in traffic kills gas mileage, etc. MPG has dozens of variables.

Did you move, change jobs or your schedule?

Seriously, I can pinpoint on my fuel data when I moved closer to work and when my girlfriend moved in with me and I stopped spending so much time cruising on the freeway so my 'average' fuel economy dropped very similar to yours (28-24) but I am filling my car up half as often so I'm saving money.

I check my MPG each fill and I noticed the change when there was no change in my activities of daily living.
I noticed it after a certain mileage threshold and some body work was done
I'm assuming the major culprit was the bodywork .. but nothing seems off and I've taken the car into a dealer to do a full work up on alignment and everything.
The car's in the shop to get another alignment done at the dealers (somehow Pep boys lost a bolt that's related to the camber ... so in 1 month my driver's front wheel developed huge negative camber causing serious uneven wear - i lost the stock tires because of this ... getting the car back Thursday; hoping Pep boys will refund me and if I'm lucky pay for the alignment as payment for my lost stock rubber lol)

This just flicked on a light bulb in my head.

If I'm not mistaken, the HPFP is mostly utilized in the higher RPM range. So it makes perfect sense that redlining all of the time will sacrifice more fuel than in a typical automobile.

I've pretty much always shifted in the higher RPM range in previous cars because shifting sooner actually caused me to increase throttle demand to accelerate at desired levels. Shifting at higher RPMs decreased throttle demand due to the higher gear ratio.

However, due to the fact that this car is equipped with a HPFP I am convinced that shifting at higher RPMs will significantly reduce your MPGs compared to traditional cars.
