Would you take it back?
1 Attachment(s)
Hi folks,
Just wanted to gauge your opinion concerning paint match-up. My Series 10 FRS was rear-ended a few weeks ago and it was fixed last week basically with a new bumper. However, when I took delivery of the car, I noticed that the paint on the bumper did not match the paint on the rest of the car body. At first I was given a lecture on how the paint appearance will always be different because of the different materials (plastic vs metal) being covered. When I was still not satisfied with that explanation, I was provided with a write-up that stated that I can bring the car in after a couple of weeks to allow the fresh paint to cure and the bumper will be repainted at no cost to me. The question that I have is the following: Is it worth it to go through this again and probably the paint will still not match or should I just accept it as it looks right now? Your comments are welcome. Thanks Pat |
You make them repaint it as many times as it takes until you are satisfied.
|
Doesn't match, take it back.
|
Make them repaint it. It matched when you bought it.
|
It should match the factory finish perfectly. Take it back.
|
From what I see in the photo, the paint is WAY off.
Their statement is total BS, the factory can paint different materials the same color. Take it back. |
The different materials do make it hard to match. Make them blend it with the rear quarter panels and trunk, not just paint the bumper. only way it will look good.
|
They should have some sort of gun that you hold up to the paint and it provides a "formula". With that formula your paint is matched. It should look identical. I've had my bumper painted and it looks identical to the fenders.

I'd get insurance involved AND take it back or see if they'll make a claim with this shop so you can take it to another one... I'd be pissed... GL with resolution!
|
Usually, I'd say ...... just get over it.
However, from your picture, I'd suggest you take it back and let them make another attempt. humfrz |
I had the Suby dealer replace my rear bumper cover.
They wanted the car to go to the paint place with the new cover so they could match it perfectly. Something was wrong and the dealer said NO - Do it again. I waited an extra 2 days for it, but it matches my GBS perfectly. I never did see what was wrong with the first try. Make them do it again. |
I'm willing to bet your front bumper matches much closer than that. Take that back, it is WAY off in that picture.
|
I am usually in the "hard to be perfect and if you have to squint in the sunlight to see the difference it is fine" group but shit even in the picture it is like the difference hits you with a baseball bat. Take that thing back it is not going to change in a couple of weeks.
|
As stated by many. Take it back that is some amateur hour shit there that is not even close.

Tell them you want the back bumper to look like the front bumper (that's made out of plastic too and somehow a Subaru robot in Gunma got it right). Your rear bumper has too much blue. At least they didn't feather it out.
I understand different materials have different reflective properties but that's off. |
take it back
|
That needs to be taken back. That's ridiculous. Let us know how it goes.
|
Any chance you could take a better picture? I see a bluish hue on BOTH the front and back bumper. Can't tell if it's just the lighting. (of course I am partially color blind: reds, greens ... it all looks the same to me :) Seriously if you see the difference and they're willing to repaint .... find out if the paint is going to be the same. Same paint .... same result. They need to adjust the paint to account for the sun exposed adjacent body panels.

Was going to say if you can forget about it who cares, but looked at .jpg again and it does look two-tone. Absolutely complain.
Too lazy to read and figure out where you are but if it's an insurance repair tell them to stuff it, take the car to a better shop and get them to pay the bill. You should be totally within your rights to pick the shop regardless of price, going back to the same place will likely produce the same results imo. Good body shops are extremely hard to find, and most Yelp reviews will gave praise over quick turnaround and a smile and not a second thought to the quality of work. |

I also, reckon that he is just getting some opinions from his peers that may have had their cars repainted. As far as your comment, I suggest you just use the scroll wheel on your computer's mouse or track ball to skip past posts that bother you. humfrz |

I work with fleet cars and my last position was inspecting our cars for damage or bad body work for resale. We use inexpensive shops and that means a lot of stuff must get redone. Even when we hired some of the more expensive shops, some with brand names...same problems. I could tell lots of stories about screwed up work, my favourite though is a 2014 Genesis sedan. Apparently had 3 of our bodyshops work on it...all needed to be redone, but first, we send it to another shop for rear bumper work because it was cracked...when it returns it needed to be redone because the paint work was really bad...totaling 4 redos by 4 different shops. |

I can see the paint now and they didn't bother wiping the compound out of the cracks. I have a hunch it was bondo'd. I'm just not going to think about it because I don't care for showcars, I got this thing to beat it up and drive it hard. It's subtle, 99/100 people wouldn't notice it. The paint missing from the roof due to birdshit would be the first thing noticed anyway. :burnrubber: At this point if I want it pretty it's getting a respray in any damn color I choose, but I don't have a few thousand bucks laying around. |

I used to paint cars when I was in HS, so I know how tricky it can be. I got pretty good at it ....... as long as the paint was enamel ......:D
......and NO @Tcoat they weren't ALL black ....... :) humfrz |

@Norville Lighten up Frances.

Even the worse shops i've seen in NY do better, take it back or if through insurance get them involved to switch shops. Thats not even close, like someone above said they can try blending it (paint matching one panel is hard) but that color doesn't even look close.

Thanks to all Pat |
I feel your pain, because I, too, have a 10 Series and know just how unique the paint is on our cars. The work done on your car shouldn't be accepted, and there's a very obvious difference in color between the bumper and quarter panel that anyone can spot. If the quarter panels were undamaged in the collision, contrary to what two people have suggested you do not want to blend or feather the new bumper paint into that of the surrounding quarter panels. A skilled painter will be able to get near-perfect match when reprinting the bumper on its own.
Good luck - like I said, I feel your Pain! |

While I agree you should take it back as it is way off but it will be hard to match paint regardless. Heck, even if damage is on the metal surfaces as well, 8-9x of 10, the paint won't match due to it being different materials. However, any self respecting true painter doesn't want to have to do things more than once so they will spray anywhere from 3-5 different test panels just to get the closest one.
Anyone that says it will match perfectly, go to any Toyota/ford/Lexus/Mercedes/etc, look carefully at any and most colors on the lot, you will find that even from the factory, the paint won't match 100% from any metal surface vs the bumper/plastic pieces. That is why when vehicles age and the moldings start to discolor before most metal parts. Also, regardless of ANY shop you take it to, for any repairs, they will use bondo, it's just a matter of how thick they lay it on and sand it back down. Even brand new cars and their panels may have "bondo" to remove any imperfections in the stamping/production process. |

Like everyone says, take it back. I know it must be a pain but its better than staying like that. I can imagine it looks worse in person. Paint wont always match 100% but they can definitely do better than that.
|
It looks like ass, they did horrible job. Get your money back and take it to competent people
|
Im getting my rear bumper replaced soon due to some scratches and warping from a small bumper to bumper accident over the weekend. this has me a little worried if the shop will actually match my paint correctly.
