Considering selling my car because of accidents
I love my car to death. She's the car that got me into cars. Especially more so since my dad who passed away wanted me to have a car (I was riding motorcycles only at this point).
But since I've owned it, other people are hitting it every year. It's pretty ridiculous. Before you guys say it's my fault for not being a careful driver, I don't believe it is. The first two accidents are when it was parked someone hit it and this third one is while I was stopped at a light trying to turn right and rear ended. Is this car an accident magnet? I'm considering trading it to get something else but having a hard time even thinking about letting it go. |
Either trolling... or you should just be glad you weren't sitting on your bike at a stop light while getting nailed. Perhaps the car has saved your life and you didn't know it, but now you owe your undying loyalty to its perpetuation :confused0068:
|
no car is an accident magnet...it is combination of luck and how much you can influence your surroundings.
in my eyes it is pretty silly to want to get rid of a beloved car due to other people unless this is indeed due to your negligence.. E: admittedly my first FRS got totaled by someone running a red light while I was making a left green arrow turn and while it was certainly the other party's fault I can admit that I could have been more cautious even though it was a red light |
throw some hawaiian salt around your car to bless it. ;)
|
It is smaller than the average vehicle so it'll be marginally less likely to be seen. But this sounds more like unlucky situations rather than doomed fate
|
I would make a decision on this based on the condition of the vehicle.
How's the frame and other major metal bits? |
Accidents are going to happen regardless of what car you drive. Sure some factors skew probability (your car is low, small, and white), but none of your examples sound like things you have caused. It's just other people being terrible drivers.
If you were in an SUV, would you still have been backed into twice, and rear ended? Possibly. If you are looking at getting rid of your car because you can't emotionally stand the fact that it is getting beaten on with these accidents, will you really be any different with another car? That however is a different mentality than getting rid of it because it's "an accident magnet" (which is just your anecdotal experience; surely you are about to get replies for a dozen forum users who have never been in an accident). If you love the car, drive it, but accept the fact that it does not live in a bubble. Do your best to minimize risks (park away from other cars if you have to, leave more space in front when stopped and watch cars approach in your rear view mirror and move up if you don't think they are stopping in time, etc.), and just enjoy it. |

No. Well, then don't. There ain't nothing wrong with the car or your driving. Driving a car is a risk......just part of life for most people. Just relax ....... and be aware of your surrounds when you are driving. humfrz |
Keep it. Or trade it in for a 2017 if you think yours is cursed.

It's because it's white.
Paint it yellow with orange stripes and your problems will be solved. And maybe add flashing strobes. |
Just bad luck. Has nothing to do with the car. Tired of the car and the bad karma? Just move on. Lots of cool cars out there.
btw: my condolences on your late father. |
Could be because FL.

A 2013 with accidents isn't worth much. I bought mine (2013) last August for $19.5k and got rear ended a week later. Tried to trade it in a few months ago at 31k and the dealer offered me $12.5k.

I'll chime in on this. My 2016 got hit over night in the left rear about 2 months ago. Never found the fucker who did it. My left tail light was smashed and the bumper was scratched and dented in on the left side. Unfortunately I went and reported it to cops out of rage and the stupid belief they may try and find the culprit (didn't happen), but never filed any insurance claim. I decided to buy Valenti's for the tail lights rather than keeping oem and the bumper was popped out so it wasn't as bad.
The bad part, however, was that the bumper was not able to clip onto the clips properly and was not seated properly. The tail light on that side also did not sit properly. A month later my grandfather and I took the bumper off to find that the frame got pushed inward, and the clip trays for the bumper were not in their correct place. We used the tail light as a reference for where the clip tray below the tail light is supposed to be, and did some homebrew to make it work. I sprayed the the parts of metal where the pain cracked with rustproof spray paint and got the bumper to have a roughly 95% fit. It is now only slightly visible on the side near the wheel well, where the space between quarter panel and bumper is a little bit greater than the other side. I have had thoughts of what to do in terms of selling the car, but decided to keep it and drive it till it dies. Only thing I'm worried about is the dent in the trunk possibly causing some sort of structural fault in the car or premature rust building up. From the exterior though, it looks clean. It just has scratches on the bumper which look like I backed into something. |
Yep, its totally the car. Nobody will give you anything for it since it cursed but I'll be nice and give you $500 for it
|
Don't sell it cause of other idiots :(
|
part-out maybe?
how much you want for the rear floor mats? |
Black cars and white cars seem to be invisible. I've had a few close calls with my red BRZ, but I've had more close calls and actual accidents with my black Jeep Cherokee that is twice the BRZ's size. One idiot rear ended my Jeep and actually said, "I didn't see you." And I thought, of course not, with your head shoved up your ass like that.
Keep the car. Drive and park defensively. I always assume everyone around me is about to do something stupid. I always look for parking spaces where the car is protected or where someone would have to make a deliberate effort to hit it. While this car isn't an accident magnet, some cars are. Everybody I ever knew who bought a Fiero ended up getting hit. Something about that car's shape made it invisible, even in red. |
Just probably bad luck, as they say, someone has to be on the top end of the bell curve and with a few accidents under your belt, you will probably be fine from here on in...unless you are skewing the data by your driving habits! :)
Seriously, don't get rid of the car because of this. |
May I suggest this to make it more visible:
http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-4WmEBhzAiC...gh-CAUTION.jpg Honestly speaking, I don't believe in cursed car, but I do believe in lucky car. And if a car has saved you by taking damage on itself...then its lucky for u. |

that bicycle hit the car!!!!...damn rider-less bikes |
I don't know anybody who's died in a car accident. I do however know at least 3 that died in motorcycle accidents.
Sometimes you just have a bad run of luck and that appears to be the case here. |

They see the strobes and colors, think "VEGAS!!!" and turn the wheel right into the car. |
NO DONT SELL IT! - Use it to your advantage.
Get a fwd & rev dashcam, Team up with a lawyer, and drive around with your accident magnet. Sue everybody that hits you and use the proceeds to buy a Cayman S. |

I wouldn't sell the car, and, before making my next comment, I'd like to be clear that I did read the part where you said you weren't a negligent or careless driver, so, just to be clear, I am NOT suggesting that you are at fault for any of the damage.
Now, having said that, the smaller and lower to the ground a car gets, the more I drive it like my bike. When I'm on my Honda, I drive with the assumption that EVERYONE on the road is attempting to kill me all of the time. Makes for kind of a nerve-wracking riding experience at first, but it keeps you alive and as safe as possible. I always park my bike so that there's the least amount of likelihood of someone backing into it or knocking it over. Likewise, I always park my FR-S away from other cars whenever possible, especially cars that show any evidence of kids being transported inside. Kids are typically thoughtless when opening or closing car doors. I concur w/ one of the earlier posters.. it's possible your car saved your life; good think you weren't on your bike, eh? Drive and park like you're on your bike, and I think you'll find that your luck changes for the better. Keep the shiny side up, baby. Barry |

Not sure how selling the car would stop you from getting hit, if you were planning to buy something else..

Sell your car and get a big ole cowboy truck. F350 with 10 inches of lift and big tires. Put a rifle on your gun rack. Fly a Murica flag on a long pole on the back of your truck.
Sure, everyone will think you have a small johnson, but nobody is going to hit your truck. There. Solved your problem. |

All you can do is play the odds and try to stack them in your favor. |
Gotta say, I've had more close calls in the last two months than with any other car I've owned. In every single case, three so far, another driver intersected my path apparently without looking. Latest was yesterday- a Subaru wagon pulled directly into my path in a construction zone at 50 mph. Got on the binders hard, swerved as far as possible and missed the bastard by inches. It took all of my self control to keep my anger from making me do something regrettable.

A couple of years ago, I drove 1986 toyota truck. Would not believe the number of really nice expensive cars that just pulled out of driveways onto the road in front of me. The fact is most people on the road are idiots.
When my frs had 20 day plates, some idiot opened a door and put a $1000 dent and scratch in rear quarter panel. According to my insurance company, this is a common occurrence. |
Considering selling my car because of accidents
2 things, 1. don't park it on the street & park away from others. A corner is always nice...? 2. Be very aware of your surroundings @ all times. Do you look @ your rear view mirror for traffic/car behind you all the time? I do.
Defensive driving is something that you shouldn't have to think about. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk |

Also change your name to "Johnson" and gain 100 pounds so people will refer to you as "Big Johnson" in order to get around the "small johnson" conundrum. |
The car is small and harder to see and easier to be hidden by other cars. Sounds like bad luck. Keep it and keep driving defensively like you have to on a bike. Most accidents can be avoided.

Mines a magnet for dings due to kids with with parents who lack the knowledge to show them how to hold the door when opening and closing. Ive gotten 7 dings...yes even when park 1/2 mile away.
What helped ease this is by adding a sign that says, "recording in progress." |
