Changing oil without new plug crush washer.
 

I'm changing my own oil for the first time tomorrow, got all the supplies I needed tonite but no autopart stores had the drain plug crush washers in stock.

Would I be okay until the next oil change with the current washer, or should I wait and order one from the toyota dealer? How imperative is it?

Have you tried checking local dealers? If not...

I don't see a problem with re-using it. If you have a torque wrench, tighten it little bit more than factory torque spec. If it's 30 ft/lb, try 33ft/lb. Then pour a quart of oil and see if it leaks or not.

You can reuse it once (or a few times like some people haha)

Just buy a dozen next you pass by the parts store. They are cheap enough

Thanks guys, closest dealer is about 35 minutes away so I think I'll just wing it this time. Granted I don't lose it in the oil bucket lol.

Good look. I was wondering if the design of the washer allowed it to be a one-time seal sorta thing. Haven't got to looking up if the crush term means anything.

wow, that's really bad. Mine was flat and pretty.

It does mean it "crushes". Most (all?) cars use it. You will feel it crush when you tighten it. Maybe some crush more than others. The one in the pic is pretty extreme, of the dozens and dozens of oil changes I've done I not seen one like that. Even after reusing some of mine a couple times.

Just get a short Fumoto, install it with a new crush washer. Cant you just wait to
to do the oil change when you have the peace of mind of a fresh washer? It‘s not like you can just remove the nut and put in the washer without collecting the oil and refilling afterward.

I would wait till you get a crush washer. If you absolutely insist on re using it flip the washer over. Still I wouldn't do it.

Keep in mind that the first time the oil is changed it's not easy to find the crush washer. I've owned a lot of Subaru's and it's always the case. Because they paint the oil pan after they put the plug is installed, the crush washer is stuck to the plug and camouflaged. Sometimes it takes a knife blade to separate it from the plug. I've known a number of cases where people didn't think one was there and installed one so they had two. That will cause leaks.

I always install the Fumoto Oil Drain Valve, it makes things a lot easier. I have this one ready to install next oil change.

I like first oil changes at the dealer. Particularly because the factory oil filter is almost welded to the engine from the factory. This car its easy to get leverage on it but I was in for the spoiler install anyway so I let them do it.

There's a crush washer?
I've done 2 or 3 oil changes since October and haven't changed the washer and haven't had an issue :/
Will probably change it this time or put in a valve
