Spec-D Headlights and/or Crystal Eye Style
Hello!
I am looking into FINALLY buying my new headlights. Had my eye on winjets and Spec-Ds for a while. GF really like spec-ds so I'll probably prioritize them more so than the winjets, however I heard of a lot of yucky reviews regarding the spec-ds. I live in LA where the brightness of the LED boomerang won't bother me so much (I will be HID-ing them anyways). Anyone have these particular headlights that can shed some light regarding them? Pros, cons, reviews, suggestions etc. Also wanted to see if anyone in the ft86 community purchased Spec-d-like or crystal-eye-like headlights via ebay any reviews on those? |

I have them and love the look its awesome however the UV coating peels off within 6 months, and the projectors suck balls for the light output and with 55w HID's they are bright enough but the cut off sucks. They also love to get stuck on highbeams so I have to bang on them every time I turn them on at night so I don't blind people on my way home. (and I cant use my highbeams unless I want them on the rest of the drive) Personally I like them enough to live with the flaws but most people don't. That all being said they are aftermarket lights so this kind of thing is to be expected. EDIT: Mine are crystal eye but they are the same thing as far as I know. |

Oh my jesus... :C Hammered the nail in the coffin :C Do you have pictures by any chance? I want to see the UV coat and all that jazzz if you don't mind T_T. I went on google but I only see 1 member's spec d pictures. while the rest of them are taken to look majestic and not-so-much real. |

Its hard to capture in pictures but it looks just like clear coat peeling off. so far I have just been scrubbing it when I wash it and it seems to be fine. It looks the same as at did in the areas it has peeled off. I have been told its normal for most if not all aftermarket headlights to have that issue. You could also customize the OEM ones to your tastes? I did that on my buddies car and so far so good. |

I have winjets, the UV coat has started to peel after 1 year and a half. But 2 years later and the LED in the DRL are still running perfectly, and they are wired to be on when the key is in ignition. The cutoff for HID is pretty decent, haven't tried it in the back roads but they are sufficient to drive at night without asking yourself "what is that?"

I have the Spec-D's and I absolutely love them. I live in LA as well and have had them for two years and no peeling whatsoever. I haven't had any problems with low/high beams either, but they're definitely bright enough. I've had friends think I was using my high beams when I wasn't. I really don't understand the bad reviews, maybe the others were a bad batch? Anyways, I love mine and don't regret buying them at all.

I dont know if I want the spec ds or the winjets anymore.... Winjets would look great because I have LED drl strips on my car.. compliments the DRL on the winjets but I wanted specds ever since SEMA.... before I even had the car... >.> |

I have the Spec-Ds. One of the very first owners of the set. It was a love/hate relationship. Like mentioned above. Cutoff sucks. I felt like what ever I did, It would always point to the sky. w/ the hids it was even worse. I mean great for me, I could see the whole road, but as for everybody else, they would always flash their highbeams at me. The boomerang part was bright, it was a joke during the day same goes w/ the turn signals, but they looked great as the day got darker. After 6 months of ownership, the driver side housing split apart, I tried to bake them to reseal them, no idea what happened. But there goes 400 bucks I'd never get back. Oh also their warranty is 90 days. So good luck getting them replaced. When they worked. It was cool, the boomerang matched 6k HIDS almost perfectly.

I read all your reviews and posts Chen, stalker-status. As I was googling reviews... It makes me reallly want to stay away from there.. I jsut REALLY like the boomerang... I wanted halos or boomerangs as headlights since forever. But I just don't know how to do anything by myself >.> thinking of maybe just getting winjets and halo-ing them by paying someone professional but I won't even know the price for that either >.> Thanks for sharing though. man oh man. |

Lol, I try to be helpful. If you want halos. Its probably just cheaper to bake open your oem ones and add halos. Also I think fteightysix has an option for them to bake it open and add what leds and stuff. |
OP why don't you try to get a set of legit 10 series/Monogram headlights or BRZ headlights?
|
stay stock and buy LED's for DRLs and low beams

A little off topic, but does anyone know what the key difference is between Crystal Eye headlights and Spec D headlights? The only noticeable difference I can find is that the Crystal Eye headlights have the flowing turn signals.

I have the Spec D's as well. the UV did start to peel off after ~1 year. If i'm not too lazy I can take pictures tomorrow.
I was warned about the crappiness of the low/high beams by fteightsix/86speed, thus got the lens swapped with winjets. (was going for murimoto, but turned out to be difficult to install...and rather expensive, maybe one day..) so they are HID. they look great. I've wired them to run the drl all the time. very happy with them! |

for a long while I couldn't get it to work no matter which instruction I followed..
bought diodes, recorded every voltage/resistance etc. tried multiple configs, either got park/hi or lo only... should have paid the $50 to get it preconfigured.. Then I stumbled across this and it's working great right now. Visually, I still need to nicely route the wire from the fuse box, but no biggies.. http://www.ft86speedfactory.com/imag..._power_FRS.jpg more instructions here: http://www.ft86speedfactory.com/spec...-frs-1922.html I'll have to remember how I did it exactly. will let you know |
Thanks for the info! I'm going to try wiring the positives to that spot in the fuse box. Although the instructions on ft86speedfactory said to wire the grounds to the battery... I'm going to keep my grounds where they are to save time but that shouldn't matter right? What difference would it make to ground it to the battery rather than somewhere in the engine bay?

This is how my Spec Ds are holding up after about 2 years

Bump
Looks more "newer" than my oem headlights |
I have had my Spec-D's for 2 or 3 years and love them. In this photo, it was raining, and got some mist on them, so that's what you'r seeing on the headlight.
