Does This Look Stupid?

I haven't had a lot of sleep, and I've been staring at these brake caliper "clip ons" I guess since I'll be going with larger wheels and you'll see them more.

I've been staring too long, I need an intervention. Do these look good, okay, AutoZone? Maybe 1 to 10 with 10 being completely unidentifiable from the real thing (lol).

Stupid, Bling, Rice.

Not to even mention that a huge amount of cooling comes from convection (air blowing over calipers).
Putting a cover over them is counter productive to convective cooling.
Might as well put some thermal blankets over them....

MarkR171 07-24-2016 04:46 PM

Yes. There is nothing positive about this.

Ultramaroon 07-24-2016 04:46 PM

No, no, no!

NO!

ryoma 07-24-2016 04:54 PM

spend $500 more and you can get real brakes to show off (front at least) with extra performance.

FNCrazy 07-24-2016 04:58 PM

Ok, heads back in the game, (almost). No cheap ass covers. No $500 for front brake upgrades, as much as I'd love to.

Next stupid idea. Paint the calipers? Look okay, or just leave the hell alone?

I make up 112% of what I say.

No! Well, TBH I've considered it.

...but NO!

I'm thinking that's the consensus... I will never think of such things again. I do however, have another idea that is so ricer I'm not even sure I want it out on the web! Tempting though....

Admitting having a problem is the first step. Fix your rear end and leave it bone stock for at least a year. :paddle:

Summerwolf 07-24-2016 05:28 PM

FNstupid

FNCrazy 07-24-2016 05:28 PM

Uh.... You know about my rear...? Oh... Well, I might not be able to leave it bone stock now since it needs new wheels. Oh! And I installed a new stereo/bluetooth/Android Auto/DVD/Nav thing the day before I decided to play ballerina in the road. So, not 'bone' stock anymore...

Haha! Or... Not very nice. Can't tell which.

Although, FNstupid would be quite an upgrade from FNcrazy, believe me.

Enjoy your day, take a nice drive! :)

ok, maybe more than $500, but come on don't tell me you don't like this?

http://www.rr-racing.com/RR-Racing-F...gt86fbk005.htm

they're really affordable for what they are. $200 more on top of that can get you even better brakes.

What's wrong with painting the calipers? I have caliper paint in my closet waiting for a nice day to do the work on.

As for covers- no. Hold in dust and heat.

justatroll 07-24-2016 06:15 PM

I bought what was considered to be High temperature caliper paint (specifically FOR brake calipers) that I used on my old rusty porsche calipers.

They looked pretty good.
Guess what dissolves "caliper paint"? - Brake Fluid.
Now my painted calipers look like old rusty calipers with a cheap ass paint job falling off.

So if that is what you are going for, by all means....

FNCrazy 07-24-2016 06:17 PM

I saw that first one say $795 and I was impressed, looked like something I should save up for, until I realized that's each, that I need 4!!

My hopes are in ruins.

Although, being a glass half spent kind of guy, if I'd have had these brakes yesterday, I probably wouldn't have gotten in a wreck in the first place.

Or a brain. If I'd had a brain yesterday I wouldn't have wrecked either... Only one line of thinking gets me a BBK though!

SMH....Yuck!

radroach 07-24-2016 06:24 PM

You'll feel pretty stupid if you spend $170 on that.

Which will NOT be happening due to my friends on the forum talking me off the ledge.

I should not shop when I didn't sleep and my car is in the shop because I wasn't nice to her.

that's for the front pair. the rear pair is more expensive at $960 though

but with almost $2000, you get nice looking calipers that have plenty of performance as well.

or maybe you should have bought a 2017 BRZ with the performance package since it comes with brembos

also, from personal experience, the more you look at car parts the more you want to buy. save yourself some trouble and stop looking when bored! lol

If you have brake fluid dripping down on your calipers, you have bigger problems than cheap rusty looking calipers.

2013, bought used last month. Can't afford a new one! And yes, my purchases and epiphanies come at night when I'm bored! :)

Not that I'm going to or anything, but how much real difference would a kit like that make to our cars? Never had a BBK in anything

probably won't really matter that much unless you track your car a lot and know the limits of your car. there was a person that did a comparison on these forums with BBK's and regular pads + fluid and it turned out that the BBK was only worth it if you tracked the car a lot (factoring in the price of the BBK and the price of just pads and fluid as well as performance for both).

but really, many people buy it for the bling factor lol. I would say a good set of pads and fluid can probably get you about 70% of the performance a BBK offers. however, I am no expert so don't quote me on that lol

I bleed my brakes a LOT and the bleeders are at the top of the calipers.

If you know of a way to 100% never drip any brake fluid when doing frequent bleeding operations, I am all ears.

There is another solution: Don't paint your calipers.

Doesn't need them. Track pads and spare rotors if you're anal. Stock calipers are sized nicely. Easy to trigger ABS until the stock pads fade.

Vracer111 07-24-2016 11:54 PM

If I were to upgrade the brakes it would be to the ESSEX AP Racing Sprint kit because of 10lbm off each front corner while increasing thermal capacity of the system yet not increasing the wheel MOI with a larger diameter rotor like many others. If it weren't for the $2k+ price it would already be on the car...

ZionsWrath 07-24-2016 11:54 PM

Save the money for broken parts for when you wreck
