AP Sprint clicking noise when turning

Hi there,

Wondering if anyone else with the AP kit has had "clicking noises" when turning? Most noticeable at relatively low speeds at sharper turning angles - could it be combination of floating rotors, j-hooks, and piston angles when turning?

Sounds like a metal-on-metal click, perhaps 2-4 times per revolution.

Thanks!

Yes! I installed the AP kit in the spring and the last two times at the track I've noticed a loud clicking noise when turning left or right. Haven't heard it street driving. I just assumed it was the brakes.

I don't have the AP kit buy I had a clicking noise with my Stoptech kit and found the noise coming from where the lines mount to the hard line on the fender wall. The clip from goodridge lines that I have that holds the line in there worked itself loose and when turning almost full lock left or right caused a click/tapping noise when turning.

Put new clips in that i had from an old stoptech kit and got rid of the noises. not sure if it helps, but could be a place to look.

@byun thanks for the suggestion - will take a look!

Check for anything making contact.

My sprint kit doesnt click andni tracked it 3 times with it so far since installation

@BRZtoni I'm wondering if it's related to wear on the rotor. It's just funny that I get noise on both sides now. Probably 8 track days on the set now.

I'm pretty sure the Sprint does not have a floating setup... from their site:
  • Aluminum hats on Endurance discs are floating, while hats on Sprint discs are bolted
If yours is floating, perhaps it needs to be tightened up?

That said, no noises from mine, but I probably abuse them far less. If it's a new noise, I'd suspect wear related or heat-cycle related. Inspect all fittings and fasteners.

im going to say i doubt its the rotors considering the main point for me to buy these BBK was that the rotors can last a lot of track times

like the other poster said, check the rotor top hat maybe it got loose?

Retorqued a couple of weeks ago but I realize now I only did 10ftlbs and not the 18 for the fixed style of the sprint rotors... woops. But no movement at 10ftlbs, likely none at 18 as well but will check.

Did you solve this?
How do you have your brake lines routed? It could be rubbing on your wheel. A line rubbing on the wheel weight would make that clicking noise.
If it is rubbing on your wheel, it is more than likely wearing out that one spot on your brake line, which could end up bad if it rubs all the way through

we have that problem with the Racer-X lower control arm and AP sprint kit, when completety turned the lower ball joint makes contact with the disk, must not be a problem with the stock LCA but worth a check.

For those that are in pinch and do not have extra clips laying around, your local O'reilly's has them for $2 (Box of 4).

According to O'reilly's it also fits Subaru Forester, Impreza, and Outback. If you want "OEM" your local dealership should carry it as well. Just look up the year model and cross reference etc.

My guess is slightly uneven pad deposits on the rotors which make contact with pads when turning. I believe the AP calipers don't have pad tensioners so they can click.

Going to revive this thread as I want to provide closure to people in the future. I think @Sleepless was closest to the answer - when you have an aggressive turning angle, the brake pads are just loose and clicking around. If you tap on brakes just a little, it will go away. This is because when we turn the wheel, due to gravity and the position of the brake caliper relative to the ground, the pads are going to move around. This is of course due to caster. Make sense?
