strong odor @ higher rpm's

Anyone notice a strong smell coming from the front end of the car after driving harder say on the highway? I am noticing a smell cant really explain it but it will last several seconds after running through the gears at higher rpms.

Andrew

Ben_G 07-06-2012 12:29 AM

Like burning electrical wires?

mRdeMs83 07-06-2012 12:31 AM

hmm not really. Just a strong odor almost engine or clutch..smell does not last long. And its only when I take the car to like 6-7k.

Ben_G 07-06-2012 12:38 AM

I've had a "burning electrical wire" smell in my last two new cars...and i drive my cars hard.... went away after a month or two.... I just assumed that it was machine oil or sealant burning off..... but damn, I must've stuck my head into the engine bay trying to sniff out the culprit more often than I should.... people in the parking lot must've thought I was crazy....

ahausheer 07-06-2012 12:51 AM

I think this was covered in an earlier thread. I believe the conclusion was that it was stuff that was left over from manufacturing was burning off. Nothing to worry about. Unless its a different problem.

mRdeMs83 07-06-2012 01:01 AM

thanks

F3dzo 07-06-2012 01:06 AM

I've a weird smell come from the AC When I'm WOT for a few seconds...

Are you abusing the clutch? No smells from my fr-s.. Had it on the circuit at 100 miles on the odo. Maybe try and locate the smell. Show the dealer?

Motopythons 07-06-2012 01:25 AM

Normal. Have it on my 2012 impreza, smelt it during frs test drive.

Dimman 07-06-2012 01:41 AM

It's not the smell of victory?

BMWDavid 07-06-2012 06:35 AM

I've noticed a smell of rotten eggs. Its very light but right after a nice pull up to 6,000 rpm in third/fourth gear I get a slight odor.

I believe its coming from the exhaust and somehow getting sucked into car.

Bg8780 07-06-2012 09:38 AM

I agree with ahausheer, I had the same smell coming from a 3.6l V6 Genesis Coupe when I test drove it HARD. Only had 150mi on the ODO so that makes sense. I don't think it's anything to worry about. Needless to say I bought a BRZ instead of the GC. :-)

ill86 07-06-2012 11:05 AM

Hydrogen Sulfide from the catalytic converter or possibly the battery. I wouldn't classify it as "normal" though.. I'm not implying it doesn't happen, but it doesn't happen 100%.

mRdeMs83 07-06-2012 12:53 PM

Awesome thanks for the response. The smell doesn't smell bad or like something going bad, just started to notice now since I have driving a bit harder. When I go in to dealership this weekend I'll have them look and then post results. Thanks peeps.

Not that I'm abusing the clutch at least I don't think so. Just when I start going through 3rd on up at 6k after so down I notice it.

Mr. Mcoupe 07-06-2012 12:58 PM

Did you run over a plastic bag? Look under the car for any melted plastic. Of course, this smell would remain after the car is shut down/parked so I am probably wrong.

blu_ 07-06-2012 01:01 PM

Most new cars get a bit smelly. Between cats breaking in and factory coatings or lubes placed on engine components.

Gen 07-06-2012 05:01 PM

Mine does it as well. Smells a bit like clutch

This is what I feel I am smelling...will keep a nose out for it, I've only just got 48kms on the car so could be just some oils/etc from the factory burning off...

SprayedBigCube 07-07-2012 06:47 PM

That's exactly what mine smells like - burnt clutch.

If all our clutches fail at 1200 miles, we'll know why. :D

The smell has gone away now, or at least, I can't smell it anymore.

RWD-boxer 07-07-2012 07:31 PM

I have the smell it's like nail polish remover

BMWDavid 07-07-2012 10:35 PM

I've noticed a reduction in the strength of the odor over the last couple of hundred miles. I'm at 1500 miles now and hardly notice the odor now.

I was thinking the same thing. I had a plastic burning smell during break in on my FR-s smelled alittle too strong to be break in had it up on the lift the other day to do an oil change and sure enough melted plastic on the center pipe.

Lonewolf 07-07-2012 11:39 PM

Rotten egg smell is the catalytic converter. Many new cars give off strange odors in the first few hundred miles as everything is breaking in, things are burning off, and chemicals evaporate and dissipate...fairly normal.

***My favorite smell is the half-melted plastic bag stuck on the exhaust smell :)

What was the source of the plastic? Was it something from the car, or like, some plastic bag you "picked up" while driving?

Touge Monster 07-08-2012 03:41 PM

It was a plastic bag that stuck to the exhaust pipe it happens all the time out here in the city not uncommon to see a few cars a month coming into my dealership with platic bags burned onto the exhaust pipe.

Brimford 07-08-2012 03:51 PM

Never personally changed a clutch myself, but i was told when you order an after market clutch there is a residue you have to remove from the clutch that is on it from the factory before you install it. Its apparently to keep them from rusting? Either way i wonder if maybe all that residue maybe wasn't cleaned and could be producing the smell? Just a thought.

mRdeMs83 07-12-2012 10:23 PM

Smell has calmed down so I assume it was factory oils. Didnt make it to dealership last weekend so this weekend I will be out there.....on the up I just got my personel plates in!!! yay!

Ebay 07-14-2012 03:36 AM

Mine had that smell when I sped out of the dealership. 1,100 miles on it now, haven't smelled it lately.

SprayedBigCube 07-14-2012 07:38 AM

Got about 800 miles now. Smell went away a couple hundred miles ago.

eriktherod 07-16-2012 02:39 AM

I get faint whiffs of it after spirited driving, especially with the windows down. Pretty sure it's just normal since I'm not riding the clutch or dumping it so it can't be that.

Margovincent_22x 07-19-2012 10:55 AM

I think its common, I own a 07' WRX and it does have a smell reving 6-7k. 5years of service w/o problems.

Rossman 07-19-2012 11:58 AM

Just reporting back to this thread, now over 1000km's on the car and the smell is noticeably reduced if not gone altogether, so, for me at least I think was just the oils etc burning off during break-in...

I knew the NOS--you know, two of the big ones--were going to get me into trouble. Amateurs like me with a heavy foot just shouldn't use it.

I have the same smell as well, noticed it during a pretty long road trip (still under 1k miles).. guess it's normal

Yeah I get that smell too. I was thinking it was new car smell, but I realized it was shifting related. It reduced a lot as I drive it more, but it's a little concerning the fact this is my first MT car

gmookher 09-07-2012 05:40 PM

I oddly smell more clutch than I'd like
