FR-S - - Real Info

So I will save you all quite a bit of drama and frustration. As it works out, Scion, like Subaru, has a limited number of cars to deal with this year. For each car sold, each dealership gets two cars allotted for each one sold and the number of cars made this year is as restricted as Subaru as a 3:1 ratio as known on the sales webesites (cite insideline). On that same level, each dealership can basically trade a manual for a manual and an automatic for an automatic. At the end of the day I have dealt with literally ever single issue that is possible with Scion and payment down so trust me, this is the situation.

So in my young, but somewhat legit (in my mind) opinion, let me say this: There are honestly not that many cars Scions out there (for what you want). Yes, you can order a Subaru, and they are brilliant but they do weigh and cost slightly more. At the end of the day, and for what it is, Scion is really nearing the end of what they have for the rest of the year. Take this as it is, the next model may very well have some upgrades (though on that I know nothing).

As far as I know that is the absolute truth and I have gone though hell to get this info back. I do hope this is helpful for you as I've put a depost down in April and I will not get my car back until mid August.

So Cal also had huge allocations compared to other places. I am in Portland and have yet to see another Fr-s or BRz... ever. The only ones I see from the area are on this forum. Also, out of the 4 dealerships that sell Scion they are still requiring deposits and a wait period.

Same, I literally had three dealerships contact me about them getting a BRZ in this week and wanting me to come look at it. I guess no one wants sports cars in my area. It seems a lot of places have trouble finding them though.

Perhaps this post is more for the areas outside that allocation zone, but as far as I know, it's a battle trying to get the car you want unless you are down with any color and with an automatic.

ZmZMWagon 07-06-2012 12:10 AM

You can find the car you want, don't let dealers fool you. Of course you would have to pay to have that particular car shipped to you.

Dealership is Wheeling Subaru in West Virginia, stated it was a limited edition and would be there tomorrow. However, it's across the country for you if you're in So Cal.

Maybe they not manual? I think more people interested in manual trans. Or could be the color .or a bad dealership

Pscylo 07-06-2012 12:33 AM

It is very area dependent I think....They sell like hot cakes in the Phoenix area...The dealer I got mine at had allocation for 10 for this year (from what I was told), and that I know, has moved 7 of those already.

raphymartinez 07-06-2012 12:33 AM

There are 72 Toyota dealerships in the Boston region (not all sell Scion but the vast majority do) and in this last allocation which ran on tuesday night there were 20 FR-S' to give, so obviously a lot of stores won't be receiving any. Scion allocation only runs once per month as opposed to Toyota's which runs twice per.
I had one FR-S left on the lot and it got sold today. Won't have any again for a few weeks :(

Didn't like a few members drive like 800+ miles to get their car? Be lucky the car was made in Japan and not here

Dude. I went through probably more heck than you. All you said is true, but I can take you one step further. The dealers are withholding some truth. The fact is the car you want is out there and close to you. And the dealer may even know where it is at. But he doesn't want to tell you because in order for him to get it, he has to pull strings on a trade with the dealer that has it. The problem is the dealers own the cars. Not Scion, not Toyota, not Subaru. The dealer owns the cars. So even though he has access to a database that tells him where you can go to buy your car, why would he tell you? That means some other dealer is going to get the profit on the sale. He is going to say it will take 3 or 4 months to get the car, because that's how long it takes to order one from Japan. Your best bet is if you can find a friendly dealer or just cold call around every dealer in your area until you find the car you want. You'll have a lot of ticked off dealers that really want to make a sale, but it will work. The other way is just chill till your car shows up which will save you a lot of headache in trying to find one. Trust me man.

Best of luck :)

False. Most of my local dealers have 2 or 3 frs in stock. Idk why your waiting.

Gresham Scion had a Hot Lava Auto on their lot Tuesday.

Strongly agreed. I just google all dealers in the area and write to them one by one.

P.S. the FRS is not that rare. There is one blue MT sitting in my town for at least 3 weeks. (JF1ZNAA12D1702221)

Definitely agree that the FRS isn't that rare. Though it seems that the BRZ limiteds are hard to come by. Becker Subaru by my house got a limited and a premium last week sometime, and the limited is already gone and off their website's inventory. Bummer...

86boyAF1 07-06-2012 09:43 AM

Right now, there are 12 brz/fr-s vehicles available in the Sea-tac area of washington, and 17 available with 50 miles of my tiny New England home town. Mostly in the Keene, NH area. These RWD cars don't sell great in snowy states, so focus your search on cold states near you.

According to autotrader.com there are 500 cars sitting on dealer lots across the country, right now.

The Autotrader, Cars.com, and even dealership website listings cannot really be relied upon for accurate information in my opinion. The new inventories often contain items like reserved cars, vehicles that are not yet in inventory, or cars that have been previously sold. A couple weeks back I visited KC where there were 11 cars listed at 5 dealerships. I visited the 5 dealerships and saw 5 cars, including a sold car. Certainly there are some cars sitting on lots, including manuals, but personally I consider website new inventory information rather unreliable, especially for a car in the first few months after release.

What? I just talked to my friend who's a Scion sales manager and he traded his first 6MT Argento for a 6AT Firestorm that a customer wanted. Dealers can swap for whatever they want. Unless you're talking allocation?

I went through the same thing. All but two of the BRZ Limited's I wanted were already sold even though they were on those web sites. When I found mine, and put down my deposit, the car disappeared from the dealer's site and the price went to NOT LISTED on the above sites.

Now that I have my car, I can only keep my fingers crossed for all of you that are still waiting. Take the matter into your own hands though, call every dealer you can! I went about 600+ miles to get mine. It was well worth it!

Draco-REX 07-06-2012 12:20 PM

Do your homework and extend your search area to surrounding states or further. Track down dealerships and call call call. They are out there, you just have to find them because the dealerships won't do it for you.

Just last Friday, a DGM BRZ Premium MT was up for grabs. A couple weeks before that a guy I know bought a Raven FR-S MT straight off a dealer's lot. Some people here have driven 1000 miles to get the car they want. They are out there. It's just going to take a little work on your part.

Skyhound 07-06-2012 02:11 PM

It is VERY area-specific on how much FR-S's and BRZ's sell. The closest BRZ limited to me has already sold but there are like ten WRB Limiteds in Manual in the Long Island area alone for NY. I think FR-S's are actually out-selling them.

I imagine it's because most people would skip out on a RWD Subaru when we have pretty bad snow storms around here during the winter. People get the FR-S because Toyota doesn't have many AWD cars. If they came in looking for a Corolla then they might as well "upgrade" to the sporty FR-S.

There is also the internet and autotrader. You can go each scion website and search dealer inventory. Or do a search on autotrader.

It only cost like $600 to ship a car across country. Check the dealers up north.

digital_assassin 07-06-2012 04:28 PM

I decided to hunt one down last weekend and it took a few hours of phone calls but I located 2 MT's that were within 300 miles. Thankfully one was exactly the color I was looking for. There were about 16 listed on Autotrader within that radius and every dealer I called said those were either already sold or were customers cars that were ordered. They were all telling me if I ordered one that it would be here in a few weeks. I found what I wanted so I'm set and only time will tell if this was all just smoke and mirrors to build hype.
