Anyone running square 215/40r18 on 18x7.5?
Anyone have pics of 18x7.5 +35 square with 215/40r18?
Would my speedometer be off? This is on stock suspension. Also, any issues I may encounter? What's so different of running 225's vs 215's? Thanks. I'm new to this. |
Read the specs on the stock tire, they are right around 24.7 diameter, on a 7inch width rim. .5 inch is about 13mm wider, 10mm wider tire sounds logical doesn't it? Read the spec's on the 215/40 you are looking at.
My advice would be to get 225/40-18 which is right around 25inches. 1-2% wont make a noticeable difference, and that extra meat is good for grip and comfort(sidewall height). And it would also give you a little more rim protection from the tire. 225/40. DO IT. Trust. 215/40's look like rubber bands. |

Thank you guys.
What I mean is, would a square 215 wear quicker than 225/215 staggered? I'm looking at some 18x7.5 and I hear they rub in front. That's why our twins come staggered. I DD, so I don't want quick wear or rubbing on u turns. I see the speedometer will stay same. |
Don't run a 215/225 staggered; there's really no point. If you're running staggered, try to jump three sizes, to keep the tire's outside diameter the same. So, 215/245, 225/255, 235/265, that kind of thing. With wheel widths expanding accordingly. A very popular setup is 18x8.5 with 225 front and 18x9.5 with 255 rear.
Also, our cars come with a square setup. 17x7+48 with 215/45 on all four corners. Running a staggered setup will induce a little understeer, but not terrible. Will also cause slightly worse mileage, due to more heavier tire. If you want a staggered look because there's more space in the rear wheel wells, that's what spacers are for. 215 square, 215/225, or 225 square mileage and wear will all be more a factor of your driving style than the tire width. I would personally run 225 square on a 7.5" wheel. If you want to run staggered, try to find the same wheel in an 8.5" width and run 255s on the back. |

Don't stagger. Our cars don't come staggered. Staggered is a bad idea because you can't rotate tires, so they would actually wear faster. 225's should last longer as the load rating is higher and you are putting less stress/weight on them. 225/40-18 is the BEST CHOICE. You are over thinking it. The hard part is finding the right tire with the right balance of price/grip/life/safety(rain)/noise/comfort. DO IT and enjoy it. Trust. |
Thank you. I may just swap out my trd springs for the stock ones I had just so I feel good. Hoping to pull the trigger on the TRD 18x7.5's. I'll go with 225's

The TRD North American option 18" wheels for the FR-S are staggered, and this is claimed (at least by my Toyota dealer) to be required for clearance reasons up front.
I confirmed that this is the "official company line" with a friend in the business. Whether Toyota is right, or some on the forum are right, the only way to get the TRD 18" wheel package from Toyota on a new FR-S (and therefore, financed and warrantied as part of the total purchase) is in a staggered configuration. |
Here's an 18x8+35 with 245's on it. OEM wheels are always more conservative than they really need to be.

Yes @ Shinigami301.
I've read possibly every thread to date regarding this clearance issue. This is why TRD US has 18x7 front and 18x7.5 rear. However, I've found a fella who has a square setup of 18x7.5's. I am looking at it, and was concerned i'd rub in front, but thought with 215 all around I could get away with it. ...hmmnm Then again, I doubt I U-turn more than twice a week... so worrying about rubbing shouldnt be too bad over time. Anything else you guys [experts compared to me] recommend if I have a square 18x7.5 all around setup? |
Don't think why you can't. 0.0 stock setup in Japan for Brz tS is 18x7.5 with 225/40/18 PPS. (Thou only lowered by 15 mm)

I don't think it will be that much different since it's the springs that's different if I remember right..... but FRS do have softer front. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk |
Thanks guys. I'll stick to 225's then! Hopefully have them in a week if all goes as planned! If not, I'll be a sad panda.

If you're on TRD springs (or any other springs) the FRS vs BRZ suspension difference is null and void. The difference is in the spring rate.
You'll be fine on TRD springs with the wheels and tires you're looking at. Refer to the pics I linked earlier, then mentally push the wheel in by 1/4 inch and the shoulder of the tire in by 1 cm. And he's much lower than you will be. |
