Oil filter torque?
 

Hey guys,

Just wondering is it really necessary to torque down an oil filter? On the genuine filter it says to torque it down 12~16Nm? I thought hand tight was enough for filters? If so how would you go about getting a wrench to torque it...tried searching to no avail. Also would the drain plug need to be torqued as well? Think i saw in the DIY section its at 28.9.

Hand tight is fine for oil filters.

12 to 16 nm would be about hand tight anyway.


Just make sure the drain plug crushes the washer. Don't over do it.

are you doing it or the dealership/oil change place?

If its an oil change place/dealer-about 150ft.lbs should do



NOTE THIS IS A JOKE. They always seem to put oil filters/bolts WAAAAY too tight.

Its bad when you need to use an extension on your socket to loosen the drain plug.

Yep, one hand tight is sufficient ........ unless your hands are greasy and/or you are a weakling ...... then one hand plus two fingers and thumb of the other hand is good....... :D

Snug, then 1/4 turn.

Touching + 3/4 turn on the filter

When the impact stops is standard torque spec if you take your car to a shop

Or are you doing this yourself?

The idea of using an impact on an oil drain bolt makes me shudder...

Gasket contact --> 3/4 additional turn or so.

As for how to get a torque wrench on, it'd be with a tool like this:

How about using an impact gun to remove spark plugs?

I shit you not I saw it happen and saw the aftermath.

No need, socket wrench is all you need..

You missed the joke.

No one in their right mind would use an impact gun to remove spark pulgs.
The aftermath I saw was two completely removed spark plugs with the threads intact from the head. One broke in half, the other some how was lucky it came out normally. This was a dude working on a 240. Previous Honda owner.

IMHO ........ most people would be better off, when working on automobiles, to keep the damn impact (power) tools, used for fasteners, away from the car ..........:mad0260:

Dear God, yes!

I agree for the most part, but used wisely (like on decades old chassis bolts and such) it can make what would be drudgery into an absolute joy. Now, people who use impacts to tighten anything on the other hand... :mad0260:

@Tcoat got me dead to rights. Here I was thinking "What's he talking about torque? It's an oil filter blah blah!" I've been overdue for a good bitch slap. :D

As the others have said, although I typically do "snug" then another 1/4-1/2 turn.
