Power lag in 2nd gear. Sporadic revs at idle

Just got the car. 30,000km. 12,000 miles or so. My idle bounces all over the place especially when cold. From 200-1500. Also everytime i shift to 2nd no matter what rpm im at it lags so bad. Like it struggles miserably for 2 seconds then kicks it. Kinda ruins the experience. Anybody know if these are recalls or issues the dealer can fix for free? Reprog the ecu or something?

turtlefeeder 06-06-2016 04:24 AM

First thing I'd try is disconnecting batteries over night, let it relearn. If issue so persist get or borrow an obd2 reader and diagnose the car. Still not working? Send it to an auto shop for (maybe free if theyfeel like taking a quick look) estimate/check (if you want to know for sure the problem, send to toyota they'll be more than happy to take your money).

I've seen something similar too this, if the car was mod than returned to shock to sell and they forgot to reflash to stock tune, engine will have a hard time.. such as your issue, from what you're saying it looks like it's in loop mode. BTW I doubt it's a defect, just saying..

Warrantee?

take it to the dealer.

Ashikabi 06-06-2016 11:56 AM

Take it to the dealer. This is what warranty is for

Summerwolf 06-06-2016 12:19 PM

The lag sounds like torque dip. LOL

Maybe JK.

strat61caster 06-06-2016 05:32 PM

Sounds like shitty mawds, a dirty air filter or throttle body, a clogged or busted line somewhere, maybe even a DI seal failure. Could be anything. If you don't know how to check for those things a trip to the dealership it will have to be, good luck.

Norinradd 06-06-2016 07:58 PM

Bahah. Not the torque dip no. Its just when im initially in second gear. As if the gear slips a bit then catches. The car hasnt had an aftermarket tune. And yeah i can do it all myself. But everything looks good. Ive read on other pages the issue and there was apparently a dealer re flash. Not a recall but they recognize the issue and re programmed it to fix.

ryoma 06-06-2016 08:12 PM

if the idle RPM jumps around, you might have air pockets in your cooling system. try bleeding it and see if it helps.

Speed2th 06-06-2016 08:33 PM

Did you buy used car? I would start with checking the MAF sensor from the intake, and all intake pipe connection for leak. Also check the intake box and element, maybe you have some foreign element in there.

Packofcrows 06-07-2016 05:13 PM

If you remove maf sensor wear gloves. Many members somehow have messed theirs up.

Clean throttle and check intake. Tighten it up.

Norinradd 06-08-2016 12:16 AM

Yes its used. Aftermarket intake, headers and exhaust. So the dealer was aware of the issue and apparently there is some new software for the rough idle. They downloaded it. Havent stallled since but its still odd. Ill check alll the intake connections. Believe i have some sensor cleaner at home too.

turtlefeeder 06-08-2016 12:18 AM

Problem solve Ned a retune lol probably that header

Norinradd 06-08-2016 01:52 AM

Yah always i have read that injen air intakes cause a sputtery idle and stalling 50% of the time, whn not ran with a tune. Any recommended tunes? Is it cheaper to buy plug and play or go to a tuner shop

turtlefeeder 06-08-2016 02:02 AM

Nuuu Nuuu nu its not the intake lol. I'm running injen CAI right now with a cat back no issues from that because i keep factory header, planning to go with Works turbocharger soon than I'll get their ecu tuning. The issue is you have an aftermarket/performance header which increase air flow in your engine, it's more air than the ECU can know what to do with so it tries to compensate by throwing in more gas. So you idle roughly and power isn't constant on the throttle.

Factory header =Factory tune so it does what is intended to do, but aftermarket header+ factory tune= more than ecu can handle in factory spec. Like getting alignment after you swap for aftermarket coilovers, new item needs new setting to make it run normal or better
Hope this explanation put tuning into prospective

There's many tuner check it out via Google 😊 after tuning it soul is run Nuuu problem

Norinradd 06-08-2016 01:59 PM

Ah yes makes perfect sense turtle.

Norinradd 06-08-2016 02:00 PM

That was supposed to be thumbs up not "????" Lol

I'm really not sure what the hell you're talking about, because it doesn't make any sense at all.

OP if any of the parts are the issue it's the intake, the header has no bearing on how much air flows through the engine. People run aftermarket headers on the stock tune with no issue.

The intake, on the other hand, has a lot to do with how the MAF reads the incoming air and can indeed throw off the AF mix if not scaled correctly.

Cheapest route to tune is to use an Openflash Tablet. I however am not completely sure this is your issue. Do you have a CEL? It sounds like the most likely culprit is a vacuum leak if it's not the intake. A tune will definitely help you get more power out of your mods even if it's not the issue, so it's not a waste of money if it doesn't turn out to be the problem.

I'd still look carefully for a vacuum leak and take a log if you can unless you were planning to get a tune anyways.

I have no cel. No lights on my dash what so ever. Is there a way to test for vacum leak other than just listening for air leaks while cars running? The motor is spotless. 10,000 miles. So i dont see the maf or throttle body being dirty...? As i said i brought to dealer and they reprogrammed ecu for the idle. They were aware of the issue on many stock frs's but it didnt help

You can spray starter fluid along the intake path and around vacuum hoses, sometimes it works sometimes it doesn't. Another option is to take it to a shop and have it smoke tested. As far as I'm aware, the only vacuum hose that should have been touched is the PCV that routes into the intake right before the throttle body. That would be the first place I'd check.

If you're seeing others have the same issue with the Injen intake, it is quite possibly the problem. If you have access to stock parts to put back on the car, you could answer your question quickly.

So take it back to the dealer. This is why you have a warranty.

And to the guy above: headers do affect flow. Is it causing this problem? Maybe not but engines really only do one thing, flow. Flows in, flows out. Headers actually make really good power on these engines because they flow much better than stock. Again, might not be the problem that's how it is. Now I have seen elsewhere people had maf problems with the Injen intake.

Norinradd 06-09-2016 04:06 AM

Yes im reading more and more on the intake and i dont have a stock one. I cant really bitch to the dealersip either as theyll say the cars good and blame iton aftermarket parts. I have a feeling its the intake. I dont have a stock one to put on it. Dealership would want to much.

Norinradd 06-09-2016 04:13 AM

Ill try a vacum test. I heard a propane torch was the safest method. Beside smoke test

turtlefeeder 06-09-2016 04:14 AM

I highly doubt it's the intake but You'll still have issues even if you swap injen CAI back to oem because of the aftermarket header. Just go get it tuned with whatever you have on than you'll be set, unless you want warranty (if it's still during warranty period) than you'll have to definitely remove that header.

Ps I took my car to dealer with intake still in engine bay and they didn't say a thing when opening the hood lol besides I believe injen made it to work with oem maf/settings.
