DeshuL's FRS Adventures (STX/DD)

Hello everyone! My name is Chad, I'm 20 years old (don't worry, everything is 100% paid for by me) and I'm a car nut. Here's some backstory on my car addiction.

I currently own a 2006 MX5 that I now plan on turning into a full track car. I've spent the last 6 months doing a completely built 2.5L, which I'm going to turbo once I sort it out (I need to tear down the engine again bc piston ring gap). Here's my build thread on that: http://forum.miata.net/vb/showthread.php?t=595843
And my most recent picture :

I autocrossed that car in STR for two years, and was the 2015 STR champion in my region.

I've always really liked the FT86's, and considered them a cousin of the Miata. So naturally when I decided to get another car, it was the top of the list. My FRS will be delivered within the next few days. It's a 2016 Steel 6MT (of course).

Once I take delivery I'll post up some pictures, and include some detail with the modifications I will make.

Stay tuned!

Whooooh! The car has arrived at the dealership! I received these pictures from my salesman today!!

Unfortunately the weather is absolute crap for the next several days, so I won't be able to fully enjoy her.

Of course. She's actually replacing my Miata for autocross. STX here I come!

Bowen 05-31-2016 02:51 PM

Congrats on the buy!

What kind of mods do you have planned? :D

NyC Zn6 05-31-2016 03:58 PM

Any vids with the Miata in action?

stevemp5 05-31-2016 04:06 PM

The immediate goals, in order:
  • Feal 441 Coilovers 450/450
  • Front sway bar (not sure which one yet)
  • 17x9 +35 RPF1's w/ 245/40 RE71R
  • Borla UEL Header
  • Invidia N1 cat back

Probably some misc. mods in between, that's what this thread is for

I don't have any with the built 2.5L, because I just got it installed, and since driving it roughly 80 miles I discovered the pistons rings are woncky. Most likey bad gapping.

But here's a video of it in STR trim:

Quick Update:

I've driven about 350 miles now, and the car is great. It handles superb from the factory, even on those crappy Michelin tires. I'd say the only thing I don't like is the gearbox noise. Man that thing clank's and whines a TON! I'm going to change the fluid in it hoping that helps.

Now onto the fun stuff :D

I've made the first round of purchases!
  • 17x9 +35 Gunmetal RPF1's
  • 245/40 Bridgestone RE71R's
  • Feal 441 Road Race Coilovers 8k/7k
  • Strano 22mm Front Sway
  • Borla UEL Header
  • FT86 V1 Catback
  • Moto East EcuTek (I've had this for my NC for a while)
  • Valenti Helix sequential tail lights

I changed over the licence plate lights to LED, and I'm also doing the dome light :w00t:

PICTURES will of course come when I install everything aprox. 2 weeks!

DeshuL 06-05-2016 05:25 PM

So I'd really like to take some decent pictures for this thread, so I bought a 50mm f/1.8 lens for my old Nikon D80. I used to love taking car pictures, but I haven't touched my camera in over a year. I figured I'd try to fine tune my pictures with this build.

Here are a few test shots with the new lens in my driveway. Don't worry, I realize they are garbage.

Notice the protective plastic on the pedals, I'm going to try and keep those on as long as possible.

Nice pictures, I've gotten so used to seeing (and taking) pictures from a phone that when you see a real DSLR photo you realize how much more depth and clarity they have. I need to take mine out too.

Sweet miata by the way!

DeshuL 06-06-2016 06:32 PM

So my tires were delivered today! The RPF1's will be in tomorrow! I won't mount them until my suspension is complete.

I will be autocrossing the car in 100% stock condition on Saturday. I'm going to make sure I drive enough to get to the 1000 mile break in! :happyanim:

The following Saturday there is another autocross in Charlotte, I would LOVE to have all my parts on by then and race in STX, but unfortunately I'll be out of town all next week for work so it'll be difficult.

The good stuff :party0030:

So this is definitely not how I imagine the first page of this build thread would go... On my way to work today, I was stopped in some traffic, and out of no where BOOOM... An older man was going 45mph and hit 2 cars behind me, causing a 6 car pile up, we were all completely stopped. I'm almost 100% the car is totaled. It was leaking both oil and coolant.

I went to the ER with some slight neck pain, thankfully it's just whip lash.

I'll keep this update with what I find out from insurance.

And of course when I get home, I'm greeted by these...

At least I'll have all the parts ready for my next FRS lol

Kiwis 06-07-2016 10:27 PM

Horrible to see a brand new car wrecked like that, hoping you're alright mate.

tumbla.jr 06-07-2016 10:30 PM

I think i'd cry if it was me..

DeshuL 06-18-2016 10:42 PM

Here's the new one, I can't pick it up till the other one is officially totaled.

Bowen 06-19-2016 12:12 AM

Man that accident looks like it sucked. Seemed your FRS got the worst of it. Did the truck receive any damage?

DeshuL 06-20-2016 11:55 PM

Just got the call today, it's officially totaled. Unfortunately, I lost the down payment I made and the first month payment as well... I'm going to try and work with my insurance company to reclaim that money.

But now I'm closer to getting back into an FR-S.

When I get back in town, I'll be able to pickup the RS 2.0, and install all the parts that I've collected for the past few weeks!

DeshuL 07-01-2016 02:26 AM

So I was able to pickup the RS 2.0 today! I spared NO time getting to work on it!

Here she is at home!

About an hour later......
http://i.imgur.com/X6axaOph.jpg

Borla UEL and FT-86 Speed Factory V1 catback are now installed.
http://i.imgur.com/akB1LF9h.jpg

Tomorrow I'll do the coilovers, sway bar, tail lights, toyota emblems, and maybe a good alignment.

Some extra goodies also! (the place that mounted them fucked up every single wheel though, they are all scuffed, i'll post pics later)

DeshuL 07-01-2016 07:35 PM

I'll continue with the progress that I've made today.

Let's take a second to appreciate the level of grip she's gonna have.... :eyebulge:
http://i.imgur.com/Ly1n22Kh.jpg

I installed the Feal 441's.

As well as whiteline endlinks.

Camber plates are convenient.

Seems you came out with a better car from the accident. Car's looking good. Definitely a money saver installing yourself.

Not only that, but working on cars is a passion for me. Being able to modify and make the car MY own is so gratifying. I enjoy being able to make these changes myself.

DeshuL 07-22-2016 09:29 PM

Finally after receiving the correct bushings, I installed the strano 22mm front sway bar. :party0030:

I also ordered some new wheels and tires. 17x9 +36 Volk TE37V-SL's with 255/40 RE71R's. Can't wait for those to arrive.

asdf 03-24-2017 05:50 PM

No :( they were all sold out when I went to purchase!

Only Updates: I bought another set of RPF1s with 255/40 BFG Sport Comp2's just to daily drive on. And I also got a new license plate....

DeshuL 05-22-2017 09:51 PM

Well I noticed the sound of an exhaust leak last week, so I investigated today and this immediately stood out to me. This is a Borla UEL that I've had on the car since last July.

http://i.imgur.com/1jCxaPV.jpg

Borla is giving me a full refund, so I am replacing it with a Tomei UEL.

DeshuL 08-25-2017 05:00 PM

I redid my brakes and got some Carbotech AX6's. I'm excited to see how these will do at nationals in two weeks!
