Sun shades.. any particular recommended ones for this car?

Trying to find a good sunshade with the hot summer months coming up ( the kind you place in windshield space when you park your car). I was thinking about a TRD branded one but can't really find any. So what do you guys use, if anything?

HunterGreene 05-25-2016 12:39 PM

I got one a while back, unfortunately I don't recall where I got it from (Amazon or AutoAnything.com, I think). It is definitely worth it, especially further down south where you are. It'll be quite a bit cooler than it would otherwise be. Also keeps parts that you need to handle (Steering wheel and shift knob) from being boiling hot.

I'd suggest looking for ones that are cut to our windshields, and have the metallic/foil part that faces the outside. Good luck and stay cool.

I got the OEM BRZ item from a dealer thru Amazon for $65ish I think---my dash was getting soft above the a/c vents and I didn't want it to pop up. Problem solved! It comes with a sheath for storing during the winter months.

HunterGreene 05-25-2016 12:56 PM

I should point out that the one I got was $29.95 + shipping

The OEM folding one is the best. Also, get your front window tinted with Llumar Air 80 or something similar. It's clear, but it has 99+% UV blockage. That makes a HUGE difference in interior temperatures.

I have the Subaru OEM folding sun shade. It fits the windshield perfectly. I can't really imagine any other shade being better. It does display "Subaru" across the shade in big letters through the windshield, so FR-S owners may not want it. I would assume there's a Scion/Toyota equivalent.

I also have ceramic tint on all the windows except the windshield, and it does do a great job of reducing heat and UV.

I bought a Covercraft off of eBay. Custom made in the US and made one at a time. It has held up very well and the Blue goes great with Raven.

Heat is from infrared, not UV. Cutting UV does help reduce degradation of the interior, however.

I think I got a similar one, dont remember it being that pricey, though

RichardsFRS 05-25-2016 01:22 PM

I use the folding kind that is two pieces. Had them for years

MrDinkleman 05-25-2016 01:47 PM

I buy the aftermarket ones that are sold at the dealer's parts department (I don't remember the name of the company). They are custom fit and roll up. They have the mirror-like mylar surface so maximum reflectance. Not as convenient to store as the fold up kind. Maybe I'll replace mine with one of those.

I don't have one for the two days a year I would use it but will state that the one Gram has worked very well in the Vegas heat. I only thought I was going to die from his driving not the sun and I don't do heat well.

Hey, I have to drive like that because everyone around me drives like that and I don't want to get hit. It's not my fault.

Probably.

This is the same folding shade as OEM, but without the logo. Also cheaper.

Probably.

Actually I rented a car last time we were there based entirely on my experience riding with you. The ride wasn't nearly a scary as I expected so I felt comfortable in driving. It really wasn't that bad even along the strip.

The strip is mostly stop and go and watching out for drunk pedestrians in rave outfits and pasties like last time.

+1 for the covercraft. Had mine for 2 years now, and it's still in good shape and rejects an amazing amount of heat. Quality and fit are 9.5/10.

Ugh. I hate driving on the Strip. Whenever we go, we just taxi everywhere and leave my car in the parking garage of the casino we are staying at...

We usually fly and then just take shuttles and cabs but the last time around I wanted to travel around to places where no shuttles went. We also were staying at Sam's Town so a car was much more practical. I really had no issues getting around and was quite surprised.

The OEM one is fantastic. Worth the money.

xFury 05-25-2016 04:16 PM

Hovercraft for me. Have a Dashcam so the cut out is perfect for it.

Worth every penny.

I would recommend NOT using the folding mylar/shiny silver ones found at Autozone. I purchased one last year to cool off the interior as it heated up here last spring. In about that time the sewn edges of 'felt' like material started to fall apart due to UV exposure and left mucho 'dandruff' on the dash and anywhere I moved the sunshade to.

Purchasing a new OEM sunshade and trunklid liner for the RS 2.0 today from Subaru Online Parts.

My Heatshield (via Amazon) USA made roll-up has been great for the last couple years.
