mods you love and hate

Like the title says, are there any mods that you regret getting and spending money on? What's your favorite mod that you've gotten and thought it was money well spent?

ZionsWrath 05-25-2016 08:14 AM

Regret staggered 18" wheels

I like my ap sprint kit

weederr33 05-25-2016 08:36 AM

Love that I added a supercharger. Hate that I added a supercharger.

SUB-FT86 05-25-2016 08:44 AM

This will be a fun thread!

Tcoat 05-25-2016 09:07 AM

Well Guff and Dave are pretty cool but that ichi sometimes....
Don't know the others well enough to have formed an opinion.

soulreapersteve 05-25-2016 09:23 AM

Favorite mod that was money well spent?

Driver mod. :burnrubber:

Tectoniic 05-25-2016 10:25 AM

Simultaneous love/hate relationship with all mods. I love what they do for the car but I hate not having the complete piece of mind of a stock car with a warranty.

Hot-Lava_Dave 05-25-2016 10:30 AM

Haven't done too much yet, but I would say that the TRD catback was money well spent.

My most hated mod would have to be the small chips on the front bumper from all the highway driving I've been doing....

mixtape 05-25-2016 10:31 AM

If the love vs. hate includes installation of said mods, then:

I love my Valenti LED side markers but hated installing them. Fuck those clips.

I just hit 7k miles, 6k of which are on the interstate. I had 3M paint protection film installed the second week I had the car and the front end is damn near flawless. I definitely recommend it!

What negative about the supercharger in your mind?

I feel like it was beneficial as far as ease of cleaning and keeping that "sheen". My car is kept outside all the time and get's a lot of random crap on it. Literally.

Mr.Impreza 05-25-2016 10:56 AM

Being my 3rd sports car, I've learned what I like and don't like so I haven't made any mistakes on this car.

My favorite mod on this car;
Fujitsubo Authorize R Catback Exhaust

A mod i hate, on this car none, but on the Subaru I have one.
Cusco Zero 2r Coilovers
Made the car drive like a rock and be horrible in the city. Even on the softest damping setting I couldn't drink a coffee without spilling everything everywhere.
Never will i get coils again. I think they are only worth it if you track. Which I don't lol

Atticus808 05-25-2016 11:01 AM

The only mod i have is an HKS air filter.

I save up for mods, then find it hard to justify spending it on my car rather than a vacation or investment lol

Yea I know what you mean, except I don't think it lasts nearly as long as they say it does.

What made you get the coilovers if you don't track the car?

hahaha. This is the same exact reason I don't have any mods to my car. It's like a endless money PIT. If you put money into mods, now there's more maintenance than usual and a higher chance of things to go wrong, it makes you want to drive it harder cause then what's the point of the mods, now you take it to the track, have your fun but then repair/replace everything in your car earlier. And don't forget you find out what else your car "needs" to improve after taking it to the track.

ZionsWrath 05-25-2016 11:19 AM

I see your point of view but I do like to enjoy some things now, who knows if I invest all my $ for later if I will even get to enjoy it later.

There was also something in your minds that made you spend the money on this car instead of a something like a Versa or Fit.

With modifying, I find it like a lot of things, less can be more. For example I wouldn't mind getting some legit suspension, sway bars, corner balancing, and bushings. But for that money I rather do more track time and improve myself with the basic mods I have on the car already.

Just need a realistic approach, honestly evaluate how much money you can spend. For me I don't have a significant other so spending $ on a track event is more enjoyment than going on some random vacation alone. Plus you get to play with some really nice people and cars.

Bowen 05-25-2016 11:50 AM

I have a love/hate relationship with my FT86SF V2 exhaust.

Love the way it sounds -

Hate that it's single exit.

Packofcrows 05-25-2016 11:54 AM

Love the hate I get from other drivers when they see me with cruise control all relaxed and nodding my head as I slowly but surely get to my destination with a smile.

Some even smile back, others rev and floor it. I can tell from the dark smoke coming from their exhaust.

exactly. i like my warranty. the FURTHEST i'll go is exhaust and wheels i think. if i get headers then i'll have to worry about a tune and ceramic coating. it isn't much but it's still money. and who knows how long i'll take before i even get an exhaust and wheels

true. everyone has their own interests and hobbies.

I always say to my wife that if i didn't have a car payment on my brz, we could pretty much go on a nice vacation every 3 months. but then she tells me she likes going on drives

I wanted to lower the car so I bought STI springs but my friends were car guys and kept telling me coils were better and they would install them for me. Plus we were young, I think I was 18-19 when I got them. Anyways, after that I never listened to them again LOL

I never bothered selling them because I knew I'd lose money, so I just kept them.

kch 05-25-2016 12:39 PM

Totally worth it:
-JDL UEL header
-Moto-East flex fuel kit
-RacerX oil cooler
-driver mod
-rexpeed convex side mirrors (no more blind spots!)

Regret:
-lightweight pulley set (never installed; sold at a loss)
-Raceseng 2" rear shock mounts (should've gone with 1")
-Hawk HP+ brake pads (too noisy for street, but overheat on track)

YESSSSS, getting rid of blind spots and obliterating torque dip with e85 were my best mods

Bowen 05-25-2016 12:51 PM

I would buy a flex fuel kit if I had access to E85 😞

That sucks. Looks like your only options are DC or Newport News. :(

Has anyone else gotten stone chips on the leading edge of the roof?
I have 2 (!) that sounded like bullet ricochets when I got them on the highway., and now one of them has oxidization/rust
I wonder if anyone was crazy enough to bra/coat the roof too.

As for my favourite mods:
-Intake and Exhaust combo because it made the car sound like a sports car
-MTEC springs, weighted shiftknob and TRD quickshifter to make shifting even more enjoyable (I blip/downshift just for the heck of it from time to time)

Most useless/regretted mods:
-the OEM-style rear diffuser
-possibly the stickier Pilot Super Sports
-Knock-off eBay "TRD" seatbelt pads (the damn things never stayed in place to keep the belt comfortable, and always managed to snag something)

Why do you hate that you added a supercharger? I am very curious to know if you found any kind of drawback from it. If I didn't have a wife that's exactly what I would add to my car.

I should have showed you my stone chip collection but it was raining.
I have stone/debris chips in places that you can only scratch your head how it got there. I have one on the rear fender right beside the trunk lid for crying out loud. Most hit with a velocity that sounded like gun shots so I can't even blame "bad paint" since most would have chipped paint on a tank. My best is the big divot in my front bumper from the flying tail light assembly. Nice groove but never damaged the paint one little bit.

i love every mod ive done to my car so far. lol.

I would have said Ichi and Dave are cool but Guff is kind of sketchy. Purely because he doesn't keep us updated on his various Supras and VTEC Mini. Inquiring minds want to know!

For myself, I love my drivetrain bushings and shift springs. They've completely changed the character of the car. I don't hate my tint, but I regret not getting it darker and I'm not looking forward to having it redone.

so far i have the front bumper, hood, and front fenders protected. thinking about getting the roof done too, especially after a piece of metal hit the windshield 2 inches from the top

The parts that I have clear-brad are:
Full front bumper
Full front fenders
Full hood
Full headlights
Full mirrors
Half-roof (this one matters to you). It's kept my roof completely safe on the interstate over these few months.

Norville Rogers 05-25-2016 01:55 PM

Usually keep mods to a minimum as I learned years ago that most are ultimately disappointing

So have fitted and seem worthwhile are

Grimmspeed hood struts
Team voodoo gear knob
OBD/torque app
Pressed numberplates

Waiting to go on are:

Passenger seat fire extinguisher mount
Oem rear mudguards. Possibly fronts

No negatives other than that my wallet is still in the ICU. Oh and I should have enjoyed being NA a little longer than 6 months lol.

The supercharger has no drawbacks. In fact I've had 0 problems with it. Just some minor tuning issues with my exhaust. It's just that it was a financial thing haha. Gotta pay to play as they say. Also, I was only naturally aspirated for 6 months before I got the supercharger. Of course, I bought the car with the intentions to add some sort of FI.

I should have never bought a lightweight pulley set. It was completely useless. That money could have gone into a lightweight flywheel, or an intake, or tires, or an HPDE course.

I want a supercharger really badly. Unfortunately I would probably lose my wife in the process. Its a very hard decision.... lol j/k I love my wife. I wish I could have both.
