Stalled while driving

First time this ever happened... I had just exited the freeway this morning on the way to work and my car lost power while driving. It seemed like it wasn't getting any fuel. It downshifted several times while in manual mode as it was just crawling along at this point. Each time I pressed on the gas, nothing would happen and my speed kept decreasing. I was able to pull over into an empty drive then it just shut down abruptly as I was slowing to a stop. This all happened fairly quickly. I still had electrical power even though it stalled. After a few tries I got it running again and it acted like nothing ever happened. I took it easy the rest of the way by keeping the RPMs low. Thank goodness it started up again as I wasn't in the best area of town.

Here is my setup: 2012 (Typo… 2013) AT FRS bought new [in 2012] and now has 30k miles, drop in filter, intake tube, Invidia N1 catback, OFT, and replaced the battery a few months ago. I'll plug in my OFT this evening when I get home and see if it throws any codes. I did check to see if it would start a few minutes ago and all sounded good.

last time that happened to me intake was disconnected (yours may be coming loose at some spot and causing the issue). check your fittings

2012 frs? They had those?

Thanks, I sure will check that out before driving home.

Ha! Yeah, didn't you know... Good catch on my typo... 2013, purchased in 2012.

Nice build. The spoiler looks good.

I'm hoping that I can make it to the Twisted Sisters route this summer.

Had you recently filled up with gas ...... ??

(back-in-the-day .... I would have called it vapor lock.)

No CEL?

Did you smell fuel in the cabin?

Nope. Quarter tank left.

Nothing showed up that I can recall. But, I may not of even noticed as i was in heavy traffic and was quickly looking for a place to pull over. Second thought was to make sure my S&W was ready. Ha!

Also, no ECU codes displayed on OFT.

One side of the intake tube clamp was a little loose. But, not much. The tube was still snug and in proper alignment. So I tightened it up about 1/2 maybe 3/4 of a turn before heading home. This could of been the issue as I tested the acceleration well. No problems.

Thanks everyone. I'll see how it does tomorrow and chime back in.

Well, I wouldn't put your S&W away just yet.

I don't see how the intake "sucking a little air" past the MAF, would stop the engine from running ...... ??

I'm also going to say that's not it.

Mine mysteriously died once but the circumstances were quite different. That's why I asked about the fuel smell.

Staying tuned.

Get an OBD2 reader and the Torque app. then you can watch the fuel rail pressure in case this happens again. There a LOT of things that can cause a car to stall out and Torque can help you watch a lot of things and get a better idea of what system failed. Fuel comes to mind first, but that's a guess.

Just ordered on Amazon Prime the ieGeek WiFi Wireless OBD-II Mini ELM327 OBD2. Also got the Ultra Flat Low Profile Extension Cable. I always wanted to get one for my OFT. Should be here Friday.

I've had a Bluetooth obd2 port reader and torque for the past year. It's awesome. When I do mods, I run it to check things out, I scan codes and monitor everything. My last var was heavily modded and it was great to have. I had a dedicated wideband AFR gauge and boost gauge on that car but honestly Torque is good enough I didn't need them (that car had a wideband AFR sensor stock that reported to the canbus)

If I mod this FRS I won't bother with gauges and I'm selling my Autometer wideband gauge

I received my OBD2 reader and cannot get it to pair with my iPhone 6. I ended up getting ieGeek WiFi Wireless OBD-II Mini ELM327 OBD2 since it says it will work with iOS. The instructions were pretty much lacking any detail. All I get is a red light when I plug it in. Do I just plug it into my car, go to my iPhone and then look for the device in Bluetooth settings? I tried a free app BlueDriver and then purchased the recommended DashCommand without success.

KDad2 05-22-2016 08:36 PM

I was able to get a connection through WiFi but never bluetooth like the instructions say. Anyways, when I try and connect through DashCommmand, I get a bunch of flashing lights but then connection fails. I wonder if I have a bad device?

guybo 05-22-2016 10:06 PM

I have a cheap-o Android bluetooth OBD2 reader. It's an iAutomobil OBD2 Scanner and it connected with Torque easily. I don't know the first thing about Apple phones or Dashcommand

KDad2 05-23-2016 02:30 PM

I couldn't get it to work so I sent the damn thing back. I'll look for another device that works through WiFi for iPhone. So, all in all, I have no update on this issue yet.
